became the Destroyer himself, and may I also completely pass into Nirvana before the Teacher enters his final sleep.' What do you think, monks? The deity at that time was none other than this Bhadraka. Because he made that aspiration there, monks, I attained perfect and complete enlightenment, being completely the same as the destroyer of Samsara, the same in power, the same in action, the same in method, and he pleased me and did not displease me. He renounced in my own doctrine, abandoned all defilements, manifested the Destroyer himself, and when I entered my final sleep, he passed into complete Nirvana before me, and then I passed into complete Nirvana. Then the monks pleaded with the Buddha, the Bhagavan: 'Venerable Bhagavan, when you were experiencing the pain of death, the venerable Bhadraka became your refuge, please look at him abiding in the ultimate of eternity, the accomplishment and the bliss of Nirvana.' The Bhagavan said: 'It is not only now, but also in the past, when he was experiencing the pain of death, listen to how he rescued him from the place of fear and placed him in the place of no fear. Monks, in the past, in the past age, in the city of Varanasi (Varanasi, an ancient Indian city, now Benares) there was a king named Brahma-datta ruling. King Brahma-datta had a horse named Succhitta, which was the best. By its power, King Brahma-datta levied taxes on all the kings under the sun. Later, that horse Succhitta died, and the news spread everywhere, and people gossiped that King Brahma-datta's horse Succhitta had died. Hearing this, all the kings under the sun thought: 'Whatever taxes he levied on us were entirely due to that horse Succhitta. Now that it is dead, if we happen to meet him outside, we can treat him as we please.' So they were all looking for an opportunity. King Brahma-datta also heard the news that the kings under the sun were looking for an opportunity.

As soon as they heard this, they were so afraid that they could not bear to come out of the city. Then one day, some merchants came from the north, driving horses as merchandise, and arrived at Vārāṇasī. Then, King Brahmadatta heard that some merchants had come from the north, driving horses as merchandise, and as soon as he heard it, the king sent some people who were skilled in judging horses, and ordered them, "You must buy all the horses that have been driven here today as merchandise. In particular, see if there are any divine horses among them." Then, the attendants of King Brahmadatta replied, "We will do as the gods command." So they bought all the horses, and when they looked at them, the best horse among them turned out to be a divine horse, and they reported it to the king. Then, as soon as he heard this, the king was very pleased and gave a lot of gold and silver to those horse merchants. Then one day, he rode the divine horse to the garden, and the other kings heard that King Brahmadatta had come to the garden. After hearing this, they also prepared the four divisions of their armies and arrived at Vārāṇasī, surrounding the garden. Then, King Brahmadatta became helpless, thinking, "What should I do now?" So he abandoned everything, thinking of riding the divine horse out of the garden, but when he looked, the entire garden was surrounded by the enemy's army. The divine horse would naturally protect the king's life. The garden was separated by the city's moat, and the city's moat was deep and full of lotus flowers. Then, the divine horse thought, "I cannot escape by myself." So it stepped on the lotus petals and went towards the city. Then, the other kings saw it and pierced the divine horse's abdomen with arrows, spears, and fishhooks. Then, the king also saw it and was frightened and afraid, thinking, "If this horse dies in this water, it will surely bring bad consequences to me."

Then, knowing that the king was frightened, the horse Changshe spoke in verse to comfort the king's heart: 'Thus, on the battlefield, my body, though pierced by arrows, you should see. Only after being rescued will I perish. King, do not be afraid!' After saying this, the horse Changshe escorted the king into the city, placed him in a place of safety, and then died. Monks, what do you think? The one who was the horse Changshe at that time, who dwelt in the conduct of a Bodhisattva, was none other than myself. The one who was the king at that time was none other than this Rabzang. At that time, when I was afflicted by the disease of death, he rescued me from this place full of fear and placed me in a place of safety. Now also, when I am afflicted by the disease of death, he rescues me from this cycle of existence full of fear and places me in the ultimate Yungdrung state of accomplishment and the blissful state of Nirvana. Furthermore, when I am afflicted by the disease of death, he rescues me from this place full of fear and places me in a place of safety. Monks, in the past, in a past age, in a city called Kanyakubja, there was a king named Karna, and that king was very fond of chasing after prey. Then one day, he fully armed led the four divisions of his army to chase after prey. On the bank of a river, there were five hundred deer gathered together in a herd, and the king ordered the four divisions of his army to surround them, making sure that not a single deer escaped. Then, the leader of the deer herd thought: 'Since I am the leader of this herd of deer, I must think of their accomplishment and happiness.' So he looked around, thinking: 'In which direction should I lead the deer so that they can escape?' He saw that the four divisions of the army had surrounded them without any gaps, except for the bank of the raging river, where no one was present. Then, the Bodhisattva thought: 'These deer cannot cross, jump, or escape this river. Instead, I myself will stand firm in the middle of this river.'
