Having become so, those hunters went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, they bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One, and sat before him in order to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Blessed One understood their thoughts, habits, faculties, wisdom, and nature, and taught them the Dharma that suited them. Therefore, those hunters, while sitting on that very seat, realized the fruit of entering the stream. They saw the truth and requested: 'Venerable one, if we can be ordained in the well-spoken Dharma and discipline, and obtain the requisites of a monk, then we also wish to practice the pure conduct in the presence of the Blessed One.' Then, the Blessed One ordained them with the words 'Come, monks,' and bestowed upon them the full ordination, and also gave them predictions. They also, through diligence, practice, and effort, abandoned all defilements, and realized the state of Arhat. Those deer also, with joy in their hearts towards the Blessed One, died and were reborn in the heavens. As soon as a son or daughter of the gods is born, three thoughts naturally arise: 'From where did I die, where was I born, and by what karma was I born?' Then, they saw those beings who had died from the animal realm, were born in the heavens, and had joy in their hearts towards the Blessed One. Then, they thought: 'It is not our place to go to see the Blessed One only after a long time has passed. We should go to see the Blessed One before a long time has passed.' Then, those sons of the gods who were formerly deer, adorned with earrings and armlets, wearing necklaces, their bodies adorned with garlands and belts, wearing crowns adorned with various precious jewels, their bodies anointed with saffron, Tamala leaves, and cloud incense, etc., on that very night, filled containers with heavenly Utpala flowers, lotuses, water lilies, white lotuses, and Mandarava flowers, illuminated the entire Jeta Grove with great light, scattered flowers upon the Blessed One, and bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One.

Then they went and sat before the Blessed One in order to listen to the Dharma. Then the Blessed One taught them the Dharma that was in accordance with them. Having heard the Dharma, they realized the truth, and having realized the truth, they returned to their own abodes. Then the monks saw that all of King Jeta's Grove was pervaded by a great light, and they asked the Blessed One, "Blessed One, what is the reason? Yesterday, did Brahmā, the lord of the three thousand worlds, or Indra, the lord of the gods, or the four guardians of the world, or some other son of the gods with great magical powers and great strength, come to see the Blessed One?" The Blessed One replied, "Monks, yesterday Brahmā, the lord of the three thousand worlds, or Indra, the lord of the gods, or the four guardians of the world, or some other son of the gods with great magical powers and great strength, did not come to see me. Monks, did you see five hundred deer in the forest clearing monastery killed by hunters shooting arrows?" They replied, "Venerable One, we saw them." The Blessed One said, "Having died while their minds were pleased with me, they were born into the heavens from death and transcendence, and having become gods, they came to me. I taught them the Dharma, and because they heard the Dharma from me, they realized the truths, and having realized the truths, they returned to their own abodes." Then the monks asked the Blessed One, "Venerable One, what deeds did those hunters do, that the ripening of those deeds caused them to be born into the caste of outcasts? What deeds did those deer do, that the ripening of those deeds caused them to be born as deer? And these deer pleased the Blessed One, and did not displease the Blessed One." The Blessed One replied, "In the scriptures of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light-Protecting, all these went forth, and became quarrelsome and inarticulate monks. There, they spoke the word 'outcast' to the monks. Some spoke the word 'animal.' Those who spoke the word 'animal' were born as animals. Those who spoke the word 'outcast' were born as outcasts.

So! Having practiced celibacy there for one lifetime, and having fully matured their faculties, they are now liberated. The story called "Upper Garment Fold" is as follows: The Blessed One, together with a great Sangha of monks consisting of one thousand two hundred and fifty monks, five hundred merchants, and five hundred beggars, were traveling together through various regions. While passing through a forest, a great fire blazed up in a place within that forest as the Blessed One was proceeding. Many people became frightened and terrified, thinking, "We are finished! We have no chance of surviving!" Then, the Blessed One saw those people who were frightened and terrified. Having seen them, he went to the front of those travelers and spoke in verses: Whatever power all the Buddhas have, Whatever power all the Arhats have, By the glory of the Buddha Jewel, O fire, open the path for me! Whatever power all the Buddhas have, Whatever power all the Arhats have, By the glory of the Dharma Jewel, O fire, open the path for me! Whatever power all the Buddhas have, Whatever power all the Arhats have, By the glory of the Sangha Jewel, O fire, open the path for me! As soon as the Blessed One spoke these words, the fire subsided. Those merchants became very delighted with the Blessed One. Having become delighted, they sat before the Blessed One in order to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Blessed One taught them the Dharma that was appropriate for them. Then, some of them generated warmth, some generated the peak, the patience that accords with truth, the supreme mundane dharma, and the meditative absorption of seeing. Some realized the fruit of stream-entry, some realized the fruit of once-returning, some realized the fruit of non-returning, some, having ordained, realized the state of Arhatship, and some obtained the position of a universal monarch.
