Uncorrected version. Having directly realized with one's own direct perception, and having attained: My birth is exhausted. The practice of purity has been completed. What had to be done has been done. I know there is no other existence beyond this. Thus, one experiences. At that time, when the Blessed One placed the venerable Mahakashyapa among hundreds of thousands of retinues, placing him in greatness and vastness equal to himself, he especially became the teacher of the world with gods. Then, the monks requested the Buddha, the Blessed One: Venerable Blessed One, when did you place the venerable Mahakashyapa in greatness and vastness equal to yourself? At that time, you saw him especially becoming the teacher of the world with gods. The Blessed One said: It is not only now, but also in the past. When I showed respect to this one, listen to how he became the teacher of all the many beings dwelling in the land. Monks, in the past, in the city of Varanasi, King Brahmadeva ruled. During his reign, there was wealth, prosperity, peace, good harvests, and it was filled with beings and many people. Strife and fighting were pacified, and there was no turmoil, internal strife, thieves, disease, or famine. It was abundant with rice, sugarcane, cattle, and buffalo. There was no harm, and thorns were cleared away. He ruled the kingdom like caring for a beloved only child. That king had many consorts, five hundred consorts. He played and rejoiced with them, enjoying happiness, but he had no children. Desiring children, he prayed to all the gods. They devoted themselves to praying, but neither a son nor a daughter was born. That king had five hundred ministers, but all of them were arrogant and lived without restraint. Among them, there was a chief minister named Treasure, who was wise, clear, mindful, knowledgeable in the law, disciplined, and cautious. Then, King Brahmadeva became discordant with a king under the sun. King Brahmadeva thought: Which minister should I place in that land under the sun to meet with that king?

Then (the king) thought, 'I wish (he) could become a force to protect the country.' After that, he saw a minister named 'Chief Minister Treasure,' who was intelligent, clear-minded, broad-minded, principled, humble, and cautious. So (the king) met with that minister, thinking, '(He) can become a force to protect the country.' Then the king appointed him to a remote mountainous area, saying, 'Go there and protect my country.' He replied, 'I will follow all the orders of Your Majesty.' After saying that, he went to that mountainous area. After he arrived there, he controlled the land under the sun and did everything possible to prevent any harm to that land. Later, King Brahma-given became old and frail, and his wife became pregnant. After nine or ten months, she gave birth to a handsome, lovely, and beautiful child. They held a grand birth celebration for him and named him according to family tradition. They nourished him with milk, yogurt, butter, condensed milk, and the essence of butter. When he was able to walk, the king began to think: 'Now I am old and will soon die. After I die, if this young child cannot rule the country, then after I die, which of my ministers will be able to protect my son and the country?' Then he saw that all five hundred ministers were living a life of obesity and debauchery. He wondered, 'Who else is there?' After examining, he thought that the minister named 'Chief Minister Treasure,' who was intelligent, clear-minded, broad-minded, principled, humble, and cautious, would be able to protect my son and the country after I die. So he thought, 'I should honor him in such a way that he will be respected by everyone in the country.' Then the king sent a messenger to him, saying, 'I want to see you, please come.' As soon as the Chief Minister Treasure heard this news, he immediately set off for Varanasi. The king, in order to honor him, had the roads and cities decorated, and the king himself fully armed, led four divisions of troops to meet the Chief Minister.

After welcoming him, King Brahma, whenever he met him, descended from the elephant and was very happy, embracing him from the neck and riding together in one vehicle. Because he possessed great wealth, he went to the city of Varanasi, had him sit on a cushion, cooked food together, ate from one plate, and gave him a great pile of wealth. After giving, that king said to him, 'Now I am old and will die before long. These five hundred ministers will think that after I die, the king is a child, and they will despise the young man. After I die, you can protect the son and the kingdom, so I entrust the son and the kingdom to you. After I die, please protect these two.' The chief minister Mazo replied, 'I will do as the god has commanded.' Then, one day, King Brahma was afflicted with illness, and although he was treated with medicines from roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits, he could not be cured. So he placed the prince on the throne, entrusted him to the chief minister Mazo, and after his death, protected the king's son and the country, and proclaimed it in all directions. Then, after the old king died, he took care of his affairs, gathered the five hundred ministers, and admonished them, 'Do not think that the old king made a mistake, so no one will summon us again. I will divide the country among all of you. In any case, even though this king is a child, we must make him invincible.' So, he divided the country among those five hundred ministers. He also personally protected the king's son and his family. Then, when he grew up, the chief minister Mazo reported, 'O god, the king father entrusted the god and the kingdom to me, and after the father passed away, I protected the god and the kingdom.' Monks, what do you think? The one who was then called the chief minister Mazo, who was endowed with the conduct of a Bodhisattva, is none other than this Kasyapa, and it was the same there.
