Then the Blessed One said to the Venerable Ananda: Ananda, go to the Brahmin's dwelling in Prince Jeta's Grove, and you too sit beside him, and whatever he asks you, you should answer him. Furthermore, instruct the monks: Monks, I have taught you to abide by concealing virtues and confessing sins. However, out of compassion for this Brahmin, whoever has attained whatever kind of miraculous power, let him display such a miraculous power. The Venerable Ananda replied: Venerable One, as you say. Then the Venerable Ananda instructed the monks: Gentlemen, there is a Brahmin dwelling in this Prince Jeta's Grove, go near his dwelling. Then, as he was dwelling there, the monks began to display various miraculous transformations. Then the Brahmin saw it and asked the Venerable Ananda: Venerable Ananda, who are these who have such great miraculous powers and such great strength? What kind of people are they? The Venerable Ananda said: They are the hearers of the Blessed One. Then the Brahmin thought: If the disciples are so complete and endowed, what need is there to mention the ascetic Gautama? What kind of person would he be? Then the Blessed One generated a worldly thought: Alas, it would be good if the four great kings came to see me in the evening. It would be good if Indra, the lord of the gods, came to see me at midnight. It would be good if Brahma, the lord of the Saha world, came to see me at dawn. Thus, as soon as the Blessed One generated the thought, the four great kings, Indra, the lord of the gods, and Brahma, the lord of the Saha world, came to see the Blessed One. Then the Brahmin saw it and asked the Venerable Ananda: Venerable Ananda, who are these who are so extraordinary? The Venerable Ananda said: These are the four great kings, Indra, the lord of the gods, and the lord of the Saha world.

He had come to see the Blessed One. Then, as soon as he heard this, the Brahmin became very happy with the Blessed One, (thinking) that even a human being could attain such a state! Alas, may I also become a Buddha and appear in the world! Then he thought, such a state cannot be achieved merely by wishing for it. I should give alms and accumulate merit, and pray to attain the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. The next morning, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and set out for Shravasti. The householder Anathapindika also went to Prince Jeta's Grove with five hundred attendants. The householder Anathapindika saw the Brahmin from afar. Seeing him, he said to the Brahmin: Brahmin, have you seen any rare and wonderful things in Prince Jeta's Grove? Then, the Brahmin told the householder Anathapindika everything. Then, the householder Anathapindika said to the Brahmin: Brahmin, since you have seen such rare and wonderful things, what do you desire? The Brahmin said: I desire the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Householder, however, such a state cannot be achieved merely by wishing for it, so I wish to beg for alms and give alms, and accumulate merit. Then, as soon as he heard this, the householder Anathapindika immediately gave the Brahmin a large pile of wealth. The Brahmin also invited the Sangha of monks, headed by the Buddha, for three months, and prepared all the necessary items in Prince Jeta's Grove. For three months, he served and honored the Sangha of monks, headed by the Buddha, with all the necessary items. On the last day, he satisfied the Sangha of monks, headed by the Buddha, with a hundred flavors of food, and offered the Blessed One a robe worth a hundred thousand. He also offered each of the other monks a pair of cloths, and prayed to attain the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment.

By this root of virtue, may I become the guide of the blind in the world, without a teacher, may I become the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Well-Gone, Knower of the World, Guide of beings to be tamed, Supreme, Teacher of gods and humans, Buddha, the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One said to that Brahmin: Brahmin, well done, well done! Brahmin, in the future, when there is no guide for the blind in the world, no teacher, you will become the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Well-Gone, Knower of the World, Guide of beings to be tamed, Supreme, Teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One, named "Free from Sorrow." The story of "The Weak One" originated when the Buddha was residing in Jeta's Grove in Shravasti. The householder Anathapindika had seven sons, and he named them according to their lineage. He raised them with milk, yogurt, butter, ghee, and the essence of ghee, and they grew up strong like lotuses in a lake. Then one day, the householder Anathapindika thought: "I should place these children among friends. I should place them among those who have faith, and I should not place them among those who do not have faith. If I place them among those who do not have faith, they may also be influenced by their teachings and not look to the teachings of the Buddha." So he placed them among the friends of Buddhists. Those friends who did not have faith were attached to dancing, wandering around towns, and prostitutes. The sons of the householder Anathapindika, however, were with the friends of lay practitioners, especially devoted to the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and were fond of observing vows and listening to the Dharma. In Shravasti, there lived a poor Brahmin boy who was struggling to make a living. He thought: "I should join a group of friends and rely on them to seek a livelihood." So he entered the group of friends of lay practitioners.
