The Blessed One himself manifested it. Then, King Tumporab Nang heard that "the one who whipped the monk is the son of King Charkai." Then, he went to his place, prostrated at his feet, and asked for forgiveness. Relying on him, the son of the Venerable Katyayana was invited to a meal for seven days. Then, one day, the Venerable Katyayana thought, "I must cut off (myself) with gain and respect." Then, he went to the royal palace together with the Venerable Sarana. Then, the monks heard about how the Venerable Sarana had become. After hearing this, they reported to the Blessed One, "Venerable Sarana, what deeds did he do that, as a result of those deeds, he was born into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family? What deeds did he do that, as a result of those deeds, he was whipped by King Tumporab Nang? And he also pleased the Blessed One, did not displease (the Blessed One), became a monk in the Blessed One's teachings, abandoned all defilements, and manifested the state of an Arhat." The Blessed One said, "Monks, this is the karma that he himself has done and accumulated. Monks, in the past, in the city of Varanasi, King Tsangpa bestowed kingship. Then one day, his consorts and entourage served him and went to the pleasure garden, and the king fell asleep. The women were busy picking flowers and fruits, and his consorts were playing with each other in that pleasure garden. At that time when the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, do not appear in the world, the solitary Buddhas appear in the world. A solitary Buddha rested in that pleasure garden at night, and those women saw the one with a beautiful body and a beautiful mind, and as soon as they saw him, they felt joy for him. After joy arose, they prostrated at his feet and sat before him to listen to the Dharma. Then, the king woke up, and when he did not see the consorts and entourage, he became angry and took a sharp sword and went all the way along the path he had come. The king saw that solitary Buddha was teaching the Dharma to the consorts and entourage.

He saw him staying there. Having seen him, the monk thought, "He has seen my wife." Therefore, he became even more consumed with anger. He ordered his attendants to whip the solitary buddha severely and drive him away. Then, that solitary buddha thought, "This affliction has been rebuked and weakened. It is not right for me to wander aimlessly; I must take action." So, he rose into the sky and displayed miracles such as burning, walking, raining, and flashing lightning. The ordinary people were quickly drawn to faith by the miracles. As soon as they saw him, they became very happy. Being happy, they prostrated at his feet as if cutting down a tree with a saw, and said, "O fortunate one, please descend! Please rescue me from this mire of evil deeds!" Then, that solitary buddha, out of compassion for them, descended to the ground, and they prostrated at his feet, asking for forgiveness. He promised to provide him with all necessities for as long as he lived, and he built a shelter of branches and leaves in that very garden, and served him with all necessities. Later, one day, that solitary buddha thought, "What need do I have for this body-bound life? I should go to the realm of peaceful nirvana." So, he displayed miracles of burning, walking, raining, and flashing lightning, and completely passed into nirvana. Then, the king made offerings to his relics, built a stupa for the relics, and made great offerings to that stupa, making the aspiration: "Alas! May I not experience the consequences of this action, having harmed such a pure being in this way! May I, through the root of virtue from having honored him again, be born wherever I may be born, in a wealthy family with much wealth and great enjoyment! May I please a teacher who is even more excellent than this, and may I not displease him! May I ordain in his teachings alone, abandon all afflictions, and realize the state of an arhat!"

So it was said. Monks, what do you think? The king who was then called Brahma-given was none other than this Sarana. Because he had harmed a Pratyekabuddha there, the ripening of that karma caused him to be whipped to death wherever he was born. And now, he has pleased me, who am far more excellent than a hundred thousand kotis of Pratyekabuddhas, and has not displeased me, and has gone forth in my own doctrine, and has abandoned all defilements, and has realized Arhatship. Moreover, he went forth in the doctrine of the perfectly complete Buddha Light-protector, and there he practiced celibacy for one lifetime, and he brought his faculties to full maturity, and therefore, he has now become completely liberated. The so-called "deer-vow holder" refers to the time when he was dwelling in Rajagriha, when there were about five hundred deer-vow holders from the region of Videha, wearing deer skins and horns, eating grass and drinking water together with the deer. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, is the guide of the one and only path, possessing the two kinds of knowledge and wisdom, skilled in the three unmixed mindfulnesses, liberated from the five fearsome destinies by the four fearlessnesses, skilled in the six sense bases, with the seven limbs of enlightenment as his field of activity, meditating on the eight liberations, entering into the nine successive states of meditative absorption, possessing the ten powers, and roaring the great roar of the true lion. According to the Dharma, three times during the day and three times during the night, that is, six times day and night, the Buddha looks at the world with the eye of a Buddha: Who is declining? Who is prospering? Who is poor and destitute? Who is in distress? Who is associated with harm? Who is associated with poverty, distress, and harm? Who is inclined to the lower realms? Who is falling into the lower realms? Who has fallen into the lower realms? Who is it that I can rescue from the lower realms and place in the heavens, liberation, and fruition? Who is sinking in the mud of misconduct, whom I will pull out by the hand? Who is without the seven noble riches, from whom I will give the seven noble
