And there was no more. Not clinging to desire and existence, others will not change. Because of seeing the state that others cannot take away, I no longer delight in the fire of sacrifice. I foolishly thought that liberation would come from sacrifices and the fires of asceticism. Because I have not seen the state of no death and the supreme place, I have become blind, following birth and death. The protector, the best of men, has spoken well of the unconditioned; now I have seen that state. Sage, leader of beings, power of truth, you have appeared for the sake of many beings. He said: "Whatever Dharma is thoroughly distinguished, whatever coming into being by means of abiding, that you have well contemplated. You have come well by determining it. Let Kasyapa and his retinue generate great weariness." Then the venerable Uruvilvā Kāśyapa, with his mind thus composed, entered into samādhi, and having risen manifestly into the sky above the east, he performed the four modes of conduct, namely, walking, standing, sitting, and lying down. He entered into the fire element samādhi, and from the body of the venerable Uruvilvā Kāśyapa, who had entered into the fire element samādhi, various kinds of rays of light arose, such as blue, yellow, red, white, madder, and crystal colors. He also performed the twin miracle. From the upper part of his body, fire blazed forth, and from the lower part of his body, a stream of cold water flowed. From the lower part of his body, fire blazed forth, and from the upper part of his body, a stream of cold water flowed. Just as in the east, so also in the south, west, and north, he did the same. Then the venerable Uruvilvā Kāśyapa, having shown four kinds of miracles in the four directions, gathered up the manifestation of miracles, draped his upper robe over one shoulder, placed his right knee on the ground, and, with his palms joined, bowed down to where the Blessed One was, and said to the Blessed One: "The Blessed One is my teacher, I am a disciple of the Blessed One, the Sugata is my teacher."

Napa (honorific)! I am a Shravaka of the Sugata. The Blessed One said: Light Protector is he. He is he, Light Protector, your teacher is me. You are my Shravaka. Light Protector, abide as your own seat is! Then, the venerable Naked Light Protector with matted hair abided as his own seat was. Then, the Brahmins and householders of the Magadha country thought thus: Naked Light Protector with matted hair practices pure conduct at that great Shramana's place, the great Shramana does not practice pure conduct at the Naked Light Protector's place. Then, the Blessed One said to King Bimbisara of Magadha, the skillful and artful Image Heart: Great King, form arises and arises, decays and decays, its arising also needs to be known, and its decaying also needs to be known. Great King, feeling and, perception and, formations and, consciousness also arises and arises, decays and decays, its arising also needs to be known, and its decaying also needs to be known. Great King, having known that form is of the nature of arising and decaying, then completely knows form. Great King, feeling and, perception and, formations and, consciousness also, having known that it is of the nature of arising and decaying, then completely knows consciousness. Great King, having completely known form, then does not think that form is my self, does not take, does not abide, does not cling. Great King, feeling and, perception and, formations and, having completely known consciousness, then does not think that consciousness is my self, does not take, does not abide, does not cling. Great King, not clinging to form, not taking, not abiding, not clinging, then I say this is immeasurable, countless, Nirvana.

Nowhere to go, countless, I call it nirvana. Then, the Brahmins and householders of Magadha thought thus: If form is not self, and feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are not self, then who would become self or sentient being? Who would become life, birth, nourishment, person, strength, powerful one, author, agent, speaker, feeler, producer, universal producer? Even if not born, not arisen, and will not arise, these aggregates will be abandoned, and other aggregates will not be taken up. Then, the Blessed One, knowing the minds of the Brahmins and householders of Magadha with his mind, spoke to the monks: Monks, the so-called "I, I" is merely the attachment of those ordinary people who are without learning. Here, there is neither self nor belonging to self. Monks, when there is birth, only suffering arises; when there is cessation, only suffering ceases. When there is birth, only formations arise; when there is cessation, only formations cease. Relying on those causes and conditions, the stream of formations of sentient beings will enter. Monks, the Thus-Gone One has fully understood the connection of the stream of formations of sentient beings, therefore he bestows death and birth. With the divine eye, which is pure and transcends human power, he truly knows how sentient beings die and exist, are born and exist, and the good and bad colors, those who go to good destinies and those who go to bad destinies, and sentient beings who go according to their actions. Alas, these sentient beings, because they engage in evil deeds with their body, evil deeds with their speech, evil deeds with their mind, slander the noble ones, hold wrong views, and the actions of wrong views, and because they have correctly taken up the Dharma, due to that cause and condition, when they are separated from the body, after death they will be born into the hells of evil destinies, evil paths, and fallen sentient beings. Alas, these sentient beings, because they engage in good deeds with their body
