Let him say, 'The magical power has diminished.' Thus he commanded. Then Ananda went to Rajagriha and proclaimed to the Brahmins and householders in the main roads, lanes, crossroads, and triple junctions: 'From now on, do not accuse the Blessed One with faults.' Then, one day, the Blessed One became ill, and the physician Jivaka offered the Blessed One a medicinal oil called Iron Arrow. Then, the Blessed One said to the king of physicians, Jivaka: 'Jivaka, what is more rare?' Jivaka replied: 'Blessed One, the Blessed One is more rare.' The Blessed One said: 'Jivaka, what is more wonderful?' Jivaka replied: 'Blessed One, the Blessed One is more wonderful.' The Blessed One said: 'Jivaka, do you know?' Jivaka replied: 'Blessed One, I know.' The Blessed One said: 'Jivaka, do you not know?' Jivaka replied: 'Blessed One, I do not know.' The Blessed One said: 'Jivaka, what is more rare?' Jivaka replied: 'Blessed Ones eat grass and drink water, and from that, this nectar is produced, and with it, the medicinal oil called Iron Arrow is healed.' The Blessed One said: 'Jivaka, what is more wonderful?' Jivaka replied: 'Blessed One, from the Blessed One's appearance in the world, the sacred Dharma is taught, and the good practice of the Sangha arises.' The Blessed One said: 'Jivaka, what do you know?' Jivaka replied: 'Blessed One, all who are born will die, I know.' The Blessed One said: 'Jivaka, what do you not know?' Jivaka replied: 'Blessed One, I do not know where you will go.' Then, the monks became doubtful, and to cut off all doubts, they asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: 'Venerable, Jivaka observed the Blessed One's thoughts and spoke, please observe.' The Blessed One said: 'Monks, it is not only now, but in the past, he also understood my thoughts. Listen to how he understood. Monks, in the past, in a secluded village, there lived a wealthy householder, rich in possessions and enjoying great wealth, who, due to circumstances, took a wife. He and she played together, rejoiced, and enjoyed themselves. As they played together, rejoiced, and enjoyed themselves, one day his wife became pregnant, and she

When he was nine or ten years old, a boy was born. For his birth, a grand celebration was held for seven days, three days, or twenty-one days, and he was named according to the family tradition. After that, he indulged in play and joy, and another son was born. Again, his birth was celebrated grandly, and he was named according to the family tradition. Then he thought, 'I should take the wealth and goods that I have already acquired and go to another place to repay debts and enjoy wealth.' Then he thought again, 'My wife is beautiful, and if I give her a lot of karshapanas (karṣāpaṇa, ancient Sanskrit coin name) and leave, she is likely to indulge in pleasure with other men. Instead, I should give her a small amount of karshapanas and leave.' So, he gave her a small amount of karshapanas, and then put the gold that was not karshapanas into a vase, sealed the mouth of the vase with a pearl necklace, buried it in the cemetery under a tree called Shimshapa (śiṃśapā, Indian neem tree), and then took the goods and went to another place. There he earned a lot of money, and he married another wife and had many sons. Then, the former wife, named Ghadubu, barely managed to raise her two sons with the work she had on hand. The two sons asked, 'Where has our father gone?' The mother said, 'Son, he is in such and such a place, and it is said that he has a great deal of wealth. Go there, and if possible, he may give you some living expenses.' So, the elder brother set out to find his father, wandering from one road to another, and finally came to his father. The father recognized him from his appearance and exclaimed, 'Where do you come from? Where are you going now?' Then he told his story in detail. The father thought, 'This is indeed my son.' So, he kept him by his side and instructed him, 'Son, do not tell anyone that I am your father.' Then, he became very fond of him. Later, the other sons asked, 'Father, whose child is this?' The father said, 'This is the son of my friend.' Then they thought, 'He is so fond of him, this must be his son.'
