May it cause him to rejoice, may it not cause him to not rejoice. Therefore, monks, I have attained being extremely equal to the Fully Enlightened Buddha Od-srung, equal in strength, equal in deeds, and equal in methods. Therefore, he has caused me to rejoice, and has not caused me to not rejoice. The Hundred Deeds, the Twenty-eighth Chapter, named "Od-srung the Chief." The basis of the story is that he was residing in Nyen-du (Shravasti). At that time, in a certain mountain valley, there lived a hermit with a retinue of twenty thousand. That hermit was one who had reached the end of all treatises, and was great in magical powers and great in strength. He established those twenty thousand Brahmins in the four concentrations and the five superknowledges. Then, when the Bhagavan prophesied the ripening of karma in the great Lake Ma-dros-pa (Anavatapta), he arose from within that lake with a retinue of five hundred, and from the sky he went to the grove of King Gyal-bu Gyal-je (King Jetavana). That hermit, together with his retinue, also saw the Bhagavan arise into the sky from within that lake. As soon as they saw him, they rejoiced in the Bhagavan, abandoned everything, and followed after the Bhagavan. They entered the grove of King Gyal-bu Gyal-je, and having arrived at the place where the Bhagavan was residing, they bowed their heads at the feet of the Bhagavan, and sat before him in order to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Bhagavan, having understood the thoughts, predispositions, faculties, wisdom, and nature of those twenty thousand hermits, taught them the Dharma that was in accordance with them. Therefore, those twenty thousand hermits, while seated on those very seats, realized the truth and directly attained the fruit of non-return in an instant. However, that chief hermit, being full of hearing and arrogant, did not attain anything. Then, those twenty thousand hermits arose from their seats, arranged their upper robes on one shoulder, and, turning their joined palms towards the Bhagavan, said this to the Bhagavan: "Venerable one, if it is permissible for us to go forth, take full ordination, and obtain the state of a monk in the Dharma and Discipline well-spoken by you, then we also [wish to do so] in the Bhagavan."

He practiced celibacy in that regard. Then, the Blessed One ordained those twenty thousand hermits with the words, "Come, monks," and conferred full ordination upon them. He also gave them predictions. They, too, abandoned all afflictions through diligence, practice, and effort, and directly realized the state of an Arhat. That chief hermit, although he had renounced, had not attained anything. Then, having heard that, he engaged in effort. Before long, he mastered the three baskets and became a preacher of the Dharma, endowed with wisdom and confidence in liberation. Then, one day, the thought arose in him: "I teach the Dharma to many thousands of beings, but I myself do not wish to be a teacher of the Dharma. All of these friends of mine have attained the state of an Arhat, but I, having heard that, have become helpless, without having attained any special qualities. I think I should abandon listening and meditation and strive for a while." Then, by contemplating, measuring, and closely examining what he had heard, he abandoned all afflictions and directly realized the state of an Arhat. He became an Arhat, free from desire for the three realms, possessing a mind that regarded gold and wood as equal, a mind like the sky and the palm of the hand, cooled like sandalwood soaked in water, having shattered the shell of ignorance with wisdom, having attained wisdom, supernormal powers, and individual perfect knowledge, not looking to the gains, attachments, and honors of existence, and becoming an object of worship, remembrance, and reverence by the gods, including those with power and attendants. Then, the monks beseeched the Buddha.

There was someone named "Guardian Chief" who lived. Later, he went to a mountain valley in search of roots and fruits. There, he saw twenty thousand ascetics. As soon as he saw them, he became very happy. He thought, "I live in the household life, but these people have certainly come forth from the household life. These people must surely be liberated from samsara. I too should definitely renounce in their presence." So, he abandoned everything and renounced in the presence of those ascetics. He went there and became proficient in all the scriptures. Then, later, that chief ascetic died. Those twenty thousand Brahmin youths were very sad because of the death of that ascetic, and they wailed and lamented in suffering. Then, the chief of Light Protection said to them, "Brahmin youths, do not grieve so much! Do not suffer! Do not wail and lament! I will provide all your needs." Having said that, he gathered all those twenty thousand Brahmin youths, and he also gave them the teaching of mindfulness. All of them also generated the four dhyanas and the five superknowledges. Then, later, the chief of Light Protection thought, "These disciples of mine have realized such a Dharma through my mindfulness. But I, being arrogant with the burden of learning, have not attained anything. What need do I have for this learning?" So, he also, through thinking, measuring, and closely examining, generated the four dhyanas and the five superknowledges. Monks, what do you think? The one who became the chief of Light Protection at that time was none other than this ascetic. At that time, he also did not attain anything because he was arrogant with the burden of learning. Later, by thinking about and measuring what he had heard, and by closely examining it, he generated the four dhyanas and the five superknowledges. Even now, he had not attained anything before because he was arrogant with the burden of learning. Later, by thinking about, measuring, and closely examining what he had heard, he abandoned all defilements and directly realized the state of an Arhat. Then, the monks inquired of the Buddha, the Bhagavan.
