Those two, smeared with butter and perfume, filled the night with divine flowers such as udumbara, lotus, kumuda, white lotus, and mandārava, illuminating the entire garden of Prince Jeta with great light, scattering flowers to the Blessed One, bowing their heads at the feet of the Blessed One, and sat before the Blessed One to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Blessed One taught them the Dharma that was appropriate for them, and they, having heard the Dharma, realized the truth. Having realized the truth, they returned to their own abodes. Then, the monks, seeing that the entire garden of Prince Jeta was filled with great light, inquired of the Blessed One: "Blessed One, what is this? Is it Brahmā, the lord of the three thousand worlds, or Indra, the lord of the gods, or the Four Great Kings, or some other son of the gods with great magical powers and great strength, who has come to see the Blessed One?" The Blessed One replied: "Monks, it is not Brahmā, the lord of the three thousand worlds, or Indra, the lord of the gods, or the Four Great Kings, or some other son of the gods with great magical powers and great strength, who has come to see me. Monks, did you see two lions fighting each other in the forest clearing monastery?" They replied: "Venerable One, we saw them." He replied: "I taught the Dharma to those two, and they, having heard the Dharma from me, extinguished their hatred. Those two died and were reborn in the realm of the gods, becoming gods, and came to me. I taught the Dharma to those two, and they, having heard the Dharma from me, realized the truths. Having realized the truths, those two returned to their own abodes." Then, the monks said to the Buddha, the Blessed One: "Venerable One, the Blessed One has pacified the hatred of those two lions, enabling them to attain heaven and liberation, and has seen the removal of the fear of the two places." The Blessed One replied: "Not only now, but also in the past, I have pacified the hatred of these two, establishing them in the four dhyānas and the five superknowledges, and removing the fear of the two places.

请听我讲述如何消除恐惧。比丘们，过去世的时候，有尸毗国的国王名为梵授，以及毗提诃国的国王名为大军，他们两人之间互不和睦，因此他们两人时常互相残害许多百姓。后来，过了一些时候，他们两人整顿了军队的四种组成部分，为了交战，在边境驻扎。他们两人驻扎的地方附近的一个苦行之处，住着一位具有五种神通的仙人，他具有大神通和大威力，因为怜悯他们两人，便从上方的虚空中来到他们两人之间。然后，他们两人见到那位仙人，便消除了所有的愤怒，对那位仙人非常欢喜。他们两人欢喜之后，对那位仙人说：有何吩咐？那位仙人说：请消除仇恨。那两位国王说：我们将如仙人所说的那样去做。说完，他们便和解了，向仙人的脚下顶礼，为了听法，坐在仙人的面前。那位仙人也为他们两人宣说了与他们相应的佛法。之后，那两位国王各自将自己的儿子立为国王，然后在那位仙人的面前出家，修习了四禅和五神通。比丘们，你们怎么想？当时的仙人，安住于菩萨行的人，就是我本人。当时的尸毗国的国王梵授，以及毗提诃国的国王大军，就是这两只狮子。当时我也是消除了他们两人的仇恨之后，出家修习了四禅和五神通。现在我也是消除了他们两人的仇恨，使他们获得了天界和解脱。禀告道：尊者，这两位做了什么业，以那个业的果报而转生为狮子呢？做了什么业，从那里去世之后转生到天界，并且这两位令世尊欢喜，没有令世尊不欢喜呢？

Listen to how fear is dispelled. Monks, in the past, there were two kings, the king of the Shivi country named Brahma-datta, and the king of the Videha country named Mahasena, who were not on good terms with each other. Therefore, they often harmed many people. Later, after some time, they both prepared the four divisions of their armies and stationed themselves at the border, intending to fight. Near the place where they were stationed, in a hermitage, lived a hermit with five supernormal powers, who had great magical powers and great strength. Out of compassion for them, he came from the sky above and sat between them. Then, when they saw the hermit, they were completely free from anger and became very happy with him. After they were happy, they said to the hermit, "What are your commands?" The hermit said, "Please eliminate your hatred." The two kings said, "We will do as the hermit says." Having said this, they reconciled, prostrated at the hermit's feet, and sat before him to listen to the Dharma. The hermit also taught them the Dharma that was appropriate for them. Then, the two kings each installed their sons as kings, and then they renounced in the presence of that hermit, cultivating the four dhyanas and the five supernormal powers. Monks, what do you think? The hermit at that time, who was abiding in the conduct of a Bodhisattva, was myself. The king of the Shivi country, Brahma-datta, and the king of the Videha country, Mahasena, were these two lions. At that time, I also eliminated their hatred and then renounced, cultivating the four dhyanas and the five supernormal powers. Now, I have also eliminated their hatred and caused them to attain heaven and liberation. They asked, "Venerable, what deeds did these two do that they were born as lions as a result of that karma? What deeds did they do that they died from there and were born in the heavens, and that these two pleased the Blessed One and did not displease him?"

世尊开示说：过去的业也是有的，现在的业也是有的。什么是过去的业呢？在正等觉佛陀迦叶佛的教法中，这两个人成为居士，那个不善言辞的人，因为这两人恼怒，对很多人说了“畜生”这个词。之后这两人一生中皈依，守护学处，临终时发愿。正等觉佛陀迦叶佛所预言的婆罗门童子，我愿能令那位佛陀世尊欢喜，不要令其不欢喜。比丘们，你们怎么想？那时成为居士的那两个人，就是这两只狮子。他们因为在那里对很多人说了“畜生”这个词的业的异熟，所以转生为畜生。他们因为在那里一生中皈依，守护学处，临终时发愿，所以比丘们，我获得了与正等觉佛陀迦叶佛，极其相同、力量相同、事业相同、方便相同的果位。这两人令我欢喜，没有令我不欢喜，这是过去时的业。什么是现在发生的业呢？这两个变成狮子后，让我心中欢喜，因此转生到天界。这是现在发生的业。《网所捕获》的故事是这样的：本师住在舍卫城。当时在舍卫城的一个森林里，一些猎人为了捕猎鹿，设置了陷阱、网和许多捕兽器。在那里抓住了许多鹿。那些猎人第二天一大早就去了那个森林，用箭射杀了所有被抓住的鹿，只留下少数几只。当时，世尊也来到了那个地方。之后，那些鹿和猎人们从远处看到了世尊。看到后，他们对世尊非常欢喜。

The Blessed One said: 'There is also past karma, and there is also present karma. What is past karma? In the teachings of the Fully Enlightened Buddha Kashyapa, these two became lay practitioners. Because of the anger of these two, that unskilled speaker spoke the word "animal" to many people. Then these two took refuge for one lifetime and kept the precepts. At the time of death, they made a prayer: "May I please the Buddha, the Blessed One, who is the Brahmin boy prophesied by the Fully Enlightened Buddha Kashyapa, and may I not displease him." Monks, what do you think? Those two who became lay practitioners at that time were these two lions. Because of the ripening of the karma of speaking the word "animal" to many people there, they were born as animals. Because they took refuge there for one lifetime, kept the precepts, and made a prayer at the time of death, monks, I have attained the same level as the Fully Enlightened Buddha Kashyapa, the same power, the same deeds, and the same skillful means. These two pleased me and did not displease me. This is the karma of the past. What is the karma that is happening now? These two, having become lions, made my mind happy, and therefore they were born in the realm of the gods. This is the karma that is happening now.' The story of 'Caught in the Net' is as follows: The Teacher was staying in Shravasti. At that time, in a forest in Shravasti, some deer hunters set up traps, nets, and many snares to hunt deer. Many deer were caught there. Those hunters got up early the next morning and went to that forest. They shot and killed all the deer that were caught there, leaving only a few. At that time, the Blessed One also went to that place. Then those deer and those hunters saw the Blessed One from afar. Having seen him, they became very happy with the Blessed One.
