That is fully known. Great king, if one knows that feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are also subject to arising and ceasing, then one fully knows consciousness. Great king, if one fully knows form, one will not think that form is my self, will not take it, will not dwell in it, will not cling to it. Great king, if one fully knows feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness, one will not think that consciousness is my self, will not take it, will not dwell in it, will not cling to it. Great king, if one does not cling to form, does not take it, does not dwell in it, does not cling to it, I say that this is immeasurable, countless, and has passed beyond sorrow. Great king, if one does not cling to feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness, does not take it, does not dwell in it, does not cling to it, I say that this is immeasurable, countless, and has passed beyond sorrow. Then, the Brahmins and householders of Magadha thought thus: If form is not self, and feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are not self, then who will become self, or sentient being, or life, or birth, or nourishment, or person, or strength, or powerful one, or doer, or agent, or speaker, or feeler, or producer, or universal producer? Even if it has not been born and has not arisen, it will not arise, then these aggregates will be abandoned, and other aggregates will not be taken. Then, the Blessed One, knowing the minds of the Brahmins and householders of Magadha with his mind, spoke to the monks: Monks, the so-called self, self, is merely what is grasped separately by those ordinary people who are not endowed with learning, but here there is neither self nor what belongs to self. Monks, when arising, only this suffering arises, and when ceasing, only this suffering ceases. When arising, only these formations arise, and when ceasing, only these formations cease. Relying on those causes and those conditions, the continuum of formations of sentient beings will enter. Monks, thus

Having passed away, he understands the connection of the streams of actions of sentient beings, and performs the transference of death and the bestowal of life. With the divine eye, which is pure and transcends human faculties, he truly knows how sentient beings die and are reborn, and how they are of good or bad complexion, go to happy or unhappy realms, and how sentient beings go according to their actions. Alas! These sentient beings, endowed with evil conduct of body, evil conduct of speech, and evil conduct of mind, who slander the noble ones, hold wrong views, engage in the actions of wrong views, and take up the wrong dharma, because of that cause and condition, after the dissolution of their body, they will be reborn in the hells, the abodes of evil destinies and wrong falls. Alas! These sentient beings, endowed with good conduct of body, good conduct of speech, and good conduct of mind, who do not slander the noble ones, hold right views, engage in the actions of right views, and take up the right dharma, because of that cause and condition, after the dissolution of their body, they will be reborn among the gods of the happy realms and heavens. Monks, since I know and see thus, I do not say, 'I am that self,' or 'I am a sentient being,' or 'I am life,' or 'I am birth,' or 'I am nourishment,' or 'I am a person,' or 'I am strength,' or 'I am the powerful one,' or 'I am the doer,' or 'I am the agent,' or 'I am the speaker,' or 'I am the feeler,' or 'I am the producer,' or 'I am the universal producer.' Even though they are unborn and unoriginated and will not originate, I do not hold that these aggregates are abandoned and other aggregates will be taken up. It is only a designation of dharma. And the designation of dharma is like this: when this exists, this arises; when this is born, this originates. For example, due to ignorance, actions arise; due to actions, consciousness arises; due to consciousness, name and form arise; due to name and form, the sense bases arise.

Six sense bases arise. Conditioned by the six sense bases, contact arises. Conditioned by contact, feeling arises. Conditioned by feeling, craving arises. Conditioned by craving, grasping arises. Conditioned by grasping, becoming arises. Conditioned by becoming, birth arises. Conditioned by birth, aging and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and agitation arise. Thus, this entire mass of suffering arises. This is how it is: When this exists, this arises. With the cessation of this, this ceases. This is how it is: With the cessation of ignorance, activities cease. With the cessation of activities, consciousness ceases. With the cessation of consciousness, name and form cease. With the cessation of name and form, the six sense bases cease. With the cessation of the six sense bases, contact ceases. With the cessation of contact, feeling ceases. With the cessation of feeling, craving ceases. With the cessation of craving, grasping ceases. With the cessation of grasping, becoming ceases. With the cessation of becoming, birth ceases. With the cessation of birth, aging and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and agitation cease. Thus, this entire mass of suffering ceases. Monks, thus, when the cause arises, suffering arises, and when the cause ceases, suffering ceases. Because the path is cut off, it does not lead to it, and because the connection is broken, it ceases, and the end of suffering is just that. Then, the Blessed One twice instructed King Bimbisara of Magadha. Great King, what do you think? Is form permanent or impermanent? He replied: Venerable sir, it is impermanent. He said: Is that which is impermanent suffering or not suffering? He replied: Venerable sir, it is suffering. He said: Is it proper for a well-taught noble disciple to regard that which is impermanent, suffering, and subject to change as 'This is mine, this I am, this is my self'? He replied: Venerable sir, it is not.
