It became an obstacle. Then, the monks asked the Blessed One Buddha: "Venerable Blessed One, what kind of deeds did you perform? The maturation of those deeds has led to the formation of a hundred thousand sanghas." The Blessed One said: "Monks, in other previous lives, I myself had the conditions to accumulate and bring about causes and conditions, coming like a flood, and I did and accumulated those deeds that would not be devoured by demons. Who else will experience those deeds that I have done and accumulated? Monks, the deeds that have been done and accumulated will not mature in the external realm of earth, nor will they mature in the realms of water, fire, and wind. The virtuous and non-virtuous deeds that have been done and accumulated will only mature in the aggregates, realms, and sources that are possessed. The deeds of sentient beings will not disappear even after hundreds of thousands of kalpas. Once they are accumulated and the time is ripe, they will naturally mature into fruition. Monks, in the past, in the ancient city of Varanasi, there was a king named Brahmadatta who ruled. At that time, in a hermitage in Varanasi, there lived a hermit with five superknowledges, who had five hundred attendants. Later, a Brahmin came from the south with five hundred attendants and settled near the hermit's residence. About five hundred Brahmin children were learning the secret mantras of the Brahmins. The Brahmin children of the hermit who had been living there earlier learned about the Brahmin's deeds and went to him and said: 'Khenpo, please help us too.' The Brahmin asked: 'What help do you need from me?' The Brahmin children said: 'Please teach us to recite and help us.' The Brahmin said: 'I do not teach the students of others.' Then, the Brahmin children thought: 'Our Khenpo provides us with clothes and food, but he cannot teach us to recite. We might as well abandon him and rely only on this Brahmin.'

Thinking, 'Let us gather to learn recitation.' They said to that Brahmin, 'We have abandoned our Khenpo and rely solely on you.' The Brahmin said, 'If that is so, I will satisfy you with clothes, food, and teaching recitation.' Then, as soon as those Brahmin children heard this, they abandoned that solitary, friendless hermit and relied on that Brahmin. He also gathered them with clothes, food, and teaching recitation. Monks, what do you think? The one who became a Brahmin at that time, who was abiding in the conduct of a Bodhisattva, was none other than myself. There, due to the ripening of the karma of creating division in the retinue of that hermit, I was boiled in the hells of sentient beings for many years, many hundreds of years, and many hundreds of thousands of years. Then, even after I died and transmigrated, wherever I was born, I experienced separation from my retinue. Even until now, due to the ripening of that karma, Devadatta causes me to be separated from my retinue. The Hundred Karmas. The Seventeenth Chapter. The one called 'Forest Hollow' is as follows: The basis of the discourse is that he was residing in Kausambi. At that time, there was a monastery in a forest hollow. In that forest, there was also a lake filled with artificial water. In that lake, about five hundred hermits lived and practiced asceticism. All of them were like those who were in their last existence, with their fruits ripe, ready to be pierced by an arrow. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, the guide of the solitary path, who had mastery over the two kinds of knowable things and wisdom, who was skilled in the three unmixed mindfulnesses, fearless with the four fearlessnesses, liberated from wandering in the five realms, skilled in the six sense bases, whose field of activity was the seven branches of enlightenment, who meditated on the eight liberations, who entered into the nine successively abiding meditative stabilizations, possessed of the power of the ten powers, proclaiming the great roar of the true lion, by nature, three times during the day and three times during the night, that is, six times during the day and night, he would look at the world with the eye of a Buddha, who declines, who prospers, who dwells in poverty, who becomes miserable, who is possessed of harm, who is impoverished, miserable, and harmed.
