You went to my house a long time ago, why didn't you even eat a single bite of food? Shariputra said: 'Son of Holding, you are so immoral and degenerate, relying on the king to obtain the wealth of Brahmins and householders, and relying on Brahmins and householders to obtain the wealth of the king.' Son of Holding said: 'Shariputra, I am a householder, living at home, so I must ensure that myself, my parents, children, wife, servants, maids, employees, those who live on leftovers, friends, close ones, relatives, and elders are all truly content with happiness.' For the king, it is also necessary to rely on the land, worship the gods, destroy old altars, and give alms to monks and Brahmins. I cannot easily become wealthy by relying solely on righteous conduct.' Shariputra said: 'Son of Holding, then I will ask you, answer as you can bear it.' For example, if someone commits unrighteous deeds and evil deeds for the sake of his parents, and because of committing unrighteous deeds and evil deeds, he dies and falls into evil realms after death, falling into hell, born in the hells of sentient beings, and is seized by the guards of the hells of sentient beings, and is made to experience intense, unbearable, burning, and unpleasant feelings, and then he says: 'Guards of the hells of sentient beings, do not inflict such harm on me.' Why is that? Because I committed unrighteous deeds and evil deeds for the sake of my parents, and because I committed unrighteous deeds and evil deeds, I died and fell into evil realms after death, falling into hell, born in the hells of sentient beings.' Son of Holding, what do you think? Can that person achieve his purpose from the guards of the hells of sentient beings? Son of Holding said: 'Shariputra, that is impossible.' Shariputra said: 'Son of Holding, a good man with faith enjoys the benefits of Dharma and virtuous deeds...'

Having accomplished wealth, one should serve one's parents righteously at all times, respect them righteously, and support them with righteous comfort. One should not commit even the slightest sin, and should righteously follow the path of virtue. Abiding in this way, the parents will also think: 'This son of good family is endowed with faith, is able to practice, and lives by the Dharma. This son of good family, endowed with the Dharma, having accomplished wealth through the merits of good deeds, serves us righteously at all times, respects us righteously, and supports us with righteous comfort. He does not commit even the slightest sin, and righteously follows the path of virtue.' Son of good family, if one can again be filial to one's parents, then one should expect all virtuous qualities to increase and not diminish. Son who holds, for example, if someone, for the sake of sons, wives, slaves, maids, servants, hired laborers, friends, close friends, relatives, elders, kings, gods, ascetics, and Brahmins, engages in non-Dharmic conduct and wrong conduct. By engaging in non-Dharmic conduct and wrong conduct, after separating from the body and dying, one falls into bad destinies, bad migrations, and wrong falls, and is born in the hells of sentient beings. He is seized by the guards of the hells of sentient beings and made to experience intense, unbearable, hot, and unpleasant feelings. He will say: 'Hells guards of sentient beings, do not inflict such harm on me! Why? Because I have engaged in non-Dharmic conduct and wrong conduct for the sake of ascetics and Brahmins.' Son who holds, what do you think? Will that person be able to achieve that goal from the guards of the hells of sentient beings? Son who holds said: Shariputra, that is impossible. Shariputra said: Son who holds, a son of good family endowed with faith, endowed with the Dharma, having accomplished wealth through the merits of good deeds, gives food to ascetics and Brahmins, and does not commit even the slightest sin.

Not doing, the path of merit is also well taken. If one dwells there, then ascetics and Brahmins, with good intentions, will again have compassion. The son of the holder, in this way, ascetics and Brahmins, with good intentions, will again have compassion for that person. It is hoped that his virtuous dharmas will only increase and not decrease. Having spoken thus, the Brahmin's son wept and shed tears. After that, the Brahmin's son wiped away his tears with the edge of his garment and said to the Venerable Shariputra: O Shariputra, this is not long after I took a wife. For this reason, I have committed many sins without marrying. Venerable Shariputra, I will now forever abandon this marriage, and from now on, I will receive the five precepts of pure conduct from Venerable Shariputra. After that, the Venerable Shariputra established the Brahmin's son in the five precepts of pure conduct, and then he rose from his seat and left. After that, the Venerable Shariputra went to the forest in the southern mountains. Another monk, dwelling in the Bright Garden Bird Kalandaka, went from the Bright Garden to the forest in the southern mountains, and that monk saw the Venerable Shariputra from afar. Having seen him, he went to the Venerable Shariputra, and having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Venerable Shariputra and sat on one side. Having sat on one side, the Venerable Shariputra said to that monk: Monk, where have you come from now? That monk said: Venerable Shariputra, I have just come from the Bright Garden Bird Kalandaka. Shariputra said: Do you know the Brahmin's son? Venerable Shariputra, I know him, he was a friend of the Venerable Shariputra when he lived at home in the past. Shariputra said: Venerable Brahmin's son, is he free from trouble? Is he free from fear? Is he happy? Is he free from illness?
