If I could obtain land, I would also practice brahmacharya in the presence of the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One ordained him with the words, "Come, monk," and conferred full ordination, and also gave him instructions. He also abandoned all defilements through diligence, practice, and effort, and realized the state of an Arhat. He became an Arhat, free from desire for the three realms, regarding gold and ashes as equal, possessing a mind as impartial as the sky and the palm of the hand, cooled like sandalwood soaked in water, having shattered the shell of ignorance with wisdom, and having attained wisdom, supernormal powers, and individual perfect knowledge. He did not look to worldly gain, attachment, and honor, and became a place of worship, remembrance, and reverence for the gods and their retinues. Then, the monks asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: "Venerable, what deeds did 'The Ugly One' commit that, as a result of that karma, he was born into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family, and possessed eighteen kinds of ugly features? Because of his ugliness, his parents drove him out of the house, but as soon as he generated the mind of renunciation, his ugliness disappeared, and his appearance became beautiful. He pleased the Blessed One and did not displease him. Having renounced the teachings of the Blessed One, he abandoned all defilements and realized the state of an Arhat." The Blessed One said: "Monks, 'The Ugly One' himself performed and accumulated such karma. Monks, in the past, in a secluded village, there lived a miserly, stingy householder who clung to his possessions. One day, he was at home, and at a time when the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, did not reside, solitary Buddhas would appear in the world. A solitary Buddha came to that householder's house for alms, and the householder offered him food, but after offering the food, he felt regret and thought: 'Instead of giving this food to this bald-headed ascetic, it would have been better to give it to the gardener or the worker.' He felt regret.

Then (that person) snatched away the food, made disgusting actions with body and speech, and drove (the Pratyekabuddha) out of the house. Then, that Pratyekabuddha thought: This affliction has become degraded and decayed. It is not right for it to remain degraded forever, it must be stopped. So he rose into the sky above and displayed miracles such as burning, standing still, raining, and lightning. Those ordinary people quickly developed faith through the miracles. Like a tree being cut down with a saw, they prostrated at (the Pratyekabuddha)'s feet and said: O possessor of great merit, please descend! Please save me from the hands of this mire of evil deeds in which I am drowning. That Pratyekabuddha, out of compassion for him, descended to the ground, and that person prostrated at his feet, asking for forgiveness. He again offered food and made the aspiration: Like this, I have done harm to such a worthy object of offering as you. May I not be the recipient of this karma. Like this, through this root of virtue from my repeated respectful offerings, may I be born in whatever place I am born, into a wealthy family with much wealth and great enjoyment. May I please a teacher who is even more excellent than this, and may I not displease the teacher. May I also obtain such qualities. If the result of this sinful action inevitably ripens upon me, then as soon as I generate the mind of renunciation, may my ugliness disappear and may I become beautiful. Monks, what do you think? The householder at that time was none other than this ugly person. Because he snatched away the food offered to the Pratyekabuddha there, and made disgusting actions with body and speech, driving (the Pratyekabuddha) out of the house, the ripening of that karma caused him to be born ugly wherever he was born, and to be driven out of the house. He again offered food to the Pratyekabuddha and made the aspiration that wherever he would be born, he would be born into a wealthy family with much wealth and great enjoyment. May he please a teacher who is even more excellent than this, and may he not displease the teacher.

May you not be displeased. May you also attain such qualities. Due to the ripening of that karma, wherever he is born, he is born into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family. Monks, I have been pleased by someone like me, who is even more superior than a billion Buddhas, and have not been displeased. Having renounced in my own teachings, I have abandoned all defilements and realized Arhatship. Furthermore, this one renounced in the teachings of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light Protector. He practiced celibacy for one lifetime, and at the time of death, he made a prayer, saying: 'Like me, having renounced in the teachings of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light Protector and practiced celibacy for one lifetime, I have not attained any accumulation of merit. May I please the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light Protector's prophecy of the Brahmin boy, who is the Blessed One Buddha. May I not displease him. May I renounce only in that Buddha's teachings, abandon all defilements, and realize Arhatship.' Therefore, monks, I have attained the same qualities, the same power, the same deeds, and the same means as the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light Protector. He pleased me and did not displease me. Having renounced in my own teachings, I have abandoned all defilements and realized Arhatship. The Hundred Karmas, Volume Eighteen. The one called 'Bringing Happiness' is as follows: The basis of the story is that he was residing in Shravasti. At that time, King Bright King ruled in Shravasti. In the city of Varanasi, a king named Brahma-given ruled, and the two were incompatible with each other, and from time to time they killed many people. Then, later, King Brahma-given's army gathered four parts, namely, elephant troops, horse troops, chariot troops, and infantry troops, and after equipping them, they advanced towards King Bright King for battle, and set up camp on the bank of the Khangden River.
