Then, the Buddha observed the world with the eye of a Buddha, who declines? Who prospers? Who is poor? Who is fearful? Who is afflicted with harm? Who is poor, fearful, and afflicted with harm? Who inclines towards evil destinies? Who falls into evil destinies? Who has fallen into evil destinies? Who can I rescue from evil destinies and place in heavens, liberation, and fruition? Who is sinking in the mire of misconduct, whom shall I pull out by the hand? Who lacks the seven noble riches, whom shall I empower to wield the dominion of the seven noble riches? Who has not generated roots of virtue, whom shall I cause to generate? Who has already generated roots of virtue, whom shall I cause to fully ripen? Whose roots of virtue have fully ripened, whom shall I pierce with the weapon of wisdom? Whom shall I make possess the world adorned by the appearance of the Buddha, together with its fruits? Thus, the vision of wisdom arises. The ocean is the abode of aquatic creatures, the waves of time may recede, but for the sons to be tamed, the Buddha's time never passes. Then, the Bhagavan thought: The time has come to tame the naked ascetic Kashyapa. Then, having arisen from the grove of light, he went to the place where the naked ascetic Kashyapa was. The naked ascetic Kashyapa saw the Buddha Bhagavan from afar. Having seen him, he went to where the Bhagavan was, and having arrived, together with the Bhagavan, he engaged in various conversations that were truly pleasing and joyful, and then sat to one side. Then, the naked ascetic Kashyapa said to the Bhagavan: O Gautama, if it is permitted to ask, having opened the occasion for predicting the question, may I ask you a few questions here and now? The Bhagavan replied: Kashyapa, for now I must go to Rajagriha for alms, so it is not the time for you to ask. Come outside the Kalandaka Vihara, and there the time for you to ask will have arrived. He replied: O Gautama, what if I also change?

Then, perhaps Gautama will become someone else. Similarly, two or three times, the naked ascetic who shared the same lineage as Light Protector pleaded: If you allow me to ask questions, and open the door for predicting questions, then Gautama, I will ask you some questions here. Then, between two and three times, the Blessed One said to the naked ascetic who shared the same lineage as Light Protector: Light Protector, for now I must go to Rajagriha for alms, so the time for you to ask questions and predict questions has not yet come, please go outside the monastery, there the time for you to ask questions and predict questions will come. He pleaded: O Gautama, if you allow me to ask questions, and open the door for predicting questions, then Gautama, I will ask you some questions here. The Blessed One said: Light Protector, if you must talk about this matter two or three times, then, Light Protector, ask whatever you want. He pleaded: Gautama, what is it? Is suffering self-made? The Blessed One said: Light Protector, I have not said that suffering is self-made. O Gautama, what is it? Is suffering made by others? Light Protector, I have not predicted that suffering is made by others. O Gautama, what is it? Is suffering made by both oneself and others? Light Protector, I have not predicted that suffering is made by both oneself and others. O Gautama, what is it? Is suffering not made by oneself, nor by others, nor does it arise from causes? Light Protector, I have not predicted this either. Gautama, what is it? Is suffering not made by oneself, nor by others, nor does it arise from causes? When asked like this, do you also say that you have not predicted it? Light Protector, if asked whether suffering is made by oneself, or by others, or whether it does not arise from causes? I will say that I have not predicted it. O Gautama, what is it? Is there no suffering at all? Light Protector, suffering is not completely non-existent, but it certainly exists. O Gautama, if suffering is self-made, then how can I understand and see suffering?

May the Blessed One reveal to me such a Dharma. Venerable, when feeling and experience are the same, then suffering becomes self-made. Venerable, I do not say that. Venerable, when feeling is different and experience is also different, then suffering becomes made by others. Venerable, I do not say that. Venerable, when feeling and experience are the same, and when feeling is different and experience is also different, then suffering becomes both self-made and made by others. Venerable, I do not say that. Venerable, when all the causes of suffering disappear, then suffering becomes neither self-made, nor made by others, nor arising from causes. Venerable, I do not say that. The Thus-gone One does not rely on these two extremes, but teaches the Dharma of the Middle Way, which is: when this exists, this arises; with the arising of this, this arises. For example, with ignorance as the condition, actions arise; with actions as the condition, consciousness arises; with consciousness as the condition, name and form arise; with name and form as the condition, the six sense sources arise; with the six sense sources as the condition, contact arises; with contact as the condition, feeling arises; with feeling as the condition, craving arises; with craving as the condition, grasping arises; with grasping as the condition, becoming arises; with becoming as the condition, birth arises; with birth as the condition, old age and death, and sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and disturbance arise. Thus, this great mass of suffering arises. For example, when this does not exist, this does not arise; with the cessation of this, this ceases. For example, with the cessation of ignorance, actions cease; with the cessation of actions, consciousness ceases; with the cessation of consciousness, name and form cease; with the cessation of name and form, the six sense sources cease; with the cessation of the six sense sources, contact ceases; with the cessation of contact, feeling ceases.
