I thought, 'I must make these sons serve and honor him,' and so I said. That hermit persuaded the householder to return and took him to his own dwelling. The hermit taught his sons the Dharma that was in accordance with this. Therefore, those sons invited their father back into the house and placed him as before. Then, in order to repay the previous kindness, the householder gave food to the hermit in his house and went forth in his presence. Having gone forth, he developed the four meditations and the five superknowledges. Monks, what do you think? The one who was the hermit at that time, who dwelt in the conduct of a Bodhisattva, was myself. The one who was the householder at that time was this Brahmin alone. The ones who were his sons were these sons alone. At that time also, this one had become old and infirm, and having been driven out of the house, I, with skillful means, placed him in his former position, and caused him to abide in the four meditations and the five superknowledges. Now also, this one has become old and infirm, and having been driven out of the house, I, with skillful means, placed him in his former position, and placed him in the attainment of the ultimate of eternity and the bliss of Nirvana. When he grew up, he learned writing, arithmetic, telling jokes, manual calculation, subtraction, hiding, spreading, examining clothes, examining jewels, and examining precious stones.

He was trained in the examination of incense, the examination of medicine, the examination of elephants, the examination of horses, and the examination of weapons. He became skilled in writing, skilled in reading, intelligent, clear in his actions, even-tempered, and proficient in eight types of examination. Then one day, his father sent him among his friends. Those friends all held different views and desires, speaking in ways that were mutually incompatible. They only praised what they liked. That householder's son was naturally intelligent, and he inquired about the principles of everyone, asking what this one said and what that one said. But he did not like those forms of views, he did not tolerate them, and he did not consider them to be suitable. Then one day, a lay practitioner praised the Buddha correctly as he knew how. As soon as he heard this, the householder's son asked, 'These sounds of "Buddha" have never occurred before, so who is this Buddha?' Then that lay practitioner spoke praises of the Buddha that were in accordance with this. Then the householder's son desired to see the Blessed One. Then he abandoned everything and went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and sat before him in order to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Blessed One to him taught the Dharma that was in accordance with him. Having heard this, the householder's son became delighted in his heart towards the Blessed One. Then, the householder's son, realizing that the Blessed One's speech was finished, praised and rejoiced in what the Blessed One had said, bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, and then departed from the presence of the Blessed One. Then one day, he developed the mind of giving, but seeing that there was nothing in his house, he thought, 'I should go into the great ocean, and if I could manage to go to the Isle of Jewels even just once, then I could easily give alms and also do meritorious deeds.' So, together with about five hundred merchants, he took goods and went into the great ocean, and he went to the Isle of Jewels...
