May it bring joy, and may unpleasant things not happen. As it is said, monks, I am very similar to the Fully Enlightened Buddha Light Protector (Kasyapa Buddha), with the same power, the same deeds, and the same means. Having attained this, this has pleased me and has not caused displeasure. The Hundred Deeds, the twenty-eighth chapter, 'Light Protector as the Chief' is about being in Nyantu. At that time, a hermit lived in a mountain valley with twelve thousand attendants. That hermit was also one who had reached the end of all treatises, with great magical powers and great strength. He placed those twelve thousand Brahmins in the four meditations and the five superknowledges. Then, when the Blessed One prophesied the ripening of karma in the great Lake Matara (Lake Anavatapta), he went from the lake with five hundred attendants, and from the sky to the grove of King Sheng Guang. That hermit and his entourage also saw the Blessed One going from the lake into the sky. As soon as they saw him, they rejoiced in the Blessed One, abandoned everything, and followed the Blessed One. They entered the grove of King Sheng Guang, went to where the Blessed One was staying, bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One, and sat before him to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Blessed One understood the thoughts, habits, faculties, wisdom, and nature of those twelve thousand hermits, and taught them the Dharma accordingly. Therefore, those twelve thousand hermits, while sitting on their seats, realized the truth and manifested the fruit of non-return in an instant. That chief hermit, however, was satisfied with hearing and arrogant, so he did not achieve anything. Then, those twelve thousand hermits rose from their seats, bared one shoulder, and bowed with folded hands to where the Blessed One was, and said to the Blessed One: Reverend Sir, if we can be ordained in the well-spoken Dharma discipline, be fully ordained, and obtain the nature of a monk, we also at the Blessed One's place

practiced celibacy. Then, the Blessed One ordained those twenty thousand hermits with the words, "Come, monks," and conferred full ordination. He also prophesied to them, and they, through diligence, practice, and effort, abandoned all defilements and directly realized the state of an Arhat. The chief hermit, although ordained, did not attain anything. Then, having heard this, he engaged in effort. Before long, he mastered the three baskets and became a preacher of the Dharma, endowed with wisdom and the confidence of liberation. Then, one day, the thought arose in him: "I teach the Dharma to many thousands of beings, but I myself do not wish to be a teacher of the Dharma. All my friends have attained the state of an Arhat, but having heard this, I am at a loss as to what to do, having attained nothing special. I should abandon listening and meditation and strive for a while." Thus, by contemplating, measuring, and closely examining what he had heard, he abandoned all defilements and directly realized the state of an Arhat. That Arhat, having become free from the desire of the three realms, possessed a mind that regarded gold and dung as equal, possessed a mind that regarded the sky and the palm of his hand as indistinguishable, became as cool as sandalwood soaked in water, shattered the shell of ignorance with wisdom, and, having attained wisdom and supernormal powers, and individual perfect knowledge, did not look to the gains, attachments, and honors of existence, and became a place worshiped, remembered, and respectfully praised by the gods with power and near power. Then the monks pleaded with the Buddha, the Blessed One:

There was a place called Vo. Later, he went to a mountain valley for the sake of roots and fruits. There he saw twenty thousand hermits. As soon as he saw them, he became very happy. He thought: I live in the lay life, but these people must have come out of the lay life. These people must be liberated from samsara, and I should also renounce only for them. So, he abandoned everything and renounced among those hermits. He went there and became proficient in all the treatises. Later, the chief hermit died. The twenty thousand Brahmin boys were very sad because of the hermit's death, crying and lamenting their suffering. Then, the chief Light Protector said to them: Brahmin boys, do not be too sad, do not suffer, do not cry. I will provide all your needs. Then, he gathered all the twenty thousand Brahmin boys and also gave them the teaching of attention. They all developed the four dhyanas and five superknowledges. Later, the chief Light Protector thought: These disciples of mine have realized such a Dharma through my attention, but I have gained nothing because of the pride of hearing. What do I need these hearings for? So, he also developed the four dhyanas and five superknowledges through thinking, measuring, and careful observation. Monks, what do you think? The one who became the chief Light Protector at that time was this hermit. At that time, he also gained nothing because of the pride of hearing. Later, through thinking and measuring the hearing, he carefully observed and developed the four dhyanas and five superknowledges. Now, he also gained nothing before because of the pride of hearing. Later, through thinking, measuring, and carefully observing the hearing, he abandoned all defilements and directly realized the Arhatship. Then, the monks asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: Venerable
