P. Monks, that son of a good family will not remain in the household for long. He will also go forth into my teachings, abandon all defilements, and realize the state of an Arhat. Thus spoke the Blessed One. Then, one day, the Blessed One saw that the time had come to tame the black elephant dweller. In the early morning, he put on his lower garment and robes, and carrying his bowl, he went to Rajagriha for alms. After gradually taking alms in Rajagriha, he went to the house where the black elephant dweller was staying, and stood at the door of the house. To guide him, the Blessed One emitted rays of light, which made his entire house appear like the color of molten gold. Then, the black elephant dweller thought: Whose light is this? It must be the Blessed One's. Where is the Blessed One? He must be here, thinking of me. At that moment, a messenger came and told the black elephant dweller: The Blessed One is at the door. Then, with reverence, he went to where the Blessed One was, bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, and with his palms joined together respectfully, he asked the Blessed One: What does the Blessed One command? The Blessed One said: Abandon the house where you live, come to me, and go forth in my presence. Thus, the Blessed One, in other lifetimes, had never broken any words of those who were like a lama and the place of a lama, so no one could break the words of the Blessed One. Then he said: As the Blessed One commands, I will do. Having said this, he followed the Blessed One. The Blessed One led him to the Light Garden, ordained him, gave him the Bhikshu vows, and prophesied for him. He also abandoned all defilements through diligence, practice, and effort, and realized the state of an Arhat. Then, the monks asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: Venerable, what deeds did the black elephant dweller commit, that with the ripening of that karma,

Having done so. Please do not be displeased. I have renounced in the teachings of the Blessed One, abandoned all defilements, and personally realized the state of an Arhat. The Blessed One declared: "It is due to the power of aspiration." He asked: "Where did this monk make his aspiration?" The Blessed One declared: "Monks, in the past, in a secluded village, there lived a householder named Black, who was rich, possessed much wealth, enjoyed great abundance, was fully in control, vast and extensive, equal to the wealth of Vaishravana (Namtösé, རྣམ་ཐོས་ཀྱི་བུ།), and rivaling the wealth of Vaishravana. Later, one spring, he went to a garden where the trees were thick with branches and the flowers were blooming. At a time when Buddhas do not appear in the world, solitary Buddhas (Pratyekabuddhas), full of compassion for the poor and afflicted, reside in remote dwellings, and are the sole objects of offerings in the world, appear in the world. A solitary Buddha, wishing to go for alms in that secluded place, heard the sound of music coming from that garden. He thought: 'Why should I go to a secluded place for this hard-to-fill belly? I should go into this garden, and from here I will receive my alms.' So, that solitary Buddha went to that garden, and the householder saw him, beautiful in body and beautiful in mind. Having seen him, the householder became very pleased with that solitary Buddha. Having become pleased, he offered food and said: 'Noble one, where do you reside? I will provide you with service.' The solitary Buddha said: 'I live in such and such a forest.' Having said this, that solitary Buddha left. After that, the householder often went to that forest to offer food and provide service. Later, one day, the householder went to see him, and that solitary Buddha had settled under a tree, sitting in full lotus posture, like a Naga king coiling his body and sleeping. Then, the householder saw that solitary Buddha dwelling in great solitude, and a thought arose in his mind that he also wanted him to renounce. After that, he went towards that solitary Buddha.

Then, he bowed at his feet with his head and said: "Noble one, please ordain me, and I also wish to practice pure conduct in your presence." The Pratyekabuddha said: "I do not ordain. Only the righteous ones ordain, go among the righteous ones and be ordained." Then, as soon as he heard this, that householder abandoned his household retinue, gave alms, performed meritorious deeds, and was ordained among the righteous ones. He was ordained there, and he developed the four dhyanas and the five superknowledges. After he was ordained, that Pratyekabuddha passed into complete nirvana. Then, that righteous one had the thought: "I should go and attend upon that excellent object of veneration, the virtuous friend." However, he thought, "I will realize a superior distinction from him." Thinking this, he went to that forest. There, he did not see that Pratyekabuddha, but he saw another Pratyekabuddha in that forest. He asked him: "Noble one, where has a monk of such form and color, who used to live in this forest, gone?" The Pratyekabuddha said: "He has passed into complete nirvana." He said: "Where did he pass into nirvana?" Then that Pratyekabuddha showed him those relics. Then he built a stupa for his relics and honored it with incense, flour, perfume, and flowers, and made the aspiration: "Alas, by this root of virtue, wherever I may be born, may I be born into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family. May I please a teacher who is even more excellent than this, and may I not displease him. May I also attain such qualities."
