May the earth be pleased! May the earth not be displeased! Having renounced in that very doctrine, having abandoned all defilements, may I realize the state of an Arhat! Thus, my preceptor, the perfectly complete Buddha Kashyapa, just as he taught, is the supreme among those endowed with the qualities of discipline. May I also, like Shakyamuni, the supreme king of the Shakyas, be shown as the supreme among those endowed with the qualities of discipline. Having said this, he died and transmigrated from there, transcending time, and took rebirth in the city of Varanasi, in the house of a chief minister. When he was born and grew up, King Krki appointed him as a minister. Then, when the perfectly complete Buddha Kashyapa, having completed all the deeds of a Buddha, passed completely into the realm of Nirvana without remainder, King Krki made offerings to his relics and had a precious stupa built, one yojana in circumference. The king appointed the minister's son as the superintendent of that stupa. Then, one day, King Krki, having completely finished the stupa in every way, wanted to hold a festival for the stupa there. He prepared much food, drink, and clothing, and sent people to invite the monks. However, seven days after the perfectly complete Buddha Kashyapa had passed into Nirvana, the doctrine declined. Those monks who had power had all passed into Nirvana, and those ordinary people had become householders. Then, those inviters could not find even one monk, and King Krki said, "Where have those monks gone?" The ministers replied, "It has been seven days since the perfectly complete Buddha passed into Nirvana, and the doctrine has declined." The king said, "Is there not even one monk who will uphold his doctrine?" Having said this, King Krki paid homage to the stupa and departed.

The minister's son also paid homage to that stupa and made a prayer: "By this root of virtue, wherever I am born, may I be born into a lineage that is rich, has much wealth, and great enjoyment. May I please the Fully and Perfectly Enlightened Buddha Kashyapa, who prophesied the Brahmin boy, and may I not displease him. May I be ordained in that very teaching, abandon all defilements, and realize the state of an Arhat. Furthermore, may I uphold the teaching after he passes into complete Nirvana." Monks, what do you think? The minister's son at that time was none other than the monk Kashyapa, who made the prayer there. The Hundred Karmas. Twenty-fourth Chapter. The one called 'Son of Holding' is as follows: The story takes place in Rajagriha. At that time, in Rajagriha, there lived a great and eminent Brahmin named Holding. In the village called Adambudana, there lived a Brahmin named King. The two were friendly, intimate, and close. Then, Brahmin King, together with his wife, played and rejoiced, and his wife conceived a child. After nine or ten months, she gave birth to a boy who was handsome, pleasing to look at, and beautiful. They held a grand birth celebration and named him Shariputra and Near King. Later, at some point, the wife of Brahmin Holding also conceived a child. After nine or ten months, she gave birth to a boy who was handsome, pleasing to look at, and beautiful. They held a grand birth celebration and were naming the boy, saying, "This boy is the son of the great and eminent Brahmin Holding, so let this boy's name be called 'Son of Holding'." After that, the son of Holding was raised and nurtured with milk, butter, yogurt, ghee, and the essence of ghee. When they both grew up, they were sent to a school for children to learn, and they both thoroughly learned the letters, and they both learned all the treatises. Near King then...

At the age of sixteen, he also mastered the grammar of logic and defeated all government challengers. Then, at some point, he took refuge in a hermitage and became ordained among all the wanderers there. There, when the Buddha appeared in the world, the Brahmin's son Shariputra and Maudgalyayana's son both became ordained in the Blessed One's teachings. There, the two of them abandoned all defilements and directly realized the state of Arhatship. The Blessed One declared one of them to be the foremost among those with great wisdom, and the other to be the foremost among those with magical powers. The Brahmin boy, the son of Holding, became a close and valiant servant of the king, constantly going to the royal palace, and because he was endowed with wisdom, King Embodied appointed him as the chief of ministers and bestowed upon him a great foundation of wealth. The world desires wealth. Then, at some point, he also took a wife because the time was right, and he played and rejoiced with her, enjoying happiness and delight, and he caused the family's wealth to increase and be maintained. Then, in Rajagriha (Rajgir, located in present-day Bihar), he relied on the king and took wealth from Brahmins and householders, and he relied on Brahmins and householders and took wealth from the king. Then, at some point, the venerable Shariputra saw that the time had come to tame the son of Holding, so in the early morning he put on his robes and Dharma garments, took his alms bowl, and went to the house of the Brahmin, the son of Holding. At that time, the Brahmin, the son of Holding, was washing his face on the branches of the Mallika tree, and the Brahmin, the son of Holding, saw the venerable Shariputra from afar. Having seen him, he went to where the venerable Shariputra was, and having arrived, he embraced the venerable Shariputra with all his limbs, led him into the house, and had him sit on the prepared seat, saying, 'Shariputra, please eat and drink milk.' Shariputra said, 'Son of Holding, you have already made my heart happy, that is enough.' The son of Holding said, 'Shariputra'
