All Videhas were pervaded by great light. Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, entered Indra's Rock Cave and saw the Blessed One absorbed in the fire element samadhi. Having seen this, he thought: Since the Buddha, the Blessed One, is absorbed in the fire element samadhi, the time for me to go and see the Blessed One, to behold him, and to pay homage to him has not yet come. So, he remained silent for a moment and said to the Gandharva's son, Five Crests: Son Five Crests, can you first awaken the Blessed One from samadhi? If you do so, it will be easier for us to go and see him and to pay homage to him afterwards. Five Crests said: Kauśika (कौशिक, kauśika, कौशिका), I am very capable. Having said this, he took five hundred attendants and a lute, and went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, he requested the Blessed One to arise with verses suitable for the chief and the Arhat. Then, he went to where the lord of the gods, Indra, was and said to him: Kauśika (कौशिक, kauśika, कौशिका), the Blessed One has arisen. The time has come for you to go and see the Blessed One and to pay homage to him. Then the Blessed One thought: Alas, this Indra's Rock Cave is very narrow and the assembly of gods is very large. How can I bless this cave so that the lord of the gods, Indra, together with his retinue, can easily listen to the Dharma and sit comfortably? Thinking this, the Blessed One blessed Indra's Rock Cave to be spacious. Then the lord of the gods, Indra, together with the Asura's daughter Good Birth and eighty thousand gods, went to where the Blessed One was. They bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One and sat before him to listen to the Dharma. The lord of the gods, Indra, recounted the previous story to the Blessed One and asked the Blessed One: Venerable One, what is the practice of the gods, humans, Asuras, Nagas, sky-goers, Gandharvas, and other beings with different forms? The Blessed One said.

The Blessed One declared: Kausika, the gods and humans, as well as the Asuras and Nagas, along with the Kumbhandas and Gandharvas, and other beings with different forms, their conduct is jealousy and stinginess. Although they do not think, 'Alas! May we abide in the absence of hatred, competition, harm, strife, fault-finding, contention, and dispute,' they actually abide in harboring hatred, competition, harm, strife, fault-finding, contention, and dispute. Indra reported: Venerable One, it is indeed so! It is indeed so! The gods and humans, as well as the Asuras and Nagas, along with the Kumbhandas and Gandharvas, and other beings with different forms, their conduct is jealousy and stinginess. Although they do not think, 'Alas! May we abide in the absence of hatred, competition, harm, strife, fault-finding, contention, and dispute,' they actually abide in harboring hatred, competition, harm, strife, fault-finding, contention, and dispute. Having understood the meaning spoken by the Blessed One, I have transcended hesitation and am free from doubt. Thereafter, Indra, the lord of the gods, having heard the teachings of the Blessed One, praised the words spoken by the Blessed One and rejoiced in his heart. He then asked the Blessed One: Venerable One, what is the root of jealousy and stinginess? What is their origin? What is their form? From what do they arise? If there is what, then jealousy and stinginess arise? If there is not what, then jealousy and stinginess do not arise? The Blessed One declared: Kausika, the root of jealousy and stinginess is joy and displeasure. Their origin is joy and displeasure. Their form is joy and displeasure.

Arising is joy and displeasure. If there is joy and displeasure, jealousy and miserliness will arise. If there is no joy and displeasure, jealousy and miserliness will not arise.
