The ocean is the abode of aquatic creatures, and even the tides may ebb. But for the sons to be tamed, the Buddhas' time never passes. Then the Blessed One thought: Now is the time to prophesy this boy, and many beings to be tamed must be led through this boy. Thinking thus, the Blessed One blessed the boy so that he would not be eaten by dogs. Then the Blessed One arose early in the morning, put on his lower garment and Dharma robes, took his alms bowl, and accompanied by the assembly of monks, with the monastic community of monks leading the way, went to the country of Mithila, and the Blessed One sat down not far from the boy. Then many people living in the country of Mithila saw the Buddha, the Blessed One. Having seen him, they were amazed, and urged by their former roots of virtue, they went to where the Blessed One was. Then the Blessed One thought: How can I make this boy remember his former lives, speak, and converse with me? I should enter into such a samadhi. Thinking thus, the Blessed One blessed him in that way, and the boy remembered his former lives, spoke, and conversed with the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One said to the boy: Boy, are you unhappy? Blessed One, I am unhappy. Boy, are you unhappy? Sugata, I am unhappy. He said: Do you experience the unhappiness of the ripening fruit of the misdeeds of body, speech, and mind? He replied: Blessed One, I do experience the unhappiness of the ripening fruit of the misdeeds of body, speech, and mind. He said: Who is your unwholesome friend? He replied: It is my own mind. Then, as soon as they heard this, many people were amazed, thinking: How wonderful that such a being can remember his former lives, speak, and converse with the Blessed One! Having arrived before the assembly of devotees, those women, seeing his beautiful form and beautiful mind, became joyful. Having become joyful, they also unveiled their faces, Bowing and prostrating. Then the king also heard of this, and as soon as he heard, a great anger arose from the root of jealousy. He, being angry, commanded the king's attendants, saying: "You, today, gouge out the eyes of that renunciate!" Thus he commanded. Then, as soon as they heard this, the king's attendants seized that Pratyekabuddha and gouged out his eyes. That Pratyekabuddha, because the karma he was to experience from the past was about to manifest, did not even remember his miraculous powers, let alone illusions. Then that Pratyekabuddha thought: "These afflictions have been completely condemned and destroyed. If I continue to wander in samsara, enduring great suffering for a long time will not be good. I must put an end to this." Thinking thus, he rose into the sky and displayed various miracles such as burning, remaining still, raining, and flashing lightning. Ordinary people are quickly made to believe by miracles, and that king, like a tree being cut by a saw, bowed at his feet and said: "O possessor of great fortune, please descend. Please deliver me from the hand that is sinking into the mire of wrongdoing." That great being also completely passed into nirvana because of that event, and then that king made offerings to his relics and prayed: "May I not experience the result of this action of causing harm to such a pure being. Like this, by this root of virtue from having shown respect again, may I be born in whatever place I am born, may I be born into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family. May I please the teacher even more excellently than this, and may I not displease the teacher. May I renounce in that very teaching, abandon all afflictions, and realize the state of an Arhat."
