Chapter Seven of the Vinaya (Part Two) Chapter Seven of the Vinaya (Part Two) The Complete Hundred Deeds, Volume Twenty-Seven, called "Trungtoe": The origin is that while residing in Nyen Du Yopa (Shravasti), at that time, in a certain forest, there lived about five hundred hermits. They were seated there, performing fire sacrifices. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, is the teacher of the single path, possessing mastery over the two kinds of knowledge and wisdom, skilled in the three unmixed close placements of mindfulness, fearless with the four fearlessnesses, liberated from the five realms of existence, skilled in the six sense bases, with the seven branches of enlightenment as the field of activity, meditating on the eight liberations, entering into the nine successive abidings of meditative absorption, possessing the power of the ten strengths, proclaiming the great, true lion's roar, by nature, three times during the day and three times during the night, that is, six times day and night, With the Buddha's eye, he gazes upon the world: Who is flourishing? Who is declining? Who is impoverished? Who is pitiable? Who is afflicted with harm? Who is impoverished, pitiable, and afflicted with harm? Who is inclined towards the lower realms? Who is falling into the lower realms? Who has fallen into the lower realms? Who shall I rescue from the lower realms and place in the heavenly realms, liberation, and fruition? Who shall I pull out by the hand from sinking in the mud of misconduct? Who, lacking the seven noble riches, shall I empower to wield the power of the seven noble riches? Who, from not having generated roots of virtue, shall I cause to generate? Who, having already generated roots of virtue, shall I cause to fully mature? Who, having fully matured roots of virtue, shall I pierce with the sword of wisdom? Who shall I make to have fruit, the world adorned by the appearance of the Buddha? Thus, the wisdom gaze engages. The ocean is the abode of aquatic creatures, the tides may recede in time, but for the sons to be tamed, the Buddha does not miss the opportunity. Then, the Bhagavan thought: The five hundred hermits have reached the time for taming. The Bhagavan thought: In whatever way, to make all the fire sacrifice hearths of those five hundred hermits...

Inside, they saw the footprints of the Buddha, and thereafter it was blessed in such a way that they could no longer light a fire. Then they thought to themselves: 'Because of the power of these footprints, we are unable to light a fire in our hearths, so it seems that these footprints are auspicious. Could these footprints be the footprints of a great god?' Then those five hundred hermits offered burnt offerings to those footprints of the Buddha, and through the power of the Buddha, those burnt offerings ignited themselves, and the flames reached the world of Brahma. Then the hermits saw this and were amazed, thinking, 'The great god is watching over us!' Then, in order to guide them, the Bhagavan blessed footprints one after another until they reached the grove of Prince Jeta. Then those hermits saw footprints appearing one after another from the place of the fire sacrifice, and they thought to themselves: 'The great god has gone this way,' and they made offerings to those footprints one after another, and eventually they entered the grove of Prince Jeta. At that time, the Bhagavan was sitting in the midst of hundreds of thousands of attendants, teaching the Dharma. Then those five hundred hermits saw the Buddha, the Bhagavan, whose body was well adorned and decorated with the thirty-two marks of a great being, like a body of fire, like flames fueled by ghee, like a lamp placed in a golden vessel, like a stupa adorned with various precious jewels, they saw the Buddha, the Bhagavan, who was intelligent, clear, immaculate, and possessed of perfect purity. Having seen him, they were filled with great joy. Just as a sentient being who has accumulated the cause of virtue experiences joy when they first see the Buddha, even one who has cultivated the mind of tranquility for twelve years would not experience such joy. Having seen him in that way, they went to where the Bhagavan was, bowed their heads at the feet of the Bhagavan, and sat before him in order to listen to the Dharma. Then the Bhagavan
