In the past, in a bygone era, there were seven kings in the central region, each ruling as king in their own land. However, they were not in harmony with each other, and from time to time, they caused many people to perish. Then, one day, King Brahma-given of the Kashi country had a thought: 'By what means should I reconcile all these kings under the sun?' At that time, in the land of King Brahma-given of Kashi, in a place of ascetic practice, there lived a hermit endowed with five kinds of clairvoyance, possessing great magical powers and strength. Then, King Brahma-given thought: 'If I entrust this hermit, he will be able to reconcile them.' Thinking this, he went to where the hermit was staying, prostrated at his feet, and said: 'These six kings under the sun are all not in harmony with each other, and from time to time, they cause many people to perish. Therefore, you should reconcile them all.' Having said this, he left. Then, the hermit did not say anything to King Brahma-given of Kashi, thus giving his consent. Then, King Brahma-given of Kashi, knowing that the hermit had given his consent by not speaking, prostrated at his feet and left. Then, one day, the six kings gathered an army with four divisions and arrived in the land of Varanasi. They surrounded the entire city with an army of four divisions and encamped there. Then, King Brahma-given of Kashi summoned the hermit. As soon as he heard this, the hermit immediately rose into the sky from that very place and went to where the six kings were encamped. Then, as soon as they saw him, the six kings of royal lineage became very happy with the hermit. Having become happy, they went to where the hermit was, prostrated at his feet, and sat before him to listen to the Dharma. Then, the hermit taught them the Dharma and made them all reconcile. After they had reconciled, they developed a mind of wanting to become fully ordained in the presence of that very hermit. Then, they bid farewell to each other and returned to their respective countries, installed their own sons as kings, and gave alms and accumulated merit.

Sa, they went forth to that very ascetic. Having gone forth there, they developed the four concentrations and the five superknowledges. Monks, what do you think? At that time, the one who was the ascetic, abiding in the conduct of a bodhisattva, was myself. At that time, those six kings who were in discord with each other were none other than these six brothers who are now speaking discordantly with each other. At that time, the one who was the king named Brahma-given was none other than this youngest brother. At that time, that ascetic also reconciled those who were in discord with each other, and they also went forth, developing the four concentrations and the five superknowledges. Even now, he has made these six brothers, who speak discordantly with each other, agree on one view. And they have also gone forth, abandoning all defilements, and have directly realized the state of an arhat. Then the monks asked the Blessed One Buddha, "Venerable one, what deeds has this householder, with his sons and retinue of servants, done that, as a result of those deeds, he was born into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family, and that the Blessed One was pleased with them, and they did not displease him, and that his seven sons also went forth, abandoning all defilements, and directly realized the state of an arhat?" The Blessed One replied, "It is due to the power of aspiration." They asked, "Blessed One, where did they make these aspirations?" He replied, "Monks, in the past, in a bygone age, in this very Fortunate Aeon, when the life expectancy of beings was twenty thousand years, there appeared in the world a fully enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, a Sugata, a knower of the world, a tamer of beings, unsurpassed, a teacher of gods and humans, the Blessed One Buddha named Light-Store. At that time, in Varanasi, there lived a householder whose six sons were speaking discordantly with each other. The youngest son of that householder was fond of the Buddha, and he brought all his elder brothers into the teaching of the fully enlightened Buddha Light-Store. All of them

Having prayed, they went forth into the teachings of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Kāśyapa. There, they practiced celibacy for one lifetime, and at the time of death, they made the aspiration: 'May we please the Buddha, the Blessed One, who is the Buddha prophesied by the perfectly enlightened Buddha Kāśyapa to be the brahmin youth, and may we not displease him. Having gone forth into his teachings, having abandoned all defilements, may we realize the state of an arhat.' That householder also gave alms and accumulated merit. Having taken refuge and kept the precepts for one lifetime, at the time of death, he made the aspiration: 'By this root of virtue, wherever I may be born, may I be born into a wealthy, rich, and affluent family. At that time, may these seven sons also become my sons. May I please the Buddha, the Blessed One, who is the Buddha prophesied by the perfectly enlightened Buddha Kāśyapa to be the brahmin youth, and may I not displease him.' Monks, what do you think? The householder who was there at that time is none other than this householder. Having given alms and accumulated merit there, having kept the refuge and the precepts, by the ripening of the karma of the aspiration made at the time of death, wherever he was born, he was born into a wealthy, rich, and affluent family. He pleased me and did not displease me, and these also became his sons. These sons also practiced celibacy for one lifetime, and at the time of death, they made the aspiration. Therefore, monks, I have attained the same as the perfectly enlightened Buddha Kāśyapa, the same power, the same deeds, and the same means. These have pleased me and have not displeased me, and having gone forth into my teachings, having abandoned all defilements, they have realized the state of an arhat. The one called Kāśyapa resided in Rājagṛha. Then one day, the venerable Kāśyapa
