Then he grew weary and thought: I should abandon my retinue and dwell alone in the forest. So he abandoned those attendants and went to a forest. In that forest lived a fierce, terrifying, and splendor-stealing yaksha named Black Yaksha. He often caused suffering to thousands of beings. In that forest also lived a sage, and the yaksha was very fond of that sage. Then, the black Brahmin saw that sage from afar. Having seen him, he also became fond of him. Having become fond of him, he went straight to him. He spoke to him in a pleasing manner. Therefore, he developed the four meditations and the five superknowledges there. Then, one day, that old sage died. After he died, the black sage stayed in that place. Then, one day, the people of Rajagriha requested the Blessed One, saying: Venerable, this Black Yaksha, holds hatred where there is no hatred towards us, acts as an enemy where he is not an enemy, and often causes harm to thousands of beings. Venerable, the Blessed One has subdued fierce nagas, such as Nanda and Upananda and others, and has also subdued fierce yakshas, such as those dwelling in the wilderness and others. If the Blessed One, for the sake of compassion, could also subdue the Black Yaksha, that would be excellent. Then, the Blessed One silently granted the request of the people of Rajagriha without saying anything. The Blessed One summoned that yaksha by means of miraculous power and said: Hey, do not harm sentient beings! Abandon this sinful deed! He replied: As the Blessed One commands me, so shall I do. Having said this, he took refuge and precepts from the Blessed One and said: Venerable, from now on, I will protect and guard the people of Rajagriha. Having said this, he bowed to the feet of the Blessed One with his head, and then departed from the Blessed One and returned to his own abode to dwell. He stayed there, thinking: That black sage is an ascetic.

无意义之语。此（夜叉）见到苦行者七日后将死，因对其心怀慈悲，故走到他跟前说道：‘贤者，您为何要行如此剧烈的苦行？您将在七日后死去。’听到此语后，苦行者生起极大的痛苦，因悲伤而失去了神通，比之前更加悲伤，发出深深的哀叹。然后，夜叉说道：‘贤者，不要过于悲伤，不要过于悲伤，不要烦恼，不要哀叹。世尊住在王舍城（Rajagriha），他知道死亡的道路。去皈依佛陀世尊吧，他会为您做一切善事。’听到此语后，黑苦行者舍弃一切，前往光明园林。当时，世尊坐在无数眷属之中，正在说法。黑苦行者从远处看到佛陀世尊，其身以大丈夫相三十二相庄严，光芒四射，犹如燃烧的火焰，犹如火舌被酥油滋养，犹如明灯置于金器之中，犹如以各种珍宝装饰的宝塔，他看到智慧明亮、无垢且清净的佛陀世尊。见到后，他生起极大的欢喜。由积累善根之因所生的 众生初见佛陀时的喜悦，即使是十二年间修习止观禅定者，也无法生起如此的喜悦。如此见到后，他对世尊生起极大的欢喜。他生起欢喜后，便前往世尊所在之处，到达后，以头顶礼世尊之足，为了听闻佛法而坐在世尊面前。然后，世尊了解了他的想法、习气、根器、知识和自性，并为他宣说了与他相应的佛法。因此，他就在那个座位上……

Meaningless words. This (yaksha), seeing that the ascetic would die in seven days, went to him out of compassion and said, 'O sage, why do you practice such severe asceticism? You will die in seven days.' Having heard this, the ascetic felt great suffering, and because of his sorrow, he lost his magical powers. He felt even more sorrow than before and was lamenting deeply. Then, the yaksha said, 'O sage, do not grieve too much, do not grieve too much, do not be afflicted, do not lament. The Blessed One resides in Rajagriha, and he knows the path to death. Go and take refuge in the Buddha, the Blessed One, and he will do all good things for you.' Having heard this, the black ascetic abandoned everything and went to the Grove of Light. At that time, the Blessed One was sitting amidst hundreds of thousands of attendants, teaching the Dharma. Then, the black ascetic saw from afar the Buddha, the Blessed One, whose body was well adorned and radiant with the thirty-two major marks of a great being, like a blazing fire, like a flame fed with butter, like a lamp placed in a golden vessel, like a stupa adorned with various precious jewels. He saw the Buddha, the Blessed One, who was intelligent, immaculate, and pure. Having seen him, he felt great joy. The joy that arises in a sentient being who sees the Buddha for the first time, born from the cause of accumulating virtuous roots, is such that even one who has practiced calm abiding meditation for twelve years will not experience such joy. Having seen him in this way, he became very joyful towards the Blessed One. Having become joyful, he went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and sat before him to listen to the Dharma. The moment he saw the truth while sitting, he manifested the fruit of non-return. Having seen the truth, he rose from his seat, draped his upper robe over one shoulder, and, with his palms joined, bowed towards where the Blessed One was, and said to the Blessed One: "Venerable, if I can be ordained and fully ordained in the Dharma and Vinaya well-spoken by the Venerable One, and obtain the status of a Bhikshu, I would also like to practice the pure conduct in the presence of the Blessed One." Then, the Blessed One ordained him with the words, "Come, Bhikshu," and fully ordained him, and also prophesied for him. He also, through diligence, practice, and effort, abandoned all defilements and manifested the state of an Arhat. That Arhat, having become free from the desire of the three realms, became equal to gold and dung, possessed a mind like the sky and the palm of the hand, became cool like sandalwood soaked in water, shattered the shell of ignorance with wisdom, obtained wisdom, supernormal powers, and individual self-realization, did not look to the gains, attachments, and honors of existence, and became an object of worship, remembrance, and reverence by the gods with power and near power.
