Then, the Blessed One, having praised and rejoiced, asked the Blessed One for a further request: Venerable, what is it? Have all ascetics and Brahmins achieved the ultimate of eternity, are they forever free from defilement, and have they forever reached the perfection of pure conduct? The Blessed One said: Kausika, not all ascetics and Brahmins are the ultimate of eternity, not forever free from defilement, and not forever reached the perfection of pure conduct. Whichever ascetic or Brahmin, who has attained the unsurpassed liberation, life is completely extinguished, and the mind is completely liberated, those are the ultimate of eternity, those are forever free from defilement, and those have forever reached the perfection of pure conduct. The Lord of the Gods, Indra, said: Venerable, that is so, that is so. Not all ascetics and Brahmins have achieved the ultimate of eternity, are forever free from defilement, and have forever reached the perfection of pure conduct. Whichever ascetic or Brahmin, who has attained the unsurpassed liberation, life is completely extinguished, and the mind is completely liberated, those are the ultimate of eternity, those are forever free from defilement, and those have forever reached the perfection of pure conduct. I have understood the meaning of what the Blessed One has said, I have understood the Dharma, having transcended doubt, freed from hesitation, having pulled out the poisoned arrow, so that I will not be completely disappointed, the thought of "Who am I?" will not arise again in my mind. Venerable, the special realizations of the requests and prophecies that I have not yet obtained, now I have relied on the Blessed One for a long time, thus the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One has spoken, and the poisoned arrow of doubt and duality has been uprooted from its root. The Blessed One said: Kausika, do you remember ever asking other ascetics and Brahmins such questions before? The Lord of the Gods, Indra, said: Venerable, I remember, there was once...

In the Sudharma Hall, the assembly place of the gods of the Thirty-Three (Trayastriṃśa), the gods gathered and sat down. Thus, they were seeking the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened One, but they did not find the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened One. Then, they rose from their seats and departed separately. Among those who departed, the god known as Mahadeva passed away from his abode and disappeared. Monks, because the god known as Mahadeva passed away from his abode, I also became frightened and uneasy. I thought: Will I also not pass away from this place? Then, I dwelt alone in solitude as a renunciate and a Brahmin. Whomever I saw, I thought they were the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened One. When I went to them, they would ask me: Who are you? I would tell them: I am Indra, the lord of the gods. They would be delighted and pleased, and would especially say: Ah, I have seen Indra. They would ask me, but I would not ask them. They would seek refuge in me, but I would not seek refuge in them. Now, henceforth, I am a disciple of the Blessed One, and I take refuge in the Blessed One. There is no end to realization. I have doubts and hesitations. In order to seek the Tathagata, I wandered for a long time. If I, a blind man, were to attend to the Fully Awakened One, how would I please them? When I asked them about the path and the way to practice, they did not know those things either. Whatever I slightly desired, through contemplation, analysis, and the coming and going of the mind, the mind understood the mind, and the intention became known through intention. Today, the Blessed One is proclaimed and prophesied by the Arhat. You are the Buddha, the teacher, you are the Victorious One, you have subdued the Maras. Having cut off the latent tendencies, you have crossed over and liberated beings. In the world, you are the Buddha, there is none greater than you.
