He thought that nothing would happen. Then they said to each other, 'This is our elder brother.' The father thought, 'Among enemies, it is like this, the mother's instigation is not good, this person will be killed, so drive him away.' Even so, if I give him something, he will be killed on the road because of his insatiable greed.' He thought, 'I will send him back to his mother.' So he wrote a letter to him: 'From the residence, go about one yojana to the east, from village to village, under the horse-ear tree, have a skillful and prudent person dig, please enjoy the property that I share with you. Whatever is around your neck, give it as a ring.' He wrote such a letter and gave it to him. He took the letter and set off. The younger brothers stopped him on the road and asked, 'What did you get from your father?' He said, 'I didn't get anything, I just got this letter.' They said, 'This must be a trick of the father, go away.' And they let him go. He finally returned to his own home, rested for a while. After sitting for a while, the mother asked, 'What did you get from your father?' The son said, 'I didn't get anything, I just got this letter.' The mother said, 'Son, you were deceived by your father, you just made a trip for nothing, you didn't get anything.' The son said, 'That place is big, it won't deceive me.' So he began to interpret the letter. 'From the village' means the place where he was born, here it is indicated by 'village.' 'To the village' means the place where he was abandoned, it is the cremation ground. 'Under the horse-ear tree,' 'horse' refers to a horse, 'ear tree' refers to a horse-ear tree, it refers to under the horse-ear tree. 'From the residence to the east' refers to the east. 'About one yojana' refers to only one yojana.' He interpreted the poem in this way, and at night when there were few people, he went to the cemetery, where there was a tree called the horse-ear tree, he measured the east side of that tree, dug a yoke's length, and after a while, dug out gold.

Seeing a bottle with a pearl necklace tied around its neck, he was overjoyed, picked it up, and went home. He untied the pearl necklace and gave it to his son. Monks, what do you think? The one who was the householder at that time was myself. The one who was his son at that time was this Jīvaka. At that time, he also understood what I meant. Even now, he understands what I mean. Then Jīvaka thought: The Blessed One has a vajra-like body and is large, so a small amount of medicinal oil cannot cure this. So he carefully weighed and measured thirty-two srangs of medicinal oil and offered it to the Blessed One's body. The remainder in the bowl was distributed to the monks, and the monks thought: This is the remainder in the Blessed One's bowl, so they bowed and drank it. Then Devadatta thought: I will also drink medicinal oil. So he asked Jīvaka: Jīvaka, how much medicinal oil did the Śramaṇa Gautama drink? Jīvaka said: Thirty-two srangs were offered. Devadatta said: I will also drink thirty-two srangs. Jīvaka said: The Blessed One has a vajra-like body and is large, so he can digest that much medicinal oil, but you cannot digest it. Devadatta said: I am also a vajra-like body, why can't I digest it? Having said that, he also drank thirty-two srangs. Then the Blessed One digested it, but Devadatta did not digest it. Then the next day, Jīvaka again offered the Blessed One medicinal oil mixed with rice gruel. Devadatta, because the Blessed One accepted the offering, driven by arrogance, drank the medicinal oil mixed in rice gruel without digesting it. As a result, he was struck by severe pain, struck by a disease that hit the vital point. Therefore, he experienced severe and unbearable suffering, fever, and unpleasant feelings, and could not sleep day or night. The venerable Ānanda, because he loved his brother, told this matter to the Blessed One.

Then, the Blessed One extended his hand, which was like an elephant's trunk, adorned with wheels, auspicious marks, and swastikas, born from countless merits, and capable of exhaling all fears. He took it from the peak of Vulture Peak Mountain and placed it on Devadatta's head, making a statement of truth. "By whatever truth, just as I have no increase or decrease in my mind towards my only son Rahula, and I have the same mind towards Devadatta, by this truth, may this person's illness be pacified." Having said this, at the very moment of making the statement of truth, Devadatta's illness was pacified, and he was revived from death. Then he saw the hand of the Blessed One and recognized it. He thought, "This is the hand of the Shramana Gautama." Because he had long been covered and controlled by the arrogance achieved through deceit in his mind, even though the greatness of the Buddha himself had pacified his illness, he still said, "Gautama, you have learned medicine well, and this enables you to earn a living." Then, those present proclaimed, "Devadatta was afflicted by a severe illness and was on the verge of death, but the Blessed One healed him by making a statement of truth." Even those who were very biased towards Devadatta heard this and praised the greatness of the Blessed One. "Alas, this (Buddha's) loving-kindness is truly perfectly complete! Alas, he has cultivated compassion for sentient beings!" Then, the monks said to Devadatta, "Devadatta, you were healed by the Blessed One, otherwise you would have already died." Devadatta said, "This is a deceptive illusion that bewilders the mind, and therefore it pacifies the entire world." Then, they thought, "This person is ungrateful and unappreciative." So, they went directly to where the Blessed One was, and upon arriving, they had doubts. In order to dispel all doubts, they requested the Buddha, the Blessed One, "Venerable One, please look at Devadatta, who is ungrateful, unappreciative, and has betrayed your kindness in saving his life." The Blessed One said, "Now
