Dam. Does the powerful one reside in Rajagriha? Does he like to see the teacher? Does he like to listen to the Dharma? The monk said: Venerable Shariputra, the son of the Brahmin who holds the staff also likes to see the teacher and likes to listen to the Dharma, but because he has harm and suffering, he is sick, and if he is sick, he may die from that disease. Then, Venerable Shariputra put on his robes and went to the residence of the son of the Brahmin who holds the staff, and the son of the Brahmin who holds the staff saw Venerable Shariputra from afar. Having seen him, he also asked to get up from the bed. Then, Venerable Shariputra, seeing that the son of the Brahmin who holds the staff was about to get up from the bed, said to the son of the Brahmin who holds the staff: Son of the staff holder, there are other seats for me to sit on, do not get up from the bed. Having said this, Venerable Shariputra sat on the prepared seat. Having sat down, Venerable Shariputra said these words to the son of the Brahmin who holds the staff: Son of the staff holder, are you able to endure? Are you able to live? Have your intense pain, unbearable pain, burning pain, and strong unpleasant feelings disappeared? Or are they diminishing? Do they appear to have disappeared? Do they not appear to be diminishing? The son of the staff holder said: Venerable Shariputra, I am not able to endure, nor am I able to live, because my body is being afflicted by intense pain, unbearable pain, burning pain, and strong unpleasant feelings, and those feelings of mine appear to be diminishing and improving, but they have not disappeared. Venerable Shariputra, for example, if a very strong person tightly binds the head of a very weak person with a strong, long rope, then that person's head will ache unbearably, similarly, Venerable Shariputra, my head is experiencing unbearable feelings, and those feelings of mine appear to be diminishing and improving, but they have not disappeared. Venerable Shariputra, for example, if a butcher or a butcher's apprentice cuts open the belly of a cow with a sharp butcher's knife, then the cow's belly will experience unbearable feelings.

Thus, Venerable Shariputra, my stomach ailment is very severe, and those feelings of mine have become more intense later, and painful later, it is not that they are not obvious. Venerable Shariputra, for example, if two very strong men were to seize a very weak man by his left and right arms and burn him in a fire, then his body would become unbearably hot. Similarly, Venerable Shariputra, my body is extremely hot, and those feelings of mine have become more intense later, and painful later, it is not that they are not obvious. Venerable Shariputra, therefore, I do not have patience, I do not have the ability to live, because my body is afflicted by intense suffering, unbearable suffering, burning suffering, and extremely unpleasant feelings. Those feelings of mine have become more intense later, and painful later, it is not that they are not obvious. Shariputra said: Son of the Holder, then I will ask you, answer truthfully according to your level of endurance. Son of the Holder, what do you think? Which do you choose, hell beings or animals? Venerable Shariputra, hell beings would rather choose animals. Which do you choose, animals or pretas? Venerable Shariputra, animals would rather choose pretas. Which do you choose, pretas or humans?
