Having spoken thus, that hermit brought that householder back, leading him to his own dwelling. That hermit taught his sons the Dharma that was in accordance with this. Therefore, those sons invited their father back into the house and placed him as before. Then, that householder, in order to repay the previous kindness, gave food to that hermit in his house and went forth in his presence. Having gone forth, he developed the four concentrations and the five superknowledges. Monks, what do you think? The one who became a hermit at that time, who abided in the conduct of a Bodhisattva, was myself. The one who became a householder at that time was this Brahmin alone. Those who became sons were these sons alone. At that time also, this one had become old and infirm, and having been driven out of the house, I, with skillful means, placed him in his former abode and caused him to abide in the four concentrations and the five superknowledges. Now also, this one has become old and infirm, and having been driven out of the house, I, with skillful means, placed him in his former abode and placed him in the attainment of the ultimate eternity and the bliss of Nirvana. Furthermore, this one also went forth in the teachings of the perfectly complete Buddha Kashyapa, and having practiced celibacy there for one lifetime, having fully matured the faculties, therefore, he has now become completely liberated. The one called Ri: The basis of the story is that he was residing in Shravasti. At that time, there was a householder living in Shravasti who, due to circumstances, took a wife. He played and rejoiced with her, living happily and contentedly. Later, his wife became pregnant, and after nine or ten months, she gave birth to a boy who was handsome, pleasing to look at, and beautiful. Having named him in accordance with the family tradition, he was raised and nurtured with milk, yogurt, butter, ghee, and the essence of butter. When he grew up, he learned writing, mental arithmetic, storytelling, manual calculation, extraction, hiding, distribution, examining clothes, examining jewels, examining precious stones, examining incense, and medicine.

He was trained in observation, elephant observation, horse observation, and weapon observation. He became proficient in writing, proficient in reading, intelligent, clear in his actions, open-minded, and skilled in eight types of observation. Then one day, his father sent him among his friends. Those friends all held different views and desires, speaking in ways that were mutually incompatible, and they only praised what they liked. That householder's son was naturally intelligent, and when he inquired about everyone's principles, asking what this one said and what that one said, he did not like those views, did not tolerate them, and did not consider them acceptable. Then one day, a lay practitioner praised the Buddha in a way that was exactly as it should be. As soon as he heard that, the householder's son asked, 'This sound called 'Buddha,' if it has not occurred before, then who is this 'Buddha'?' Then that lay practitioner spoke praises of the Buddha that were in accordance with that. Then the householder's son desired to see the Blessed One. Then he abandoned everything and went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and sat before him in order to listen to the Dharma. Then the Blessed One taught him the Dharma that was in accordance with him. Having heard that, the householder's son became delighted in his heart towards the Blessed One. Then, the householder's son, knowing that the Blessed One's words were finished, praised and rejoiced in what the Blessed One had said, bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, and then departed from the Blessed One. Then one day, he developed the mind of giving, but seeing that he had nothing in his house, he thought, 'I should go into the great ocean, and if I could succeed in going to the Jewel Island just once, then I could easily give alms and also make merit.' So, together with about five hundred merchants, he took goods and went into the great ocean, and he succeeded in reaching the Jewel Island, and then returned to Jamb
