Having gone to where the Bhagavan was, the Raja with Form Heart, having ridden on the mount, having ridden to the place where one should go by riding, having left the five राजधर्म, namely the crown, the umbrella, the sword, the jewel, and the yak-tail fan, and the fancy shoes, having gone to where the Bhagavan was, when the Raja with Form Heart saw five hundred Rajas who were very handsome and very beautiful sitting in front of the Bhagavan listening to the Dharma, whatever pride he had due to his appearance disappeared. Then he thought to himself: If I do not mention my name and lineage, the Bhagavan might not notice me. Then he went to where the Bhagavan was, and having arrived, draped his upper garment over one shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and with his palms joined together, bowed towards where the Bhagavan was, and spoke his name and lineage three times: Venerable one, I am the lord of the land of Magadha, the Raja with Form Heart. Venerable one, I am the Raja of the land of Magadha, the Raja with Form Heart. Then the Bhagavan said: Great Raja, that is who you are, you are the Raja of the land of Magadha, the Raja with Form Heart. Great Raja, please sit on your own seat. Then the Raja of the land of Magadha, the Raja with Form Heart, bowed his head to the feet of the Bhagavan, and sat to one side. Some of the Brahmins and householders of the land of Magadha bowed their heads to the feet of the Bhagavan, and sat to one side. Some engaged in various kinds of pleasant and satisfying talk with the Bhagavan, and then sat to one side. Some, with their palms joined together, bowed towards where the Bhagavan was, and then sat to one side. Some, from a distance, saw the Bhagavan, and then sat to one side. At that time, the venerable Jaṭila Kāśyapa also gathered in that assembly and sat down. Then the Brahmins and householders of the land of Magadha thought to themselves: Is this great śramaṇa Kāśyapa

Does one practice brahmacharya in the presence of a śramaṇa? Or does one think of practicing brahmacharya in the presence of the elder Jyotiḥpāla Jaṭila, the great ascetic? Then, the Blessed One, knowing the minds of the Brahmins and householders of the country of Magadha, spoke in verses to the venerable Jyotiḥpāla: "Jyotiḥpāla, what have you seen that you dwell here? Here you have abandoned fire, abandoned the ascetic practices of a ṛṣi. Jyotiḥpāla, why have you abandoned the fire sacrifice? Please tell me the reason for that in its entirety." He replied: "Here some praise foods and drinks, essences, retinues, and women. Seeing those as the impurities of the aggregates, I do not delight in fire sacrifices." He taught: "You do not delight in desires, nor do you delight in foods, drinks, cushions, etc., then how in the world of gods and humans do you find joy? Jyotiḥpāla, receive the answer to your question!" He replied: "There is no aggregate, no pacification, nothing at all. Not clinging to desire and existence, it does not change. Seeing the state that others cannot seize, I do not delight in fire sacrifices. Through sacrifices and the fires of asceticism, thinking to be liberated, my mind was also deluded. Without death and transmigration, not seeing the supreme place, I became blind, following birth and death. The supreme protector, the best of men, has spoken well of the unconditioned. I have now seen that state. The capable guide, the source of true power, you have appeared for the sake of many beings." He taught: "For the fully distinguished dharmas, in what way does one enter, you have thought well. You have determined it, well done! Jyotiḥpāla, cause your retinue to generate renunciation!" Then, the venerable Jyotiḥpāla Jaṭila entered into such a samādhi of equanimity, and having manifested in the sky above the east, he performed the four postures: walking, standing, sitting, and lying down. Entering into the fire element samādhi, from the body of the venerable Jyotiḥpāla Jaṭila, having entered into the fire element samādhi, various kinds of rays of light arose, blue.

From the upper part of his body, flames blazed, and from the lower part of his body, a stream of cold water flowed. From the lower part of his body, flames blazed, and from the upper part of his body, a stream of cold water flowed. Just as he did in the east, he did the same in the south, west, and north. Then, the venerable Jaṭila Uruvilvā Kāśyapa, having shown four kinds of miracles in each of the four directions, gathered up the manifestation of miracles, draped his upper robe over one shoulder, pressed his right knee into the ground, and, with his palms joined, bowed down in the direction of the Blessed One, and said to the Blessed One: "The Blessed One is my teacher. I am a disciple of the Blessed One. The Sugata is my teacher. I am a disciple of the Sugata." The Blessed One said: "Kāśyapa, it is so. It is so, Kāśyapa, your teacher is me. You are my disciple. Kāśyapa, sit as is your own seat." Then, the venerable Jaṭila Uruvilvā Kāśyapa sat as is his own seat. Then, the Brahmins and householders of the land of Magadha thought: "Jaṭila Uruvilvā Kāśyapa practices the holy life under the great ascetic Gautama, not the great ascetic under Jaṭila Uruvilvā Kāśyapa." Then, the Blessed One spoke to King Bimbisāra, the well-crafted Image of the land of Magadha: "Great King, form arises and also ceases, its arising should be known, and its ceasing should be known. Great King, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness also arise and also cease, their arising should be known, and their ceasing should be known. Great King, having known that form is of the nature of arising and ceasing, form
