May it be realized. Monks, what do you think? The monk at that time was none other than this kind-hearted monk, who practiced the pure conduct there for a lifetime, and at the time of death, made the aspiration: May I please the Blessed One, the Tathagata, the Perfectly Awakened One, the Light-Protecting Buddha, who was prophesied by the Brahmin boy. May he not displease me. May I be ordained in his doctrine, abandon all defilements, and realize the state of an Arhat. Therefore, monks, I am very similar to the Tathagata, the Perfectly Awakened One, the Light-Protecting Buddha, with the same power, the same deeds, and the same means, having attained them. He has pleased me and has not displeased me, and having been ordained in my own doctrine, he has abandoned all defilements and realized the state of an Arhat. The story of "Gelpo" is as follows: The basis of the story is that the Blessed One was residing in Shravasti. At that time, there lived in Shravasti a Brahmin who had no son, and because he desired a son, he prayed to all the deities. Then, later, his wife became pregnant. After nine or ten months, she gave birth to a boy who was handsome, pleasing to look at, beautiful, fat, and with well-developed skin, flesh, and blood. They held a grand celebration of his birth and discussed what name should be given to the boy. Because the boy was fat and had well-developed skin, flesh, and blood, they said, "Therefore, let this boy be named Gelpo." Then, the boy Gelpo was raised and nurtured with milk, yogurt, butter, ghee, and the essence of butter. When he grew up, he learned letters, the conduct of Brahmins, behavior, (Tibetan: ༀ, Devanagari: ओम्, Romanized Sanskrit: oṃ, Literal Chinese meaning: Om), (Tibetan: བྷོ་, Devanagari: भो, Romanized Sanskrit: bho, Literal Chinese meaning: Bho), cleanliness, rituals, taking ashes, holding pills, the Rigveda of explanation, the Rigveda of sacrifice, the Rigveda of poetry, the Rigveda of politics, the act of sacrifice, causing others to perform sacrifices, giving, receiving, reciting, and the means of teaching others to recite, and became a Brahmin skilled in six kinds of activities.

Then, he eventually became proficient in the eighteen branches of knowledge. That Brahmin's house was not far from the house of Anāthapiṇḍada, the householder. That Brahmin's son associated with Anāthapiṇḍada, and thus became fond of the Blessed One's teachings. Then one day, his parents died. After his parents died, he went to the city of Śūrpāraka for some reason. He eventually wandered around, and in a valley between Śrāvastī and the city of Śūrpāraka, there was a forest clearing. In that forest clearing lived a hermit. The Brahmin's son learned of this and went to the hermit, prostrated at his feet, and sat before him to listen to the Dharma. Then the hermit also praised renunciation to him. As soon as he heard it, he developed a mind in accordance with renunciation. He then went forth from that very hermit and lived in that forest, but he did not attain any special qualities. Then one day, the hermit died, and that foolish one remained in that very place of asceticism. Then, when the Blessed One went to Śūrpāraka, the foolish boy saw the Blessed One coming from afar. As soon as he saw him, he thought, 'This is the Śākya, the one who knows all austerities, the one who sees all. He is coming this way, I must not fail to attend to him.' Then he thought, 'If I were to walk down from this rock with my feet, the Blessed One would be harmed. If I jump from this rock, I will have time to attend to him.' Thinking this, he jumped from that very rock. Then, the Blessed One blessed the ground there, making it like a soft cotton cushion. As soon as he landed, his feet were upright. He was delighted and went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and followed him. Then, the Blessed One, out of compassion for him, stopped on the road and sat down to one side. He also bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and sat before the Blessed One to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Blessed One to him
