Born into a lineage of..., having mastered all treatises, Through reasoned debate, all disputes were silenced. This person pleased the Blessed One, did not displease him. Having renounced in the Blessed One's teachings, abandoning all defilements, he directly realized the state of an Arhat. The Blessed One declared: It is due to the power of past aspirations. Asked: Where did this venerable one make his aspirations? The Blessed One declared: Monks, in the distant past, during this very fortunate eon, when beings had a lifespan of twenty thousand years, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Well-Gone, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed Trainer of beings to be tamed, the Unequaled, Teacher of gods and humans, Buddha, the Blessed One, named Light Treasury, appeared in the world. At the time when all the Buddha's activities were completed, he passed into the realm of Nirvana without remainder. King Krīkī built a stupa of his relics, made of precious jewels, one yojana in circumference, completely perfect in every way, made great offerings, and established the custom of festivals. Then, the king proclaimed: All the people who dwell in this Varanasi should go there and pay homage when the stupa festival comes. Whoever does not go there will have all his possessions confiscated. King Krīkī's advisor was an unbeliever. The advisor's son was friendly and close to the king's son. Then, the Brahmin advisor, being an unbeliever, did not go there out of hatred. King Krīkī heard this and thought, "The advisor has broken my command." As soon as he heard this, the king was angry and said, "I will seize all his possessions and not let him go." Then, the king's son heard this and told the advisor's son, "You should go and tell your father to go to the stupa festival quickly. Otherwise, the king will confiscate all your possessions." As soon as he heard this, the Brahmin advisor immediately went to the temple with his son.

So it was. Having gone there, he saw many people diligently making offerings to the stupa. Then, the son of the reciter saw it and developed faith in that stupa. Having developed faith, he paid great respect to that stupa and made the following aspiration: 'Alas! By this root of virtue, may I, wherever I am born, be born into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family. May I be handsome, pleasing to behold, and beautiful. May I understand all the scriptures. May I be able to completely refute all debates in the scriptures. May I please the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light, the Buddha Light who prophesied to the Brahmin boy. May I not displease him. May I be ordained in that very doctrine, abandon all defilements, and realize the state of an Arhat.' After the boy made such an aspiration, he was trampled to death by many people. He died with a joyful mind towards that stupa, and having passed away, he was born as a god. When a son or daughter of the gods is born, by nature, three thoughts arise: 'From where did I die? Where was I born? By what action was I born?' Then, he saw that he had died from the human realm, was born as a god, and was born there because he had generated joy towards the stupa of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light. Then, as soon as that son of the gods saw that, he perfectly remembered the kindness of his previous life. Adorned with earrings and bracelets that swayed and moved, his body adorned with necklaces and belts, wearing a crown adorned with various precious jewels, his body anointed with saffron, tamala leaves, and sika and other fragrances. That very night, he filled a vessel with celestial utpala flowers, lotuses, water lilies, white lotuses, and mandarava flowers. Then he went to where the stupa of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light was, and having arrived, he scattered celestial utpala flowers, lotuses, water lilies, and white lotuses on the stupa of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light, and sprinkled it with agarwood powder, Chinese incense powder, and celestial flowers.

After being trampled by those cowherds, they dwelt with joyful hearts. While he was dwelling there, his father heard the news that his son had been trampled to death by many people. As soon as he heard the news, he went there and, embracing his son's bones, wept and uttered cries of sorrow. The divine son saw this and said to him: Father, do not grieve, do not grieve, do not suffer, do not lament. The Brahmin said: Who are you? He said: I am your son. He said: Where were you born? He said: I was born in the heavens. He said: What deeds did you do? He said: I made offerings to this stupa and generated joy. You too should abandon your former views and make offerings to this stupa, generating joy. If you do so, you will become the source of all good. Having said this, the divine son vanished. After hearing those words, the Brahmin also eliminated his sorrow for his son and generated great joy towards the stupa. After he became joyful, he made great offerings to the stupa and made the aspiration: Alas, may I, by this root of virtue, wherever I am born, be born into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family. May I please Maitreya Buddha, the Brahmin boy who was prophesied by the Fully Awakened Buddha Krakucchanda, who relied on this son, and may I not displease him. Monks, what do you think? The son who was in front of the Brahmin at that time was none other than this Brahmin boy. The father at that time was none other than this Brahmin. The maturation of the deed of that boy making offerings to the stupa and making aspirations caused him to be born, wherever he was born, into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family, with a beautiful form, pleasing to behold, and beautiful, understanding all the scriptures, and defeating all opponents with reason. Monks, you...
