Then he asked again: Venerable, what is the basis of desire? What is the cause of arising? What is the aspect? From what does it arise? What exists that desire arises? What does not exist that desire does not arise? The Blessed One said: Kausika, the basis of desire is conceptualization. The cause of arising is conceptualization. The aspect is conceptualization. The arising is conceptualization. If conceptualization exists, desire arises, and if conceptualization does not exist, desire does not arise. The Lord of the Gods, Indra, said: Venerable, it is so. It is so, the basis of desire is conceptualization. The cause of arising is conceptualization. The aspect is conceptualization. The arising is conceptualization. If conceptualization exists, desire arises, and if conceptualization does not exist, desire does not arise. I have understood the meaning of what the Blessed One has said, and I have transcended doubt and am free from hesitation. After that, having heard the prophecy requested from the Blessed One by the Lord of the Gods, Indra, having manifestly praised and rejoiced in the Blessed One's teachings, he asked the Blessed One again: Venerable, what is the basis of conceptualization? What is the cause of arising? What is the aspect? From what does it arise? What exists that conceptualization arises? What does not exist that conceptualization does not arise? The Blessed One said: Kausika, the basis of conceptualization is proliferation. The cause of arising is proliferation. The aspect is proliferation. The arising is proliferation. If proliferation exists, conceptualization arises, and if proliferation does not exist, conceptualization does not arise. Kausika, thus, if proliferation exists, conceptualization arises. If conceptualization exists, desire arises. If desire exists, joy and displeasure arise. If joy and displeasure exist, jealousy and miserliness arise. If jealousy and miserliness exist, then grasping sticks, grasping weapons, fighting, revealing secrets, gambling and arguing, deceiving and seducing, cutting off with punishment, lying, and various kinds of sinful and unwholesome dharmas arise, thus a great heap of suffering
