Then they prayed to the gods. Then the captain said: Why should we pray to other gods? We should take refuge in that very hermit. For he will protect us from poverty and destitution, and from encountering harm, and will grant the gift of life. Then, as soon as they heard this, those five hundred merchants all took refuge in that very hermit. Then, a deity who delighted in the hermit inspired that hermit, and that hermit, by means of his miraculous powers, rescued those five hundred merchants from the great ocean and placed them in his own hermitage. Then the merchants thought: That we have survived, whatever the case, is all due to the power of this hermit. So they gave alms and accumulated merit, and all went forth to the hermit. Having gone forth there, they developed the four concentrations and the five superknowledges. Monks, what do you think? The one who was the hermit at that time, abiding in the conduct of a Bodhisattva, was myself. The one who was the captain at that time, and those who were the merchants, were these very merchants. At that time, too, relying on this very captain, I rescued them from great fear and established them in the four concentrations and the five superknowledges. Now, too, relying on this very captain, I have rescued them from great fear and established them in the ultimate, eternal accomplishment and the peaceful Nirvana. Furthermore, in the teachings of the perfectly complete Buddha Kashyapa, all these went forth, and there they practiced celibacy for one lifetime, and by perfecting their faculties, they have now become completely liberated. The story called "Redemption" begins as follows: The Buddha was dwelling in Shravasti, and at that time in Shravasti there lived a householder who was rich, had many possessions, enjoyed great wealth, was vast and extensive, equal to the wealth of Vaishravana (梵文:Vaiśravaṇa,梵文罗马拟音:vaiśravaṇa,汉语字面意思:多闻), and could rival the wealth of Vaishravana. He took a wife because of circumstances, and played together with her.

And enjoy in the Gladden Grove. That householder was also one who did not beget sons; both sons and daughters born would die. That householder's attendant was the long-lived 'Non-ceasing'. He made that householder go for refuge and abide in the grounds of training, and had him make distributions of alms. Then, later, that householder's wife conceived a son, and when nine or ten months had passed, she gave birth to a boy who was handsome, pleasing to behold, and beautiful. That householder thought, 'By what means could I make this boy live long?' Then this idea occurred to him: 'This noble Non-ceasing is great in magical power, endowed with merit, and renowned. If I were to offer this son of mine to him as a servant, it might be that he would live long through his power.' So the two parents offered that boy to the long-lived Non-ceasing. He would take him to the garden of Prince Jeta every day and raise him, put him in the guise of a monk, and have him go for alms with the monks. Then, when he had grown up, that householder invited the Buddha and the Sangha of monks to his house, and satisfied them with many pure and excellent foods prepared with his own hands, and offered them whatever they desired. He also offered much gold and silver as a ransom for that boy. The Blessed One also taught that householder with a Dharma talk, caused him to understand correctly, caused him to rejoice, and then rose from his seat and departed. After the Blessed One had departed, that householder took off the boy's colored monastic robes and put on him the clothes and ornaments of a householder. Then, all the householder's clothes and ornaments that he put on disappeared, and only those colored monastic robes appeared. Then, when he was unable to change that attire, he continued to raise him while he remained in the guise of a monk. In that very house, he had him study letters together with five hundred friends of Ne'u-ldang. Then, since he had no joy even in his own house, what need to mention elsewhere? He only wanted to go to the monastery.
