Rabdag thought: Are there no other kings of the Gandharvas? I should subdue him, thinking thus, he said: Call him in, and I will show what I can do. Having said this, they called him in and began to play the lute. Then, in order to subdue him, the Blessed One cut one string of the lute, and the Gandharva king Rabdag, seeing this, also cut one string. Then, the Blessed One gradually cut all the strings, and only one string remained, but still all sounds came from it. Then, Rabdag also cut all the strings, and he also made all sounds come from that one remaining string. Then, the Blessed One cut that one remaining string as well, and still made all sounds come forth. Then, the Gandharva king Rabdag thought: I cannot show even the slightest ability beyond that, this one is far more superior than me. Then, at that time, the Blessed One thought: This one is arrogant, thinking that there is no one equal to him, and that such an attachment should cease. The Blessed One broke his arrogance and transformed him into the body of self-nature. Then, he saw the Blessed One and felt great joy, and became joyful. He prostrated at the feet of the Blessed One and sat before him to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Blessed One understood his thoughts, predispositions, faculties, consciousness, and nature, and taught him the Dharma that suited him. Therefore, the Gandharva king Rabdag, while sitting on that very seat, destroyed the twenty high peaks of the mountain of the view of the aggregates with the vajra of wisdom, and realized the fruit of entering the stream. Then, the Blessed One disappeared from among the gods of the Thirty-Three. At that time, the flowers of that Udumbara grove had withered. The wandering Rabzang saw that the flowers of that Udumbara grove had withered. Having seen this, he felt great sorrow and thought: By my merit, this Udumbara grove was once full of all kinds of flowers, but now I am old and decrepit.

After encountering this, when he reached the age of one hundred and twenty, the flowers of the Udumbara grove began to wither. Thinking, 'I will die before long,' he became very sad and uttered cries of suffering. Then, a joyful deity spoke to Raba Zang, saying: 'This Udumbara grove is not blooming in all its glory because of your merit. This place is the pleasure garden of a Chakravartin king. When a Chakravartin king appears, or when a Bodhisattva is about to appear, the flowers in this Udumbara grove will bloom. When a Chakravartin king ascends the throne, or when a Bodhisattva attains unsurpassed wisdom, this Udumbara grove will bloom in all its glory. When a Chakravartin king is near death, or when a Tathagata is about to enter Parinirvana, the flowers of this Udumbara grove will wither. When a Chakravartin king dies, or when a Tathagata enters Parinirvana, the flowers of this Udumbara grove will dry up. Now, the Tathagata has appeared in the world and is lying on his final bed. Tonight, at midnight, he will enter Parinirvana into the realm of Nirvana without residue. Therefore, the Udumbara grove has withered, so do not be too sad about it, do not suffer, do not lament.' Then, the wanderer Raba Zang thought: 'I still have doubts about the Dharma, and I also have hopes. The Bhagavan Gautama can also dispel my doubts. I should go to where the Bhagavan Gautama is, and after arriving there, if he allows me to request instruction, I will ask some questions.' Then, he disappeared from the Udumbara grove and went to the grove of twin Sala trees near the city of Kushinagar. At that time,

The Venerable Ānanda was walking back and forth in the walkway in front of the gate of Anathapindika's Park (Jetavana). Then the wanderer Rava saw the Venerable Ānanda from afar. Having seen him, he went to where the Venerable Ānanda was, and having arrived, he said this to the Venerable Ānanda: Venerable Ānanda, I have heard that the Blessed One Gautama will this night at midnight completely pass into the element of nirvana without remainder. I have doubts about the teachings, and I also have expectations. If the Blessed One Gautama could dispel my doubts, if the Venerable Ānanda you are not weary, please go to where the Blessed One Gautama is staying. Having gone there, if permission is granted to ask questions and give answers, I would like to ask some questions. The Venerable Ānanda was also skilled in observing signs. He thought, the Blessed One has left an emanation and has gone somewhere by the power of taming. Knowing this, he said to the wanderer Rava: Rava, enough. The Blessed One is unwell, the Sugata is unwell. Do not disturb the Tathagata. Then the wanderer Rava said this to the Venerable Ānanda: Venerable Ānanda, I have heard from the wanderers of old who were aged and infirm that the Tathagatas, the Arhats, the perfectly enlightened Buddhas, appear in the world very rarely, like the flower of the Udumbara tree. The Blessed One Gautama will also this night at midnight completely pass into the element of nirvana without remainder. Then, for the third time, the Venerable Ānanda said to the wanderer Rava: Rava, enough. The Blessed One
