He saw him coming with four divisions of troops. Having seen him, he thought to himself: 'With what kind of intention has he come here?' When he looked at him, he realized that he wanted to kill him. In order to make him generate faith, he manifested himself in the sky above and stood high. Then, King Brahma-given saw the ascetic Fire-garland manifested in the sky above and standing high. As soon as he saw him, his anger and agitation disappeared, and he became doubtful. 'Is this as I have heard, or is it not?' Then he spoke in verse: 'Brahmin Fire-garland, I have heard that you indulge in desires. Is that true, or do you not indulge?' 'Great king, it is true, as you have heard from others. I have entered a wrong path and am intoxicated by attachment.' Then King Brahma-given became doubtful and went to the son of the ascetic Fire, and he asked the ascetic: 'Ascetic, is it as I have heard?' The ascetic said: 'Great king, it is true as you have heard, but the afflictions are so powerful.' The king said: 'Then, like this, he both enjoys desires and possesses such magical powers?' The ascetic said: 'Great king, when this ascetic indulged in desires, he lost his magical powers. I took him away from that place and gave him a prophecy, and I also taught him the method of attention, and so he generated magical powers again.' Then, as soon as he heard that, the king was delighted with him, and he bowed at the feet of the ascetic, asked for forgiveness, and left. Monks, what do you think? At that time, the one who became the son of the ascetic Fire, who was abiding in the conduct of a bodhisattva, was myself. At that time, the one who became his younger brother was this place, Black Elephant Abode. At that time, the one who became the king's daughter was this wife. At that time, he also caused him to fall away from the state of celibacy and to abide in the enjoyment of desires.

After doing that, I led him out of there and placed him again in the four concentrations and five superknowledges. Now, again, this one has caused him to fall from the place of pure conduct and has placed him in the enjoyment of desires. I led him out of there and placed him in the ultimate peace and blissful nirvana. Furthermore, this one, having become ordained in the teachings of the perfectly complete Buddha Light Protector, practiced pure conduct there for one lifetime, and having fully matured the faculties, he has now become completely liberated. The Hundred Deeds, Volume Twenty-Nine, called Sarana. The basis of the story is that he was residing in Rajagriha. At that time, in a place called Gyen du, a king named Rab Nang was ruling. In a place called Da Rab, a king named Char Ka was ruling. The two of them were not in harmony with each other, and they often caused many ordinary people to suffer. Then, when the venerable son of Yana abandoned all defilements and directly realized the state of an Arhat, he thought: 'The Blessed One has eliminated many of my sufferings and displeasures, and has accomplished many kinds of happiness and joy. He has eliminated many kinds of sins and unwholesome dharmas, and has accomplished many kinds of wholesome dharmas. Relying on the virtuous friend, the Buddha, the Blessed One, I have crossed the mountain of bones, and dried up the ocean of blood and tears. How should I repay the kindness of that Blessed One?' Then he thought again, 'Whatever Buddhas, Blessed Ones, appear in the world, they all appear only for the benefit of sentient beings. I too should benefit sentient beings.' Then he entered into thought, thinking, 'Are there any who need to be tamed by me?' When he looked, he saw that many people living in a place called Da Rab were especially in need of being tamed by him. Then he went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, bared one shoulder, and with his palms joined together, bowed in the direction of the Blessed One, and said to the Blessed One:

Thus he spoke. Venerable one, we wish to go forth for wandering. The Blessed One said: Son of Katyayana, go forth, liberate others after liberating yourself, free others after freeing yourself, exhale others after exhaling yourself, and cause others to attain complete nirvana after you have attained complete nirvana. Then, the venerable son of Katyayana bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and went forth for wandering with five hundred attendants. Thereafter, they gradually went forth wandering, and arrived at the country of Gye. Having arrived there, he caused the cruel king Rab Snang to enter the Buddha's teachings. Having gone to the country of Dpa' Rab, he caused King Char Ka to abide in perfect faith. Many people also came to have faith in the teachings of the Blessed One. Thereafter, at a later time, the queen of King Char Ka of the country of Dpa' Rab became pregnant. When she had completed nine or ten months, she gave birth to a son who was handsome, pleasing to behold, and beautiful. They held a grand celebration of his birth and named him Sarana. Thereafter, the boy Sarana was raised and nurtured with milk, yogurt, butter, ghee, and the essence of ghee, and he became noble like a lotus in the sea. Thereafter, when he grew up, the boy was made to study letters. He was also taught the various crafts and skills of kings of the Kshatriya caste who had been crowned from the crown of their heads, such as: riding elephants, riding horses, wielding weapons, throwing, throwing forward, throwing backward, escaping from battle, seizing with iron hooks, seizing with ropes, shooting great arrows, shooting vajra single points, stabbing single-pointed weapons, throwing wheels, cutting, striking, seizing with hands, foot movements, protecting the head, throwing far away, throwing with sound, throwing accurately, throwing so as not to be eaten by demons, and throwing violently. He became proficient in these five areas. Thereafter, at a later time, the youth Sarana, relying on the venerable son of Katyayana, gained faith in the teachings of the Blessed One, taking refuge and learn
