They went to where the Blessed One was, and when they arrived, they bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One and sat before him to listen to the Dharma. Then the Blessed One, knowing their thoughts, habits, faculties, wisdom, and nature, taught them the Dharma accordingly. Therefore, those hunters, while sitting on their seats, realized the fruit of entering the stream. Having seen the truth, they requested: 'Venerable one, if it is permissible for us to be ordained in the well-spoken Dharma and Discipline and to obtain the status of a monk, then we also wish to practice the pure conduct in the presence of the Blessed One.' Then the Blessed One ordained them with the words 'Come, monks,' and made them fully ordained, and also gave them predictions. They also abandoned all defilements through diligence, practice, and effort, and realized the state of Arhat. Those deer also, with joyful minds towards the Blessed One, died and were reborn in the heavens. As soon as a son of the gods or a daughter of the gods is born, by nature three thoughts arise: 'From where did I die? Where was I born? By what karma was I born?' Then they saw those who had died from the animal realm, were born in the heavens, and had become joyful towards the Blessed One. Then they thought: 'It is not our part to go to see the Blessed One only after waiting until tomorrow. We should go to see the Blessed One before tomorrow comes.' Then the sons of the gods, who were formerly deer, adorned with earrings and armlets, wearing necklaces around their necks, adorned with belts and garlands on their bodies, wearing crowns adorned with various precious jewels, their bodies anointed with saffron, tamala leaves, cloud incense, and other fragrances, on that very night filled vessels with celestial utpala flowers, lotuses, water lilies, white lotuses, and mandara flowers, illuminating the entire Jeta Grove with great light, scattering flowers upon the Blessed One, bowing their heads at the feet of the Blessed One, in order to listen to the Dharma.

Then, the Blessed One came into their presence. Then, the Blessed One taught them the Dharma that was in accordance with them. Having heard the Dharma, they realized the truth. Having realized the truth, they returned to their own abodes. Then, the monks saw that the entire grove of Prince Jeta was pervaded by great light. They asked the Blessed One, "Blessed One, what is this? Is it Brahma, the lord of the Saha world, or Indra, the lord of the gods, or the four guardians of the world, or some other son of the gods with great magical powers and great strength who has come to see the Blessed One?" The Blessed One replied, "Monks, it is not Brahma, the lord of the Saha world, nor Indra, the lord of the gods, nor the four guardians of the world, nor some other son of the gods with great magical powers and great strength who has come to see me. Monks, in the empty places of the forest, did you see five hundred deer shot and killed by hunters?" They replied, "Venerable one, we saw them." The Blessed One said, "Having died and passed away while their minds were pleased with me, they were born into the realm of the gods. Having become gods, they came to me. I taught them the Dharma. Having heard the Dharma from me, they saw the truths. Having seen the truths, they went to their own abodes." Then the monks asked the Blessed One, "Venerable one, what deeds did those hunters do that they were born into the caste of outcasts as a result of the ripening of those deeds? What deeds did those deer do that they were born as deer as a result of the ripening of those deeds? And these deer were pleased with the Blessed One, and were not displeased." The Blessed One replied, "In the teachings of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Kashyapa, all of these people went forth and became quarrelsome and unskilled monks. There, they spoke the word 'outcast' to the monks. Some spoke the word 'animal.' Those who spoke the word 'animal' were born as animals. Those who spoke the word 'outcast' were born as outcasts. They spent one lifetime there.

Having practiced pure conduct in this way, and having fully matured the faculties, one is now liberated. The story called "Topknot" is as follows: The Blessed One, together with a great Sangha of one thousand two hundred and fifty monks, five hundred merchants, and five hundred beggars, were traveling together. Once, while they were clearing a path in a forest, as the Blessed One was about to depart, a great fire blazed up in a place within that forest. This caused many people to become frightened and terrified, thinking, "We are finished! We have no chance to survive!" Then, the Blessed One saw that many people were frightened and terrified. Having seen this, he went in front of those travelers and spoke in verses: Whatever is the power of all Buddhas, Whatever is the power of all Arhats, By the glory of the Buddha Jewel, Fire, you clear the path for me! Whatever is the power of all Buddhas, Whatever is the power of all Arhats, By the glory of the Dharma Jewel, Fire, you clear the path for me! Whatever is the power of all Buddhas, Whatever is the power of all Arhats, By the glory of the Sangha Jewel, Fire, you clear the path for me! As soon as the Blessed One spoke these words, the fire subsided. Those merchants became very pleased with the Blessed One. Having become pleased, they sat before the Blessed One in order to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Blessed One taught them the Dharma that was appropriate for them. After that, some of them generated warmth. Some generated the crown, the forbearance that accords with truth, the supreme worldly Dharma, and the samadhi of seeing. Some realized the fruit of stream-entry. Some realized the fruit of once-returning. Some realized the fruit of non-returning. Some, having ordained, realized the state of Arhatship. Some planted the seed to become a Chakravartin king. And some...
