Having summoned the monks, the Buddha declared, "Monks, I instruct you not to fight, not to expose each other's faults, argue, or quarrel, yet you fight, expose each other's faults, argue, and quarrel, and still perform the Uposatha. Is it true that such a Uposatha is not considered valid?" They replied, "Venerable One, it is indeed so." Like this, the Sangha should dwell together in accordance with the Dharma, and until they are expelled, they should be joined as before. Although the Blessed One instructed them thus, they still fought, exposed each other's faults, argued, and quarreled. Then, a householder invited the Sangha of monks, including the Buddha, to his home for a meal, and those monks went there. Afterward, the Blessed One, in order to manage the offerings, declared, "Bring the food here." The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, for five reasons, allow the acceptance of food in order to manage the offerings: in order to properly place the food inside, in order to teach the Dharma to the gods, in order to visit the sick, in order to inspect the bedding, and in order to establish the basis of training for the Shravakas. Here, the Blessed One intends to establish the basis of training in discipline. Therefore, he sent them to receive the food in order to manage the offerings. Afterward, many monks who went to that house sat on the seats and began to fight, exposing each other's faults, and arguing. They fought, exposed each other's faults, argued, and quarreled. They engaged in inappropriate bodily and verbal actions, and even struck each other. Then, those who had gone to receive the food took the food and went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, they bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One and sat to one side. Afterward, the Blessed One said to the monk who had taken the food, "Monk, is the Sangha of monks satisfied with the delicious food?" He replied, "Venerable One, it is indeed so. The Sangha of monks is indeed satisfied with the delicious food. Venerable One, however, many monks who are in that house are fighting, exposing each other's faults, and arguing."

The dispute arose. They fought, exposed each other's faults, argued and quarreled. They engaged in inappropriate physical actions and spoke inappropriate words, even to the point of striking each other, they reported. Then, the Blessed One, after taking his meal, washed his feet outside the monastery and entered the monastery to settle inside. Then, the Blessed One arose from placing the alms bowl and sat on the seat prepared in the midst of the Sangha of monks. Seated on the seat, the Blessed One addressed the monks: "Monks, is it true that those of you who went to that household fought, exposed each other's faults, and argued, and that you fought, exposed each other's faults, and argued, engaging in inappropriate physical actions and speaking inappropriate words, even to the point of striking each other?" "Venerable One, it is true." Then, the Blessed One addressed the monks: "For those monks who are divided into factions and go to that household, I shall establish the rules of discipline to be followed. Monks who are divided into factions should abandon all sources of contention. Those monks who remain in a normal state should not, with those monks who are divided into factions, whether day or night, morning or evening, dwell in the same monastery, temple, or near the same village. Do not dwell together, do not walk on the same path, do not travel together, do not exchange messages, do not exchange verbal messages. Those who remain in a normal state, if they can understand the root of the dispute and can pacify the dispute according to the Dharma and the Vinaya, and if they can be harmonious in order to protect the Teacher's teachings, then the method of pacifying the dispute is pure, and pacifying the dispute in a way that is in accordance with the Vinaya is called pacifying the dispute."
