Bestowed: You, due to past sins and unwholesome deeds, were born in the lowly realm of flesh-eaters, and even now you harm many beings. If you pass away from here, what will become of your destination? What will be your place of birth? Where will you go? They replied: What command does the Blessed One have for us? The Blessed One bestowed: From now on, cease from sinful deeds, take refuge, and uphold the precepts! The flesh-eaters entreated: As the Blessed One has commanded us, so shall we follow. Having thus entreated, the flesh-eaters took refuge and upheld the precepts, and from then on, they abandoned sinful deeds. Thereafter, the Blessed One taught them the Dharma that suited them, and then disappeared from the forest cave, and went to the Grove of Light. The flesh-eaters also abided in the supreme path, giving water to the decaying ones, and also giving food, and also showing the way to those who were lost. Thereafter, the people of Shivi and Kosala were amazed. The Blessed One has tamed these difficult to tame! Thus they praised. Then, the monks said to the Buddha, the Blessed One: Venerable Blessed One, you have also tamed these flesh-eaters, and granted them refuge and the upholding of the precepts, and also looked upon the medicine for many beings. The Blessed One bestowed: Not only now, but also in the past, I have turned them away from sinful deeds, and listen to how I placed them on the path of the ten virtuous actions. Monks, in the past, in a bygone era, in this region there was a great gathering of flesh-eaters, and because they lived here, they made the people of Shivi and Kosala uneasy. In the city of Rajagriha, in a place of asceticism, there lived a hermit, and many beings, in order to tame those flesh-eaters, entreated that hermit, and the hermit tamed those flesh-eaters, and placed them on the path of the ten virtuous actions. Monks, what do you think? The hermit at that time was the embodiment of a Bodhisattva.

Whoever abides in such conduct, that is me. Those who became flesh-eaters at that time were none other than these flesh-eaters. At that time, I also subdued these and placed them on the path of the ten virtuous actions. Even now, I am turning these away from sinful actions and placing them on the path of the ten virtuous actions. The Hundred Deeds, Volume Thirty-Three, called "The Head of Power": The basis of the story is that he was residing in Rajagriha. At that time, in the vast city, there lived a teacher of archery named Power's Head, who had mastered all the arts of archery. He taught the art of archery to five hundred Licchavis, and they also became proficient in it and became very powerful. Then, one day, the people of Rajagriha and the people of the vast city quarreled. The people of Rajagriha equipped the four divisions of the army and led them against the people of the vast city for battle. Then the archery teacher Power's Head heard that the people of Rajagriha had led an army against us for battle. Having heard this, he also set out with five hundred followers to fight and led them against the army of Rajagriha. After they had led them, many people were defeated. Then the soldiers of Rajagriha fled. In this way, two, three, and up to five times, many people of Rajagriha were defeated. Then the archery teacher Power's Head shot and killed five thousand people, and this was heard everywhere. Then one day, the people of Rajagriha pleaded with the Blessed One, "Venerable Power's Head is our enemy among enemies, our opponent among opponents. That venerable one has defeated about five thousand people. For the sake of the Blessed One's compassion, please subdue Power's Head." Then the Blessed One did not say anything to the people of Rajagriha, and so he granted it. Then the people of Rajagriha knew that the Blessed One had granted it by not saying anything, and they departed from the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One disappeared from Rajagriha.

Then (he) became like that. After going to Vaisali, the Blessed One blessed (him) in such a way that the Indian Brahmin could no longer know (his) lineage, so he became ignorant, thinking: Why have I become so unworthy? Then, he heard that the Blessed One had gone from Rajgir to Vaisali, and he thought: The Blessed One is all-knowing and all-seeing, why does he not know the knowledge of my lineage? So he went to where the Blessed One was, prostrated himself at the feet of the Blessed One, and sat before him to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Blessed One understood his thoughts, habits, faculties, consciousness, and nature, and taught him the corresponding Dharma. Therefore, the Indian Brahmin, while sitting on that seat, destroyed the twenty high peaks of the mountain of the view of the perishable aggregates with the vajra of wisdom, and attained the fruit of stream-entry. He saw the truth, stood up from his seat, draped his robe over one shoulder, folded his palms towards the direction where the Blessed One was, and said to the Blessed One: Venerable, if I can be ordained in the well-spoken Dharma Vinaya, receive full ordination, and obtain the status of a Bhikshu, I would also like to practice Brahmacharya in the presence of the Blessed One. The Blessed One said: Indian Brahmin, first teach the Dharma to the disciples for a while, and then it will be easy for you to be ordained, receive full ordination, and become a Bhikshu. He said: As the Blessed One has said, I am willing to comply. Having said this, he left the presence of the Blessed One and went to Vaisali, where he taught such a Dharma to the five hundred Licchavis that they all wanted to be ordained. Then, they asked their parents and, together with the Indian Brahmin, went to where the Blessed One was, prostrated themselves at the feet of the Blessed One, and sat before him to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Blessed One understood their thoughts, habits,
