What was seen. After seeing, that monk thought, "My wife has been seen." He thus generated even greater anger. He ordered the attendants to whip that Pratyekabuddha severely and then drive him away. Then, that Pratyekabuddha thought, "The afflictions have been rebuked and diminished. It is not right for me to wander around like this forever. I should make a sign." Thinking thus, he rose into the sky and displayed miracles such as burning, walking, raining, and lightning. Those ordinary people quickly developed faith through the miracles. As soon as they saw him, they became very happy. After becoming happy, they prostrated at his feet as if cutting down a tree with a saw, and said, "O possessor of great fortune, please descend! Please rescue me from this mire of evil deeds!" Then, that Pratyekabuddha, out of compassion for him, descended to the ground. That person prostrated at his feet, asked for forgiveness, and provided him with all necessities for as long as he lived. In that garden, he built a hut of branches and leaves and served him with all necessities. Later, one day, that Pratyekabuddha thought, "What need do I have for this body bound by the physical form? I should enter the realm of peaceful Nirvana." Thinking thus, he displayed miracles such as burning, walking, raining, and lightning, and then completely entered Nirvana. Afterward, that king made offerings to the relics of that Pratyekabuddha, built a stupa for the relics, and made great offerings to that stupa. Then he made the aspiration, "Alas! I have harmed such a pure being in this way. May I not experience the result of this action. By this root of virtue that I have again honored and offered, may I be born, wherever I may be born, into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family. May I please a teacher who is even more extraordinary than this, and may I not displease him. May I ordain in his teachings alone, abandon all afflictions, and realize the state of Arhat."

did. Monks, what do you think? The king who was then called Brahma-given was none other than this Sarana. Because he had harmed the solitary Buddha there, the maturation of that karma caused him to be whipped wherever he was born, and he died under the whip. This person has pleased me in a way that far surpasses hundreds of thousands of billions of solitary Buddhas, has not displeased me, and has renounced all defilements by ordaining in my own doctrine, and has realized the state of Arhat. Furthermore, this person also ordained in the teachings of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light-protector, and practiced celibacy there for one lifetime, fully maturing his faculties, and therefore, he has now attained complete liberation. The one called the deer ascetic: The story takes place in Rajagriha. At that time, in the region of Videha, there were about five hundred deer ascetics who wore deer skins, wore antlers, and ate grass and drank water together with the deer. The Blessed One Buddha is the teacher of the one and only path, possessing mastery over the two kinds of knowledge and wisdom, skilled in the three unmixed mindfulnesses, liberated from the five realms of existence by the four fearlessnesses, skilled in the six sense bases, practicing the seven branches of enlightenment, meditating on the eight liberations, entering into the nine progressive states of meditative absorption, possessing the ten powers, and proclaiming the great roar of the true lion. By nature, three times during the day and three times during the night, that is, six times day and night, he looks at the world with the eye of a Buddha: Who is declining? Who is prospering? Who is poor? Who is afraid? Who is associated with harm? Who is associated with poverty, fear, and harm? Who is inclined towards the lower realms? Who is falling into the lower realms? Who has fallen into the lower realms? Who will I rescue from the lower realms and place in the heavens, liberation, and fruition? Who will be pulled out of the mire of evil deeds? Who will be empowered with the seven noble riches from the lack of the seven noble riches?

I shall cause them to enter into prosperity. I shall cause those who have not generated roots of virtue to generate them. I shall cause those who have already generated roots of virtue to fully ripen. I shall cause those who have fully ripened roots of virtue to be pierced by the sword of wisdom. Upon whom shall I make a world adorned with the appearance of the Buddhas, together with its fruits? Thus, the vision of wisdom enters. The ocean is the abode of aquatic creatures. Even if the tides of time may pass, for the sons to be tamed, the Buddha never misses the time. Then, the Blessed One thought, 'The time has come to tame the five hundred ascetics who dwell with deer.' The Blessed One thought, 'How can those ascetics who dwell with deer see those deer going to Rajagriha?' Having seen them, they too will go to Rajagriha together with those deer. Thus, he blessed them. Then, having gone there, the Blessed One made those deer that were emanations disappear. Then, those many ordinary people, having seen them, began to revile them. Having reviled them in this way, they came out of Rajagriha and went to the side of the Grove of Light. Then, the Blessed One, out of compassion for them, sat down in front of them. Then, those five hundred ascetics who dwell with deer saw the Blessed One from afar. Having seen him, they became delighted with the Blessed One. Having become delighted, they went to where the Blessed One was staying, bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One, and sat down before him in order to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Blessed One, having understood their thoughts, predispositions, elements, consciousness, and nature, taught them the Dharma that was in accordance with them. Thus, those five hundred ascetics who dwell with deer, while sitting on that very seat, in the moment of realizing the truth, directly realized the fruit of non-return. Having seen the truth, they said to the Blessed One, 'Venerable one, we wish to go forth and be fully ordained in the well-spoken Dharma discipline, and to obtain the state of a bhikshu.'
