You say that one should not rely on phenomena that can be fabricated. Then what kind of phenomena that can be known by the mind should one rely on? You say that one should rely on such phenomena that can be known by the mind, which can completely diminish non-virtuous phenomena and manifestly increase virtuous phenomena. Having understood this meaning spoken by the Bhagavan, I have transcended doubt and am free from hesitation. Then, having heard the teaching and prophecy from the Bhagavan, the lord of the gods, Indra, praised the Bhagavan's words and rejoiced, and asked the Bhagavan the next question: Venerable one, what phenomena should a bhikshu who has entered the path of cessation of elaboration abandon? What phenomena should he strive for? The Bhagavan said: Kausika, a bhikshu who has entered the path of cessation of elaboration should abandon three phenomena and strive for three phenomena. For example, with what does one contemplate and examine? Kausika, I say that with regard to words, there are also two types: those that should be relied upon and those that should not be relied upon. Among them, having ascertained through words, whatever is known to be unsuitable for abiding, I say that those should be definitely abandoned. Among them, having ascertained through words, whatever is known to be suitable for abiding, I say that in that case, the Tathagata, knowing when to declare it, should cultivate it with mindfulness and awareness. Among them, having ascertained through observation, whatever is known to be unsuitable for abiding, I say that those should be definitely abandoned. Among them, having ascertained through observation, whatever is known to be suitable for abiding, I say that in that case, the Tathagata, knowing when to declare it, should cultivate it with mindfulness and awareness. The lord of the gods, Indra, reported: Venerable one, it is so. It is so, for a bhikshu who has entered the path of cessation of elaboration, the three phenomena are

Should be abandoned. One should strive for the three dharmas, namely words, thoughts, and examination. Venerable one, words should also be relied upon, and there are two situations, those that should not be relied upon, you say. Among them, regarding what is known to be inappropriate to abide by words, you say that it should be clearly abandoned. Among them, regarding what is known to be appropriate to abide by words, you say that when the Tathagata prophesies this, one should abide with mindfulness and awareness. Venerable one, thoughts and examination should also be relied upon, and there are two situations, those that should not be relied upon, you say. Among them, regarding what is known to be inappropriate to abide by examination, you say that it should be clearly abandoned. Among them, regarding what is known to be appropriate to abide by examination, you say that when the Tathagata prophesies this, one should abide with mindfulness and awareness. I have understood the meaning of what the Bhagavan said: if one relies on certain words, unwholesome dharmas will increase, and wholesome dharmas will decrease, such words should not be relied upon, you say. If one relies on certain words, unwholesome dharmas will decrease, and wholesome dharmas will increase, such words should be relied upon, you say. If one relies on certain thoughts and examination, unwholesome dharmas will increase, and wholesome dharmas will decrease, such thoughts and examination should not be relied upon, you say. If one relies on certain examination, unwholesome dharmas will decrease, and wholesome dharmas will increase, such thoughts and examination should be relied upon, you say.
