Fifth Chapter Summary Verses: Fifth Chapter Summary Verses. The summary is: Ugly enjoys Chandala, Excellent and heavenly attached ox, Compassionate virtuous Gilipo, Black arrow holder bestows and va. As for the one called Ugly: The Blessed One, while traveling in the land of Gaga, went to Shishu Mara Mountain and resided in the forest of wild animals in the terrifying grove of Shishu Mara Mountain. At that time, on Shishu Mara Mountain, there lived a wealthy householder, rich in possessions, with great enjoyment, vast and extensive, possessing the wealth of the son of Vaishravana, rivaling the wealth of the son of Vaishravana. He took a wife from his own clan, and together they played, rejoiced, and indulged in pleasure. Later, his wife became pregnant, and after nine or ten months, she gave birth to a boy with eighteen kinds of ugly features. As soon as the parents saw him, they were filled with great suffering, thinking: "Our son is born so flawed, what use is such a son? It would be better to chop him up and feed him to the dogs after he dies!" Then the householder's wife said: "Killing is the most despicable thing in the world, and it will create the karma for beings to be born in hell. We must not do that. Even if this son is so flawed, I will raise him in a secluded place, and when he grows up, I will drive him out of the house and let him seek a miserable livelihood." So, the two of them raised the boy in a secluded place. Later, he grew up, and they named him Ugly. After that, he was driven out of the house, and because he was hungry and thirsty, he became emaciated, and leaning on a staff, holding a bowl, he began to beg. When he came to the door of a house, a place where goods were stored, or a shop, the children of the villagers would beat him with fists, slaps, sticks, and clods of earth, and shout: "A demon has come!" and drive him away. At that time, he felt great suffering, thinking: "What evil deeds have I done that I should suffer such consequences?"

Who would suffer such misery? I left the city where I lived, came out of the city, and went to those gardens, thinking that even if I begged, I might find enough food there. So I came out of the city and began to wander in those gardens. There, they thought I was a ghost, and they beat me with fists, ashes, sticks, and clubs, and drove me away. Then, I was frightened and scared by the beating, and because of people's fear and fright, I entered the dense thickets and spent the day. After the sun set, I went to those gardens, and there, I lived only on whatever rotten food there was. For a sentient being in the last existence, dying in the intermediate state is without a place or opportunity. There, he found a little bit of life force. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, is the teacher of the one and only path, possessing mastery over the two kinds of knowledge and wisdom, skilled in the three unmixed mindfulnesses, fearless with the four fearlessnesses, liberated from the five realms of existence, skilled in the six sense bases, with the seven branches of enlightenment as his field of activity, meditating on the eight liberations, entering into the nine successive abidings, possessing the ten powers, and roaring the great roar of the true lion. According to the Dharma, three times during the day and three times during the night, that is, six times during the day and night, with the Buddha's eye, he looks upon the world, who is declining, who is prospering, who is living in poverty, who has become miserable, who is endowed with harm, who is poor, miserable, and endowed with harm, who is inclined towards the evil realms, who is falling into the evil realms, who has fallen into the evil realms, who is it that I will rescue from the evil realms and place in the heavenly realms, liberation, and fruition. Who is it that is drowning in the mud of wrong conduct, I will make him abide in the right path. Who is it that does not have the seven noble riches, I will make him possess the dominion of the seven noble riches. Who is it that has not generated roots of virtue, I will make him generate them. Who is it that has already generated roots of virtue, I will make him fully ripen. Who is it that has already fully ripened roots of virtue, I will make him...

May it be pierced by the arrow of wisdom. Sura thought, 'To make the world adorned by the appearance of the Buddha full of fruits,' and thus entered the observation of wisdom. The ocean is the abode of aquatic creatures, and even though the tides may sometimes recede, for those disciples who need to be tamed, the time of the Buddha will never pass. Then, the Blessed One, thinking that the time had come to tame the Ugly Boy, entered into the Samadhi of Cessation. Having arisen from the Samadhi of Cessation, in order to tame him, the Buddha himself emanated into an even more hideous form than him, filled a bowl with food and drink, and went to the place where the Ugly Boy was. Then, the Ugly Boy saw the Blessed One from afar. Having seen him, he fled, thinking, 'This one has come again, and will come to beat me.' Then, the Blessed One blessed him in such a way that he could not escape. By the blessing of the Blessed One, he became desirous of seeing, thinking, 'Who is this one? Let me see for a moment.' So he returned, and the Ugly Boy saw the extremely hideous emanation, and as soon as he saw it, the thought arose in his mind: 'Who are you, like this one?' So he went to where the Buddha's emanation was, and the Buddha's emanation, seeing the Ugly Boy, pretended to flee, and the Ugly Boy said: 'Friend, why do you flee when you see me?' The Buddha's emanation said: 'Friend, I have become like this body because of the ripening of past karma. I am afraid that you will think I am a ghost and beat me, so I fled when I saw you.' The Ugly Boy said: 'Friend, I have also become so ugly because of the ripening of past karma. Because I am ugly, my parents have driven me out of my home. I live by begging, and wherever I go, I am beaten and driven away with fists, slaps, sticks, and stones. I am afraid of being beaten by people, so I have entered and dwell in this thicket. Come here too, and let us live together.' Then, the emanation said: 'Let it be so.'
