This great mass of suffering will arise. Thus, if there is no elaboration, no conceptualization will arise. If there is no conceptualization, no desire will arise. If there is no desire, no liking or disliking will arise. If there is no liking or disliking, no jealousy or miserliness will arise. If there is no jealousy or miserliness, seizing sticks and seizing weapons, fighting and exposing faults, disputing and arguing, deceiving and seducing, cutting with punishment, speaking falsehoods, and various kinds of sinful and unwholesome dharmas will cease. Thus, this great mass of suffering will cease. The Lord of the Gods, Indra, asked: Venerable one, it is so. It is so, the basis of conceptualization is elaboration. The cause of arising is elaboration. The aspect is elaboration. The birth is elaboration. If elaboration exists, conceptualization will arise, and if elaboration does not exist, conceptualization will not arise. Having understood this meaning spoken by the Blessed One, I have transcended hesitation and am free from doubt. Then, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, having heard the prophecy of the Blessed One's question, praised and rejoiced in the words spoken by the Blessed One, and asked the Blessed One the next question: Venerable one, you speak of the path to the cessation of elaboration, venerable one, what is the path to the cessation of elaboration? Which path does a monk enter to enter the path to the cessation of elaboration? The Blessed One said: Kauśika, the path to the cessation of elaboration is the Noble Eightfold Path, namely: right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. This is called the path to the cessation of elaboration, and a monk who enters such a path is called one who has entered the path to the cessation of elaboration. The Lord of the Gods, Indra, asked: Venerable one, it is so. It is so, entering the path to the cessation of elaboration

Yes, that is so. Having understood the meaning of what the Blessed One has spoken, I have transcended doubt and am free from hesitation. Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, having heard the prophecy requested from the Blessed One, praised the words spoken by the Blessed One and rejoiced after, asked the Blessed One: "Venerable one, what are the causes for the Pratimoksha vows of a monk who has entered the path that will prevent elaboration?" The Blessed One said: "Kauśika, there are six causes for the Pratimoksha vows of a monk who has entered the path that will prevent elaboration. What are the six? They are the forms cognizable by the eye, the sounds cognizable by the ear, the smells cognizable by the nose, the tastes cognizable by the tongue, the tactile objects cognizable by the body, and the dharmas cognizable by the mind. Kauśika, with respect to forms cognizable by the eye, there are two kinds: those to be relied upon and those not to be relied upon. Among those forms cognizable by the eye, if I know that they are not suitable to abide in, I will say: 'They must be abandoned.' Among those forms cognizable by the eye, if I know that they are suitable to abide in, I will say: 'They should be relied upon.' Thus, the Tathagata shows the time of prophecy to be known. Similarly, with respect to sounds cognizable by the ear, smells cognizable by the nose, tastes cognizable by the tongue, tactile objects cognizable by the body, and dharmas cognizable by the mind, there are also two kinds: those to be relied upon and those not to be relied upon, I will say. Among those dharmas cognizable by the mind, if I know that they are not suitable to abide in, I will say: 'They must be completely abandoned.' Among those dharmas cognizable by the mind, if I know that they are suitable to abide in, then, at the appropriate time, the Tathagata knows the time of the prophecy to be cultivated, and with mindfulness and awareness, they should be cultivated, I will say."

Asked by Śakra, Lord of the Devas: "Venerable one, it is like this. It is like this: A bhikṣu who has entered the path that cuts off elaboration has six causal dharmas for the vows of individual liberation: forms cognizable by the eye, sounds cognizable by the ear, smells cognizable by the nose, tastes cognizable by the tongue, tactile objects cognizable by the body, and dharmas cognizable by the mind. In this regard, venerable one, with respect to forms cognizable by the eye, there are two kinds: those that should be relied upon and those that should not be relied upon, you say. Those forms cognizable by the eye that, having been discerned, are known to be unsuitable for abiding, you say, those should be completely abandoned. Those forms cognizable by the eye that, having been discerned, are known to be suitable for abiding, you say, at the appropriate time, the Tathāgata foresees that they should be cultivated with mindfulness and awareness. The same applies to dharmas cognizable by the mind. I understand the meaning of what the Blessed One has said in this way: If one relies on what kind of forms cognizable by the eye, it will cause unwholesome dharmas to increase and wholesome dharmas to decline, you say, such forms cognizable by the eye should not be relied upon. If one relies on what kind of forms cognizable by the eye, it will cause unwholesome dharmas to decline and wholesome dharmas to increase, you say, such forms cognizable by the eye should be relied upon. Similarly, with respect to sounds cognizable by the ear, smells cognizable by the nose, tastes cognizable by the tongue, tactile objects cognizable by the body, and dharmas cognizable by the mind, if one relies on what kind of things, it will cause unwholesome dharmas to increase and wholesome dharmas to decline, such dharmas cognizable by the mind
