Disregarding quarrels and respect, he was worshiped and remembered by the gods with power and attendants, and became a place worthy of respect. Then, the monks reported to the Blessed One Buddha: "Venerable Blessed One, you have pacified the strife of many ordinary people, please look at how you have placed them in the attainment of ultimate enlightenment and the bliss of Nirvana." The Blessed One said: "Not only now, but also in the past, I have placed these many ordinary people in the four dhyanas and five superknowledges, listen to that. Monks, in the past, in a secluded village, a Brahmin performed a sacrifice. While performing the sacrifice, the Brahmins fought for cushions, and at that time, in a place of asceticism, lived a hermit with five hundred attendants. Then, at the place where the sacrifice was being performed, that hermit, in order to pacify the Brahmins' strife, taught the Dharma that was in accordance with it. Therefore, that strife was also pacified, and the Brahmins also developed renunciation, and renounced in front of that hermit. After they renounced there, they cultivated the four dhyanas and five superknowledges. Monks, what do you think? The hermit at that time, who was abiding in the conduct of a Bodhisattva, was myself. The Brahmins at that time were these many ordinary people. At that time, I also pacified the strife of many ordinary people and placed them in the four dhyanas and five superknowledges. Now I have also pacified the strife of many ordinary people and placed them in the attainment of ultimate enlightenment and the bliss of Nirvana. Furthermore, in the teachings of the perfectly enlightened Buddha of Light, all these people renounced, and there they practiced celibacy for one lifetime, perfected their faculties, and therefore, now they have attained complete liberation. The story of the Naga is that, while residing in Jeta Grove in Shravasti, at that time, a great minister of King Prasenajit was accused of a crime, all his possessions were taken away, and he was imprisoned in a dungeon, where he suffered from hunger and thirst.

Thus it was said. Then, having made a perverse aspiration, he died, and after his death, he was born as a fierce yaksha. He spread disease throughout the entire country of Kosala, and many people became speechless. The diviners said, 'That great minister made a perverse aspiration at the time of his death and was born as a fierce yaksha. He is the one who spread these diseases.' As soon as they heard this, many people became helpless. Then King Prasenajit thought, 'This cannot be subdued by anyone. Now, for this, I must pray to the Bhagavan.' Thinking this, he went to where the Bhagavan was, and having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Bhagavan and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, King Prasenajit said this to the Bhagavan: 'Venerable One, the Bhagavan has subdued fierce nagas such as Nanda and Upananda, and other nagas as well. He has also subdued fierce yakshas such as those who dwell in the wilderness. Venerable One, a certain great minister made a perverse aspiration and was born as a fierce yaksha, and he has spread disease in my country. For the sake of compassion, I beseech the Bhagavan to subdue that fierce yaksha.' Then the Bhagavan did not say anything to King Prasenajit, but gave his consent. Then King Prasenajit praised the Bhagavan's consent and rejoiced, bowed his head at the feet of the Bhagavan, and departed from the presence of the Bhagavan. Then, by the miraculous power of the Bhagavan, the yaksha was placed on the edge of Prince Jeta's garden, and in order to subdue him, the Bhagavan conjured a great fire. He saw himself surrounded by a great fire, and only saw peace at the feet of the Bhagavan. Then, terrified and frightened, he went to where the Bhagavan was, and having arrived, the Bhagavan spoke to that fierce yaksha: 'Good-faced one, because you previously committed unwholesome deeds, you were killed by King Prasenajit, and now you are here again.'

If, having been born, you cause many people to be attached, after dying from here, what is your destination? What is your place of birth? What is your place of going? The yaksha pleaded. What did the Blessed One say? The Blessed One said: Abandon this sinful deed! The yaksha pleaded: The Blessed One has taught me as such. Having pleaded thus, he took refuge and the precepts, and pleaded to the Blessed One: Venerable one, I have abandoned the sinful deed. Venerable one, from now on, for the many people dwelling in Manyan, I am their protector and refuge. Then, the monks pleaded to the Buddha, the Blessed One: Venerable one, the Blessed One has subdued that fierce yaksha, and look, you have placed those many people in a place of fearlessness. The Blessed One said: Not only now, but also in the past, I subdued this fierce yaksha, and listen to how I placed many people in a place of fearlessness. Monks, in the past, in the city of Varanasi, King Brahmadatta ruled. At that time, in the land of Kashmir, a fierce and terrible poisonous naga arose, destroying cities and villages. As it moved towards Varanasi, King Brahmadatta heard of it, and upon hearing it, he was greatly afraid. He ordered the four divisions of his army to be equipped and sent, saying: Today, kill that fierce naga! Then, they bowed at his feet and pleaded: O King, the army cannot kill it, but it can be killed by mantras or medicine. Or, it can be subdued by virtuous ascetics and Brahmins who are honored for their virtuous conduct. At that time, there, a Candala boy, of loving nature, greatly compassionate, loving towards sentient beings, seeing that many people were helpless, immediately felt compassion and said to the many people: You are helpless.
