May I become a Buddha, a Bhagavan! Just as I have now satisfied these beings with my own flesh and blood, and given up my life, so too, when I attain the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, may I also satisfy these beings with the essence of the sacred Dharma, and establish them in the ultimate liberation and the blissful Nirvana. Monks, what do you think? The one who became the ant king at that time, abiding in the conduct of a Bodhisattva, was myself. The eighty thousand ants who became ants at that time were these eighty thousand gods. At that time, I also satisfied them with my own flesh and blood, and gave up my life. Now, I also satisfy them with the essence of the sacred Dharma, and establish them in the ultimate liberation and the blissful Nirvana. The story called "The Field of Conduct" is as follows: The foundation of the discourse: [The Buddha] was residing in Jeta Grove in Shravasti. The Shravaka disciples of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, have two great assemblies that gather by the nature of Dharma: the time when the middle summer month arrives for the summer retreat, and the end of the autumn month. When the middle summer month is near for the summer retreat, the monks contemplate the distinctions of various places, and then go to valleys, caves, thatched huts, plains, cemeteries, forests, and remote dwellings to enter the summer retreat. At the end of the autumn month, they return and speak of what has been realized, and ask about what has not yet been realized. Then, a certain monk, having made a division of regions, traveled through the regions and went to Shravasti. There, he put down his alms bowl and Dharma robes. Then, in the early morning, having put on his lower garment and Dharma robes, he took his alms bowl and went to Shravasti for alms. He was newly arrived and had not gone there before. He was of little knowledge and unskilled in the field of conduct. He went to Shravasti very late, and when he looked, he saw other monks with their hands full and their alms bowls filled, returning. He thought, "Where is the place for conduct for these monks here?"

Thinking that he should ask where it would be easy to find alms, he went to Near Joy and asked, "Venerable Near Joy, I do not know the alms-seeking places in Shravasti. Please show me such a place where I can easily find alms." Near Joy, thinking to make fun of him, pointed to the house of a Brahmin named Good Virtue, Auspicious, and Harmony, who was unruly and unbelieving, and said, "Go to this house, and you will receive food from there." Having said this, Near Joy left. Then, that monk went to that house, and that Brahmin was preparing to go to another village for some matter. He thought, "This shaven-headed person wearing colorful clothes has come before me, which is inauspicious." So he seized the monk and beat him severely with fists and feet, then threw him away, causing the monk's head to be broken and bleeding, his robe torn, his bowl shattered, and his staff broken. After coming out of that house, he thought, "I would rather have no food." So he fasted and went to the grove of King Victorious. The monks saw him and asked, "Venerable, were you attacked by savages?" He replied, "I was not attacked by savages, but was mocked by Near Joy." After that, the monks heard about this and reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One taught, "A monk should not point out a non-alms-seeking place to another monk. If monks see someone unknowingly wanting to go, they should also stop him. If they stop him in this way, that is good. If they do not stop him, they will be at fault." Then, the monks reported to the Blessed One, "Venerable Near Joy sent this monk to a non-alms-seeking place, and this monk went there and personally experienced great harm." The Blessed One taught, "It is not only now that this is the case. In the past, this monk was also sent to a non-alms-seeking place by this same Near Joy, and he went there. Listen to how he encountered great harm. Monks, in the past...

In the past, in a lotus lake, lived a turtle. A fox, parched with thirst and wanting to drink water, entered that lotus lake. It saw the turtle and wanted to eat it, so it grabbed it. The turtle said to it: Friend, don't kill me, I'm not even a mouthful for you. If you let me go, I will show you a lot of food. Hearing this, the fox immediately released the turtle and said: Tell me, how can I find food? The turtle said: Friend, in a cave in a certain direction, live eight female marmots. You can kill them and eat them. In that cave also lives a lioness, who has just given birth and has two lion cubs. In order to protect them, she cannot leave the cave. Hearing this, the fox immediately headed towards the cave entrance. Another fox saw it and said: Friend, where are you going? It said: In this cave live eight female marmots, I will kill them and eat them. That fox said: Friend, be careful, if you go there you will encounter suffering. It said to that fox in verse: I Here am strong and diligent, no one can compare to me. Like an elephant falling into a pond, today I will destroy those eight female marmots. After saying this, it did not listen to that fox's words and entered the cave. As a result, one lion cub grabbed its ear, and the other grabbed its tail. The lioness said: Two children, what's the use of eating this, don't kill it. The two lion cubs listened to their mother's words, one cut off its ear, and the other cut off its tail, and then threw it away. Afterwards, the other fox saw it coming out of the cave entrance and said to it in verse: You Here are strong and diligent, no one can compare to you. A warrior becomes ugly, which is not in accordance with obtaining food. After that, it said to that fox, this is also it...
