May it be made the lord of freedom. May those who have not generated roots of virtue be made to generate them. May those who have already generated roots of virtue be made to fully mature. May those roots of virtue that have already fully matured be pierced by the sword of wisdom. May the world adorned by the appearance of the Buddha, with its fruits, be such that wisdom contemplates, thinking. The ocean is the abode of aquatic creatures. The waves of time may recede, but for the sons to be tamed, the time of the Buddha will not pass. Then, the Blessed One thought: The time has come to tame the five hundred ascetics of the Deer Park. The Blessed One thought, in any case, to make those ascetics of the Deer Park see those deer, and enter Rajgir. Having seen them, he also blessed them to go to Rajgir together with those deer. Then, they went there, and the Blessed One made those deer that had been emanated disappear. Then, many ordinary people saw them and began to revile them in various ways. Having reviled them in this way, they came out of Rajgir and went to the side of the Bright Garden. Then, the Blessed One, out of compassion for them, appeared before them. Then, those five hundred ascetics of the Deer Park saw the Blessed One from afar. Having seen him, they became joyful towards the Blessed One. Having become joyful, they went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, they bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One, and sat down before him to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Blessed One understood their thoughts, habits, faculties, knowledge, and nature, and taught the Dharma that suited them. Therefore, those five hundred ascetics of the Deer Park, while sitting on the same seat, in the moment of realizing the truth, directly realized the fruit of non-return. Having seen the truth, they said to the Blessed One: Venerable, we wish to go forth in the well-spoken Dharma and discipline, receive full ordination, and become monks.

If such a thing can be obtained, we shall also practice brahmacharya in the presence of the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One ordained them with the words, "Come, monks," and conferred full ordination upon them, and also prophesied their future attainment. They also abandoned all defilements through diligence, practice, and effort, and directly realized the state of an Arhat. Then, the monks asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: Venerable Blessed One, what deeds did these monks commit that, as a result of the maturation of that karma, they have the form of deer, and together with the deer, they eat grass and drink water? However, they pleased the Blessed One, did not displease the Blessed One, and having renounced the world in the teachings of the Blessed One, abandoned all defilements, and directly realized the state of an Arhat. The Blessed One said: Monks, these are the deeds that they themselves have done and accumulated. Monks, in the past, in a bygone era, in this very fortunate eon, when the lifespan of beings was twenty thousand years, there appeared in the world a fully enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, a Sugata, a knower of the world, a tamer of beings, a charioteer, unsurpassed, a teacher of gods and humans, a Buddha, the Blessed One, named Light Protector. He traveled with a large community of monks and arrived in Rajagriha (present-day Rajgir, Bihar, India). At that time, in a place of ascetic practice in Rajagriha, there lived a Brahmin with five hundred followers. He saw the Blessed One Light Protector and his retinue. Having seen them, he said to the Brahmin boys: Boys, look at these monks of Light Protector, wandering like deer. They have no fixed abode, and they wander as they please. Then, one day, that Brahmin developed faith in the teachings of the Blessed One, and together with those Brahmin boys, he renounced the world in the presence of the fully enlightened Buddha Light Protector. Having renounced the world there, even though they practiced brahmacharya for a lifetime, they did not attain any accumulation of merit, so they...
