also there is no equal. In the world with the gods, there is no equal to you, sir. Great hero, I salute you; supreme one, I pay homage to you. You who extract the arrow of existence, I salute you, born of the solar lineage. The Blessed One said: Kausika, do you remember ever experiencing such attainment of truth and attainment of delight? Indra replied: I remember experiencing the attainment of delight, but I do not remember experiencing the attainment of truth. Venerable one, once when the gods and the non-gods were engaged in battle, the gods were victorious and the non-gods were defeated. I then thought to myself: Now I shall go to the city of the gods, and whatever enjoyments the gods have, and whatever enjoyments the non-gods have, I shall gather them all together and enjoy them with joy. That was the attainment of delight, but it was an end of prolonged fighting, an end of seeking faults, an end of battling, an end of contention. Venerable one, my attainment of delight and seeing the truth is an end of prolonged absence of fighting, an end of absence of seeking faults, an end of absence of battling, an end of absence of contention. Venerable one, whatever kindness the Blessed One has bestowed upon me by allowing me to follow the Dharma, I think to myself: Having passed away from this place, may I share the same fate as humans, being born into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family, with abundant possessions, resources, and wealth, and with a lineage rich in treasures, grains, gold, silver, storehouses, and granaries, and with many friends, companions, brothers, relatives, and many male servants, female servants, workers, and those who live by wages. May I be born into such a household, sharing the same fate. Then, having gradually been born and having matured my faculties, having given alms and performed virtuous deeds, having shaved my hair and beard, having donned dyed robes, and having gone forth from home to homelessness with genuine faith, venerable one, I shall dwell appropriately, and if I receive instructions, I shall act according to the instructions.

May it be so! If I can abide here, I will think that this is the end of suffering. If I do not receive a prophecy, then may I be born into the body of a deity with form, with faculties intact and complete, endowed with all limbs, with a good complexion, having light within myself, able to walk in the sky, eating joyful food, possessing joyful food, long-lived and abiding there for a long time, may I be born there without rival! Having died from this divine body, abandoning the life of a non-human, entering the womb without delusion. My mind delights in discipline, I will not be impoverished by instructions, having a basis on the path of the teachings, engaging in pure conduct, I will practice alms-begging. If I can abide here, if I can receive a prophecy, I will act as prophesied, that will be the end of my suffering. If it does not happen like that, when the end of life is exhausted, where will I be born? That is, may I be born in Akanishta. Blessed One, I have entered the stream. Sugata, I have entered the stream. I also hope to become a once-returner. The Blessed One said: Kauśika! Well done! Well done! You have that fortune, and it can also be obtained through diligence. Indra prayed: Who can pacify me and determine that I have entered the stream? Blessed One, there is no one other than you, there is nothing other than your teachings. Such a vast and excellent first basis, where else can it be seen? Such excellent achievements, never before obtained from elsewhere. Venerable, I am here, while doing the body of a deity, I have obtained longevity, please, wise one, accept it as such. When this Dharma discourse was spoken, the lord of the gods, Indra, and eighty thousand gods, arose with a stainless and pure Dharma eye, seeing the truth, they died from that seat, and were reborn on that very seat. Thus, his death and rebirth were as fast as the blink of an eye, invisible, and the Blessed One knew it through the touch of the body. The lord of the gods

And also the Asura maiden De and others realized it. Then the Asura maiden De and others said to the Lord of the Gods, Śakra: "Kauśika, have you died and been reborn?" Śakra said: "De and others, I have died and been reborn, and while dwelling here, I have regained my life." Then the Lord of the Gods, Śakra, seeing the truth, rejoiced and was satisfied, greatly rejoiced and was pleased. Having generated joy and happiness, he rose from his seat, draped his upper garment over one shoulder, and bowed with folded hands in the direction of the Blessed One, saying to the Blessed One: "Venerable One, I am noble! I am noble! From this day forth, as long as I live, may the Blessed One accept me as a lay follower, one who has gone for refuge with joy in his heart." Then the Lord of the Gods, Śakra, said to the Gandharva's son, Pañcaśikha: "Son, you are beneficial and bring happiness to me, for it was you who first urged me to go to the Blessed One. Son Pañcaśikha, when we go from here to the realm of the Thirty-three Gods, the daughter of the Gandharva king Tumburu, named Bhadra, the Radiant One, whom you have long desired and longed for, I will give to you as your wife. And the lord of the Gandharvas will also place you on the throne of your father." Then the Lord of the Gods, Śakra, said to the Thirty-three Gods: "Friends, whatever homage I formerly paid to Brahmā, the lord of the world, at the three times, homage befitting Brahmā, from now on I will pay that homage to this Blessed One, homage befitting Brahmā. Why is that? Because this Blessed One is Brahmā. He has become Brahmā. He is peaceful. He has become peaceful." Then the Lord of the Gods, Śakra, and the other gods bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One, circumambulated the Blessed One three times, faced forward and retreated, and while paying homage to the Blessed One, the Lord of the Gods, Śakra, from a place invisible to the eye, draped his upper garment over one shoulder, the Blessed One.
