May the Bhagavan be pleased, may he not be displeased. Some, having renounced, have abandoned all afflictions and have directly realized the state of Arhat. The Bhagavan declared: In the teachings of the perfectly complete Buddha Kashyapa, some of these became lay devotees. Some, having renounced, there, for the duration of their lives, took refuge, guarded the foundations of training, and having fully matured their faculties, have now become liberated. The Hundred Deeds, Volume Thirty-Six. The one called 'All-Pervading' is this: When the Bhagavan was traveling through the land of Magadha, there was a large community of monks, together with a thousand monks, all of whom were formerly ascetics with matted hair. All of them were Arhats, those with exhausted outflows, who had done what needed to be done, who had accomplished what needed to be accomplished, who had attained their own benefit, who had completely severed the connections to existence, who had utterly exhausted [afflictions], and whose minds were completely liberated through perfect knowledge. Together with them, the Bhagavan was traveling through the land of Magadha. When they arrived at the stupa called 'Very Firm' belonging to the people of Magadha, passing through the bamboo grove, at that time the Bhagavan went to Very Firm and stayed on that side of the Very Firm stupa belonging to the people of Magadha. Then, the king of the land of Magadha, the skillful and artful Image Heart, heard that the Bhagavan, together with a large community of monks, together with a thousand monks, was traveling through the land of Magadha and had arrived at the stupa called 'Very Firm' belonging to the people of Magadha, in the bamboo grove. Having heard this, he set out from the royal palace with great royal wealth, great royal power, two thousand chariots, eighteen hundred swift mares, and numerous Brahmins and householders residing in the land of Magadha, in order to see the Bhagavan and to pay homage to the Bhagavan, and went to the Bhagavan's presence. When he arrived at the city gate, the crown fell from his head. He thought to himself, 'Will my seeing the Bhagavan become inauspicious?' Then, the gods...

Venerable one, this is good. It is good that you behold the Blessed One and pay homage to the Blessed One. However, some of those with whom you have created roots of virtue are imprisoned in jails, and some are in various lands. King, you should release the prisoners. Also, proclaim in the lands that for the sake of beholding the Blessed One and paying homage to the Blessed One together with them, let it be today. Then, as soon as he heard this, King Rupakaya released the prisoners and gathered all the many people living in the lands. Together with those many people, he went to a stupa called Rabbrtan in the land of Magadha, to the end of the bamboo grove (Venuvana). He looked back at his army, and seeing the large army, he became arrogant, thinking, 'My appearance and power are unmatched.' Then, the Blessed One, knowing the mind of King Rupakaya, manifested five hundred kings who were even more beautiful and had even better appearances, and he was teaching them the Dharma. Then, the king of Magadha, Rupakaya, who was skilled in crafts, went to where the Blessed One was. He rode his mount as far as the mount could go, and then he left behind the five symbols of kingship: the crest jewel, the umbrella, the sword, the jewel, and the yak-tail fan, as well as the colorful shoes, and went to where the Blessed One was. King Rupakaya, in the presence of the Blessed One, saw five hundred kings who were extremely handsome and beautiful listening to the Dharma, and his arrogance due to his appearance vanished. Then he thought to himself, 'If I do not mention my name and lineage, the Blessed One may not notice me.' So he went to where the Blessed One was, and after going there, he draped his upper garment over one shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and bowed with his palms joined towards where the Blessed One was, and spoke his name and lineage three times: 'Venerable one, I am'

He was the ruler of Magadha, named Skillful in Craftsmanship, Essence of Form. Monk, I am the king of Magadha, named Skillful in Craftsmanship, Essence of Form. Then, the Blessed One said: Great King, that is indeed him, you are the king of Magadha, named Skillful in Craftsmanship, Essence of Form. Great King, please sit on your own seat. Then, the king of Magadha, named Skillful in Craftsmanship, Essence of Form, bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One, and sat to one side. The Brahmins and some householders of Magadha bowed their heads to the feet of the Blessed One, and sat to one side. Some engaged in various kinds of pleasant and satisfying conversations with the Blessed One, and sat to one side. Some saluted with folded hands in the direction of the Blessed One, and sat to one side. Some from afar saw the Blessed One and sat to one side. At that time, the venerable Uruvilvā Kāśyapa also gathered in that same assembly and sat down. Then, the Brahmins and householders of Magadha thought to themselves: Does this great ascetic practice the holy life under Kāśyapa, or does Uruvilvā Kāśyapa practice the holy life under the great ascetic? Then, the Blessed One, knowing the thoughts in the minds of the Brahmins and householders of Magadha, addressed the venerable Uruvilvā Kāśyapa in verse: Kāśyapa, what dwelling have you seen, that here you have abandoned fire, abandoned the ascetic's practices? Kāśyapa, why have you abandoned sacrifice? Please tell me the reason for all of that. Kāśyapa replied: Here, some praise foods and drinks, essences, retinues, and women. Seeing those as the defilements of the aggregates, I no longer delight in the sacrificial fire. The Blessed One said: If you do not delight in desires, nor in foods, drinks, and beds, then how in the world of gods and humans do you obtain joy? Kāśyapa, answer the question I have asked. Kāśyapa replied: How does one pacify the absence of aggregates?
