This is the path to the city of tranquility. Thinking that this path will surely produce all perfectly complete Buddhas, he took up a sharp weapon and said: Friend, please accept this offering for the sake of your good words. Having said this, he cut off flesh from one side of his chest and gave it to Indra, the lord of the gods, who had taken the form of a non-human being, and asked: Friend, are you full? He said: I am not full. In the same way, he cut off flesh from the other side of his chest and gave it. In the same way, he cut off and gave the flesh of his arms and all the flesh of his body, and then asked: Friend, are you full? He said: I am not full. Then the Bodhisattva thought: Now is the time to completely give up my body. Then he made a prayer for unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, saying: Alas! By this root of virtue, may I, in a world where the blind have no guide and no teacher, become a Tathagata, an Arhat, a perfectly complete Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, a Sugata, a knower of the world, a tamer of men, an unsurpassed one, a teacher of gods and men, a Buddha, a Bhagavan. Having said this, he spoke in verse: By this great act of giving, may I become a self-born Buddha in all realms. May I cross over and liberate the multitude of beings whom the previous victorious ones have not liberated. Having thus made a prayer for unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, he said: Friend, does this make you happy? As soon as the Bodhisattva generated the mind of enlightenment, the earth shook in six ways. The gods dwelling in the sky also showered down flowers and gave praise, saying: Well done! Friend, well done! You have done an extremely difficult deed. Then Indra, the lord of the gods, thought: This Bodhisattva has done an extremely difficult deed. Although I have the ability to restore his body to its former state, I must do this in order to moderately increase his joy. Then he said to the Bodhisattva: Friend, when I cut your flesh, sever your tendons, and dig out your heart, liver, spleen, and lungs, does your mind

Did even a little displeasure arise? The Bodhisattva said: Friend, when my flesh is cut off, and my sinews and marrow are dissected, not even a little displeasure arises. When I experience suffering, I am solely under the power of compassion for sentient beings born in hells, animals, and pretas. The Lord of the Gods, Indra, in the guise of a non-human, said: Friend, who would believe your words? The Bodhisattva said: I show credibility by urging the truth upon you. Indra said: Since you are so steadfast in urging the truth, may this body of yours be restored to its former state by urging the truth. As soon as he said this, the Bodhisattva said: By the truth and the words of truth, when my flesh is cut off like this, and my sinews and marrow are dissected, not even a little displeasure arises, and when I experience suffering, I am solely under the power of compassion for sentient beings born in hells, animals, and pretas, by these truths and words of truth, may my body be restored to its former state. As soon as he said this, the Bodhisattva's body was restored to its former state. Then, as soon as he saw this, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, rejoiced, made the disguise disappear, transformed into his natural form, prostrated at the feet of the Bodhisattva, and said: I did not make you unhappy with the thought of harming you, I only made you unhappy in order to arouse your joy. From such diligence and such joy as yours, you will undoubtedly awaken to perfect and complete enlightenment; at that time, please remember me. Then, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, asked the Bodhisattva for forgiveness, and immediately disappeared. Monks, what do you think? The one who became King Shibi at that time, who abided in the conduct of a Bodhisattva, was myself, and at that time I was also well-spoken.

If one wishes to speak and to speak well, now that the Thus-Gone One has appeared, why not speak with good words and speak well? Why is that? Monks, it is because I am the first to begin teaching the Dharma! The second story of King Shibi is: From the similarity of reason and previous causes, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, said to the Bodhisattva: What benefit is there in you becoming my disciple? Let me tell you something harmful to you. If you can do that harmful thing, then afterwards I will tell you that verse. The Bodhisattva said: Friend, please speak that verse, and whatever harmful thing you ask me to do, I will do. Friend, please speak the verse completely. As soon as he said that, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, completely spoke that verse in front of the Bodhisattva. Then the Bodhisattva draped his upper garment over one shoulder, and towards that place where the Lord of the Gods, Indra, was in a non-human form, he bowed with folded palms, completely accepted that verse, and recited and studied it for a long time. Just like driving a four-finger-long nail into an empty wooden board, he lay down between two wooden boards and was squeezed. While he was there, being squeezed, he made a prayer for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, saying: Alas! By this root of virtue, may I become the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the perfectly and completely enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Sugata, the knower of the world, the unsurpassed tamer of beings, the teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Bhagavan, in a blind world without a guide or a teacher. Having said that, he spoke this verse: By this great generosity, may I become a self-born Buddha in all existences. May I cross over and liberate the many beings who were not liberated by the previous victors. Then, as soon as he was squeezed between the wooden boards, blood began to flow from the Bodhisattva's entire body, and the earth shook in six ways. The gods dwelling in the sky
