Having abandoned all, I have realized the state of Arhat. Among the two stories of ants, the first story of ants: The place of the discourse was when he was residing in the Bamboo Grove Monastery. There, when the Venerable Kaundinya saw the truths, eighty thousand gods also saw the truth. Then, the monks requested the Blessed One: Venerable, Blessed One, you have satisfied Kaundinya and the eighty thousand gods with the essence of the sacred Dharma. Please look upon placing them in the ultimate peace and blissful Nirvana. The Blessed One said: Not only now, but also in the past, I satisfied Kaundinya and these eighty thousand gods with my own flesh and blood, and gave them life. Listen to that. Monks, in the past, there was once a turtle with great compassion and loving-kindness living on the bank of a river. It was full of love for sentient beings, sometimes walking on land and sometimes walking in water. Later one day, it came out of the water and walked on land, and as it walked, it fell asleep on that land. Then, an ant came out of an anthill and came to the turtle. Seeing the turtle sleeping on the land, it returned to the anthill and told the other ants. There were also eighty thousand ants living in that anthill. After hearing the ant's words, they came out of the anthill and climbed onto the turtle's body. Then, they began to eat the turtle. The turtle woke up and saw that its body was covered with ants. Bodhisattvas do not fall into wrongdoing in their minds even if their bodies fall into wrongdoing. The Bodhisattva thought: Although I can go into the water, doing so would cause so many sentient beings to lose their lives. I am striving to benefit sentient beings, and I would not hesitate to give up my own life. I must not let so many sentient beings lose their lives! So he endured silently, staying there without saying a word. As the eighty thousand ants ate him, he made the aspiration: Alas! May this root of virtue make me an unsurpassed guide for sentient beings in the blind world without a teacher.

Liberating those who are not liberated, freeing those who are not freed, giving breath to those who have not breathed, and completely liberating those who have not completely escaped from sorrow, may I become the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Sugata, the Knower of the World, the Guide of beings to be tamed, the unsurpassed, the Teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Bhagavan. Just as I now satisfy these beings with my own flesh and blood and give up my life, so too, when I attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, may I also satisfy these beings with the essence of the sacred Dharma, lead them to the ultimate attainment of eternity, and place them in the bliss of Nirvana. Monks, what do you think? The one who was then born as a toad, abiding in the conduct of a Bodhisattva, was none other than myself. Those who were then born as eighty thousand ants were none other than these eighty thousand gods. At that time, I also satisfied these beings with my own flesh and blood and gave up my life. Now, I also satisfy these beings with the essence of the sacred Dharma, lead them to the ultimate attainment of eternity, and place them in the bliss of Nirvana. The second ant story is: The story takes place while residing in Shravasti. The detailed reasoning is as it appears in the Damamukha Sutra. When the venerable Ajnata Kaundinya realized the truths, eighty thousand gods also realized the truths. Then, the monks requested the Buddha Bhagavan: Venerable Bhagavan, please look at Kaundinya and the eighty thousand gods, who have been satisfied with the essence of the sacred Dharma and have attained the ultimate attainment of eternity, abiding in the bliss of Nirvana. The Bhagavan said: Not only now, but also in the past, I satisfied Kaundinya and these eighty thousand gods with my own flesh and blood and gave up my life, listen to this. Monks, in the past, not far from a secluded forest, there was a cave...

In a certain place, there lived a gazelle who was kind and loving, subsisting on roots and fruits, and unwilling to harm any being. One day, it was wandering outside when a hunter saw it and captured it alive. The hunter skinned it and let it go, taking the gazelle's skin with him. The gazelle, unable to bear the pain, went to a riverbank and lay down on the cool ground. Not long after, there was an anthill with eighty thousand ants living in it. An ant emerged from the anthill and went to the gazelle. Seeing that the gazelle had no skin, it returned to its nest and told the other ants. The eighty thousand ants came out of the nest and climbed onto the gazelle's body. As they began to eat, the gazelle awoke and saw that its body was covered with ants. Bodhisattvas, even if their bodies fall into wrongdoing, their minds will not fall into wrongdoing. The Bodhisattva thought: 'Although I have the ability to liberate myself, it would harm the lives of so many beings. I strive to benefit beings, and even sacrificing my own life is acceptable, but I must not harm the lives of so many beings for my own sake. I will surely die from this harm. What should I do? It is to give up my body for the benefit of beings. These ants are urging me to do so.' So, he endured silently, without saying a word, and made a vow to attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Alas! May this root of virtue make me a guide for the blind world without a guide, a leader for those without a leader, liberating those who are not liberated, freeing those who are not freed, causing those who have not breathed to breathe, and leading those who have not passed into complete nirvana into complete nirvana. May I become the Tathagata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, perfect in knowledge and conduct, Sugata, knower of the world, unsurpassed, tamer of beings, the supreme, teacher of gods and humans.
