The Buddha, with his wisdom eye, looked upon the world: Who is declining? Who is prospering? Who is impoverished? Who is pitiable? Who is afflicted with harm? Who is impoverished, pitiable, and afflicted with harm? Who is inclined towards evil destinies? Who is falling into evil destinies? Who has already fallen into evil destinies? Whom shall I rescue from evil destinies and place in the heavens, liberation, and fruition? Whom shall I pull from the mud of misdeeds by the hand? Who lacks the seven noble riches, whom shall I empower with the dominion of the seven noble riches? Who has not generated roots of virtue, whom shall I cause to generate? Who has already generated roots of virtue, whom shall I cause to fully ripen? Who has fully ripened roots of virtue, whom shall I pierce with the sword of wisdom? Whom shall I make possess a world adorned by the appearance of the Buddha, complete with fruits? Thus, the gaze of wisdom arises. The ocean is the abode of aquatic creatures, and the tidal waves may cease, but for the sons to be tamed, the Buddha's time never expires. Then, the Blessed One thought: The time has come to tame the naked ascetic Light Protector and his kin. Having thought thus, he emerged from the Grove of Light and went to the place where the naked ascetic Light Protector and his kin were staying. The naked ascetic Light Protector and his kin saw the Buddha, the Blessed One, from afar. Having seen him, they went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, they exchanged various pleasant and joyful words with the Blessed One, and then sat down on one side. Then, the naked ascetic Light Protector and his kin asked the Blessed One thus: O Gautama, if you would listen, for the sake of asking and opening the opportunity for questioning, I would like to ask you a few things here. The Blessed One said: Light Protector, wait a moment, I must go to Rajagriha for alms, now is not the time for you to ask. You can come outside the Bamboo Grove Monastery, there it will be the time for you to ask. He replied: O Gautama, if I were to go elsewhere, and also

Even if Gautama were to change into something else, it is possible. Like this, two or three times, the naked ascetic Light Protector and his clan reported: If you allow me to ask, for the sake of prophesying the asking, if you open the door of convenience, then Gautama, I will ask you some questions here. Then between two and three times, the Blessed One said to the naked ascetic Light Protector and his clan: Light Protector, for the moment I must go to Rajagriha for alms, therefore the time for you to ask for prophecy has not yet come. Please come outside the Bamboo Grove Monastery, there the time for you to ask for prophecy will come. Reporting: O Gautama, If you allow me to ask, for the sake of prophesying the asking, if you open the door of convenience, then Gautama, I will ask you some questions here. The Blessed One said: Light Protector, if you must talk about this matter two or three times, then Light Protector, ask whatever you want! Reporting: Gautama, what is it? Is suffering self-made? The Blessed One said: Light Protector, I have not said that suffering is self-made. O Gautama, what is it? Is suffering made by others? Light Protector, I have not prophesied that suffering is made by others. O Gautama, what is it? Is suffering made by oneself and also made by others? Light Protector, I have not prophesied that suffering is made by oneself and also made by others. O Gautama, what is it? Is suffering not made by oneself, nor made by others, nor produced by causes and conditions? Light Protector, I have not prophesied this either. Gautama, what is it? Is suffering made by oneself, made by others, and not produced by causes and conditions? Having asked this, do you also say that you have not prophesied? Light Protector, is suffering made by oneself, made by others, and not produced by causes and conditions? If you ask this, I say that I have not prophesied. O Gautama, what is it? Is there no suffering at all? Light Protector, suffering is not completely non-existent, but it is indeed existent. O Gautama, if suffering is self-made, then how can I understand and see suffering?
