The Fourth Chapter of Verses. The Fourth Chapter of Verses. The verses are: Loving-kindness Power and Black Wind, Two Ants and the Realm of Conduct, Monastery Elephant Dragon Lion and, Strife and Forest Cave Hearing, etc. Loving-kindness Power means: When the Teacher was residing in a pleasant place, in the Sutra of Turning the Wheel of Dharma, the Jataka of Yixi, the reasons were extensively explained as they arose. The monks requested the Blessed One: Venerable Blessed One, you have satisfied the five groups of monks with the nectar of the sacred Dharma, please look upon them as being placed in the ultimate, indestructible, accomplished, and blissful state of Nirvana. The Blessed One said: Not only now, but also in the past, I have satisfied them with my own flesh and blood, listen to how I placed them on the path of the ten virtuous actions. Monks, in the past, in the city of Varanasi, there was a king named Loving-kindness Power who ruled the country. During his reign, the country was rich and strong, peaceful and prosperous, with abundant harvests every year, a large population, no strife or war, and the riots, internal conflicts, thieves, diseases, and famines were pacified. It was full of rice, sugarcane, cattle, and buffaloes, without harm, and he ruled the country according to the Dharma, cherishing the people like a single beloved son. That king was compassionate, greatly compassionate, loving to all beings, and fond of giving. He gave generously and accumulated merit, satisfying the Shramanas, Brahmins, the poor and destitute, and beggars. He prepared many kinds of food and gave it to the beings living in the sky, water, and land. He practiced loving-kindness towards the many people living in the country. He pervaded all the people living in his country with a mind of loving-kindness, and therefore, no one could cause any harm to those beings. Then, one day, from the prison of King Vaishravana, a radiant light was released...

The five yakshas fled, stealing the glory of many people, and came to Bārāṇasī. After arriving there, they spread a plague, but they could not steal the glory of anyone, even those who had become animals. They thought: "What is the reason that we cannot steal the glory of anyone in this place, even those who have become animals? We should ask." So they asked the cowherds and shepherds: "Hey, in this place, who has the power that no one can be harmed in the slightest?" They said: "This king is of a loving nature. He dwells with a mind of love pervading as many people as there are living in the city. By that power, no one can be harmed in the slightest in this place." The yakshas thought: "That king is known to be very fortunate, of a loving nature, very compassionate, and loving towards sentient beings. He will surely be able to satisfy us." So they transformed into the guise of Brahmins and went before the power of loving-kindness and said: "Possessor of great compassion, please satisfy us from hunger!" The king said: "How shall I satisfy you with food?" They said: "Please satisfy us with freshly drawn blood!" Then the king thought: "From this appearance, if they eat such food, these people are certainly not human. These must be non-humans. I must do as I have vowed to them. I cannot fulfill their need for food without harming the bodies of others. And without harming others, I cannot obtain freshly drawn blood. If these beings can use my blood to fulfill their need for food, then I will give them my flesh and blood." So he said to those yakshas: "Friends, can my blood fulfill the need for food?" The yakshas said: "O god, it is useful!" Then, as soon as he heard that, King Loving-Kindness immediately had those yakshas brought before him.

Then he summoned the doctors and commanded, 'Hey, let five bloodlettings be made on my body, and let these beings be filled with blood.' The doctors reported, 'We dare not pierce the body of a god with swords.' Then the Bodhisattva thought, 'These ones do not want to see me leave, otherwise I will draw my own blood.' Bodhisattvas are skilled in all crafts and activities, so he himself took a mirror and made five bloodlettings on his own body, letting blood flow to each of the yakshas, and vowed, 'Until I have filled these yakshas, I will not stop these bloodlettings.' Then the lord of the gods, Indra, thought, 'Bodhisattvas are steadfast in their vows, and this Bodhisattva has also undertaken something extremely difficult. It is not right for the Bodhisattva to suffer for too long, otherwise I will add splendor to his entire body.' Then the lord of the gods, Indra, added the splendor of the gods to the Bodhisattva's entire body, and those bloodlettings also transformed to be very large. The Bodhisattva also effortlessly satisfied those five yakshas who were seizing the splendor, and then made a prayer to attain the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment: 'Alas, may I, with this root of virtue, become a guide to lead the blind world without a guide, To liberate beings who have not been liberated, to free beings who have not been freed, to give breath to beings who have not breathed, and to lead beings who have not completely passed beyond suffering to completely pass beyond suffering as a Buddha.' And he prayed, 'By this great generosity, may I become the self-arisen Buddha for beings. May I liberate from the ocean of existence those beings whom the previous victorious ones have not liberated.' Thus he did. Then when those yakshas were filled with blood and satisfied, and their senses were satisfied, they said to the Bodhisattva, 'Great compassionate one, what are you striving to accomplish with this effort?' The Bodhisattva said, 'I am striving to attain the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment.' They said:
